So I was at a Harry Potter book themed trivia event last night and a few of the questions I can't find solid answers to.

The question was; in the movies, the man who gave Hagrid the dragons egg was Irish. What was his ethnicity in the books?

I looked in the book and it's never mentioned, but the answer they gave was Greek. The majority of the groups said Albanian.

Also, I could have sworn Errol was a barn owl. Their answer was a great grey.

The first question is bugging me big time.

I thought that the person who gave Hagrid the dragon egg was Quirrel in disguise?

HP wiki agrees with me, although I can't yet find a reference from a more reliable source.

Edit: I think the books only mentioned "A stranger at a pub", from which Hagrid won the egg in a card game.

Edit2: The lexicon timeline of Hagrid mentions "late April : Hatches a baby Norwegian Ridgeback dragon and names him Norbert; the egg was obtained in a card game where Hagrid inadvertently tells the stranger how to make Fluffy go to sleep."

Iirc, Hagrid said he got fluffy from a "Greek chappie", so that's right. Errol is a Great Grey in the movies, I don't think his species is mentioned in the books.

Edit: Oops, we're talking about Norbert. Mfw I can't read.

I think Red's right about Errol. HP lexicon lists the following as types of owls named in the books:

And Errol's entry has no species attributed.

I looked this up, and you're right about Fluffy being given by a Greek dude, but we're not talking about Fluffy here, but rather Norbert.

Perhaps the quiz makers got the two confused?

That's my thought on the dragons egg too. I think the trivia guy mixed those two up. Our group said Albanian, just because we know it was Quirrel who was in disguise.

I checked the wiki for him and all it says for nationality is somewhere in the British isles.

'Greek chappie' is mentioned regarding Fluffy in the book? Huh.

Funny that the Greek translation didn't include that. It's been many years since I last went through it, but I think I'd remember it.

Bah, fools. Call that a HP trivia event?

    I call that a shambles.

Right? There was another question he messed up on too. How does one get petrified by a basilisk? Obviously it's indirect eye contact.

His answer was direct eye contact. The bar full of HP fanatics erupted and it was beautiful.

Supposedly the same group is doing HP trivia once a month, so hopefully the quality picks up.

We need a HP trivia event on DLP.

The bonus question was pretty ridiculous. Who was the caretaker before Argus Filtch?

It was mentioned exactly one time in the book, I could remember that part but I couldn't recall his name.

Were they thinking of Ogg? He was gamekeeper before Hagrid, remembered fondly by one of the Weasley parents, I believe.

Pringle was caretaker before Filch. I believe Molly mentions in GoF that she and Arthur had to evade him for their "late night walks". Or something like that. I could be wrong.

You're absolutely right. I always thought the conversations was between Fitch and the trio, something along the lines of back when "old caretaker" was here we could use torture.
