Netflix problem

I share a Netflix account with my brother and our parents. Couple months ago I noticed a few weird profile names pop up, just assumed my brother was messing around. A few days ago the language was changed on my profile - I'm sure you see where I'm going with this.

Apparently this is not an isolated issue.

Thing is, I did the standard thing: changed the login info, including e-mail and password, then picked the "kick everyone off and make them sign back in" option on the Account page.

Couple days later, same problem. New weird profile names.

This makes me think someone in my family picked up a keylogger / some kind of malware. I have a Mac, myself, and ran Malwarebytes, which came up empty.

    1) Is that a program that, well, works?

    2) What's the best way to troubleshoot this issue beyond that? Is there any other obvious way someone could be picking up that info?

Contact netflix and ask them if there has been logins at IP addresses other than <specify the IPs your family is using>

Can also kick your family off for a few days, reset everything again and see what happens. Not fool proof but if the profiles reappear you can at least rule out it being specifically your family.

Damn it. I did this, kicked everyone else off, and apparently it's me, because a new profile popped up this morning. What the fuck could be happening? I'm generally not an idiot with clicking random download links. Malwarebytes came up clean.

Nuke the account and start over?

    Better / different anti-malware scanner?

Do people actually bother to brute-force Netflix passwords? Like, who the fuck has that kind of time? Neither password I used was that strong, because fuck, it's Netflix, who cares. Change it to a Very Strong password and see if that does anything?

Wipe your computer and then start over imo. If your computer is compromised it's the only way to be sure everything is gone.

You can easily check the IPs which have used your account, actually.

Go to Your Account --> Viewing Activity --> See Recent Account Access

It'll give you a list of recent IPs which have accessed your account. Look those IPs up and if they're from a place where your family isn't, then you know you have a problem.

Try the boot off from another computer. You can at least confirm it's your computer that had the virus before going hardcore on clearing it. Malwarebytes has always been good to me.

Newcomb, did you use your email/pw combo for any other websites?

    No, it's a unique combination.

I'm going to try Wise's suggestion and change the info / kick everyone off from another computer and see what's what. If that fixes it, then I know I have some kind of malware / adware on my computer, right? Though Malwarebytes didn't find anything.

Eh, that should be fine. So have you reset your password, booted everyone else off, logged in to netflix on your mac, THEN had someone compromise your account?

Correct. By "compromise," I mean "create 1-3 extra profiles with weird names and watch Pokemon and House of Cards, and occasionally change the default language." Most considerate thieves ever?

It's just super weird. I feel like if I had an actual virus / keylogger / malicious software, I'd have waaaaaay bigger problems than this. OTOH, literally what else could it be?

That is seriously odd. Perhaps boot everyone off, then reset the pass and login on a different random computer just to test? That really doesn't sound like what someone who hacks into your computer to steal usernames/passwords does.

If you really want to, you could email the new pass to your mac, but instead of using copy/paste, highlight the test and drag it to the password box. I'm not an expert at that kind of stuff, but it should defeat both a keylogger and clipboard detectors.

Could be a fuck-up on Netflix's part. Have you contacted them about it?

If you do think you have a key logger then it's time to go scorched earth. Format your shit and change your password for everything.

You should call up Netflix and ask if anyone tried to gain access to your account through support that you don't know about. Social Engineering is one of the best attack vectors. I would also recommend keeping a real close eye on your other accounts, and where possible turning on 2-factor authentication.
