I'll start with a little intro seen as this is my first post on the forums:

I'm Richard and get called all variations on this name so feel free. I have lurked for many years, creating an account sometime last year I think in order to post my writing (which I gave up as a bad job due to time restrictions with Work and University). I am 20 years old and like in the UK, I have read Fan fiction since I was around 15 and my current favourite series of books are written by Lee Childs.

OK, onto my actual request. I have read many HP fan fiction pieces over the last four years, and have had a bit of a break from HP recently. I'm asking if anyone can recommend any stories in which the author makes magic seem, as a lack of a better word, exciting. My favourite piece of HPFF is Joe's An Unfound door, closely followed by The lie I've lived. If anyone could suggest anything whether it be action or not, where the magic is on a really grandeur scale then I would be very appreciative.

    Edit;
A little more detail to help out, I'm not too fussed about any pairings as long as the piece is well written. #i'd prefer it to be Harry centric and complete AU's are fine.

    Cheers,
    Rick

Out of the Night by Raining Ink has some unique magic that feels very special.

I have just finished reading Out of the Night, found it quite interesting, would like to see it pick up a bit more pace but the way Dark Magic is portrayed is quite interesting!

Joe's Hero Trilogy takes magic to a grand scale in the extreme, if you haven't read that.

The Sacrifices Arc takes apart and builds up the magic from scratch (and most of the world, tbh; it wouldn't have taken an awful lot of work to turn it into original fiction), as does Prince of the Dark Kingdom.

Both have had somewhat mixed receptions here, partly due to the high levels of angst and slash, especially in Sacrifices, but they certainly fit the criteria given.

enembee's Harry Potter and the Forests of Valbone has a very... magical feel.

Forging the Sword by Myst Shadow does some pretty interesting things with magic as well.

I'm just curious. How well have these stories held up over time? Are they actually still readable? I'm definitely not presuming that they are of the same quality of his more current works, but if they are still decent I'd be more willing to go read them.

If you haven't read it you should at least try for completeness. It's the ultimate Super!Harry story. It can't get bigger and that's also its downfall. It's like one of these over long Stephen King TV film adaptions with sparks of greatness.

The last time I tried to read it I skipped the first part mostly until he leaves earth, then some stuff might get too corny or too overblown that it's a real shore. But there are still some parts with great atmosphere which are worth the pain. I enjoyed the story the most when Harry is alone on the road or trying to save one world.

I've always liked this story: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2374939/1/, despite that it is old and doesn't quite hold up to everything else, but it does have Harry as a Necromancer (who also doesn't bring back the stupid dead characters), and is with Bellatrix. I haven't read it in a year or more, but I've always liked it for some reason.

Cheers for the responses guys, I've read a few of them. Quite a long time back though so I'll refresh my memory over the next few weeks.

There is Milla Lalla with her unique take on Dark Magic. She took down her works for some reason and is reposting her stories again. The title is 'Stand before your God' and Harry in it isn't super or angst ridden. He is a teenager who does pretty stupid stuff.

The writing could use improvement I guess. That and her chapters are too small. Check it out anyway.

I really liked that story. I'm not sure why it was taken down, but it was a decent read. Unfortunately the sequel isn't finished though.

I PM'ed, asking the author the same question. Apparently, RL became hectic for her and she had no time to write. I still didn't get an answer as to why she took them down.

I especially liked the 'Sewlyn' flashbacks and Harry telling Dumbledore to 'fuck off' when he forces Harry to learn mind arts with Snape.

Still, she promised to continue with the sequel this time around. Her Delores Umbridge is even likeable in the story.
