Hey guys. So I've come with a summary for a fic and I want to know, as fanfiction readers, would y'all be intrigued by a story with this summary.

"Follow Harry Potter in a magical alternate universe, detailing his pursuit for esoteric magic, his quest to become the best, and featuring a trans-continental struggle that will shape the wizarding world. Starring Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore, and Nicholas Flamel consolidating power, manipulating wizards everywhere, and showing the world that magic is might."

 

I'm pretty shit as summaries, but I think that for fanfic (especially FFN/AO3) you might be better off just listing the tropes you're going to hit on.

 

No. When you're writing a story summary you're not only pitching the story idea, but you're own writing style/skill. Your's reeks of amateurism to the highest degree.

 

Or better yet, list all the popular tropes (as identified by @Taure 's survey on the HPFF reddit and make people think that they are coming so that they read.

Ninja'd: @Seyllian I'm very much aware that the summary isn't the best. However, the intent of this summary is to draw in the average fanfiction reader without making myself feel like a complete retard. From what I know about the community, this is something that I think people would click on. What do you think about it with that aim in mind?

 

I'm not a fan. Makes me think you're not writing a story, but just a masturbatory tale where you self-insert as the three gentlemen mentioned. Perhaps if you think of your fic as a closed story and do a short introduction of your setting plus alluding to the conflict?

 

I would reword the beginning and also just put AU at the end, quoting pokemon seems a bit tacky and the continental struggle also seems like it needs to be fixed, it sounds clunky. Putting manipulation in the summary would also seem like a bit of a red flag as well. I would keep some of these bits and try and rewrite it, try and make it more concise. I'm not much of writer though.

 

I'd rewrite it entirely. Maybe something along the lines of:

Magic is Might, the lesson will be learned. Dumbledore and Flamel are the teachers, Harry the willing student, and the world their stage. An alternate take on the Potterverse.

AO3 has tags for that. You can have both tropes an description.

 

Oddly enough, that's why I wrote it, so I don't mind at all.
