The fact that about a third of all Harry/Luna stories (or so it seems) are oneshots at the end of OotP, when they talk about Sirius' death and Harry just kissed Luna and suddenly it's ROMANCE! YAY!1!!!

I don't know - I don't think Luna shares - you're right about that... but threesomes aren't terrible - writing the relationship dynamic can be difficult but rewarding. Beyond that, however, and we've got a problem.

Harems are terribad. Unless it's crack, but usually it turns out to be terribad all the same.

 

The thing is though, you can use this kind of reasoning to claim virtually anything exists simply because canon doesn't mention anything about it. Seems lazy to me.

 

Actually, I'd imagine Luna to be the one *most* likely to share, being as quirky and arguably insane as she is. Of course, I could also imagine her being approached about a threesome by her boyfriend Harry, and deciding to go absolutely batshit jealous a la Glen Close in Fatal Attraction.

The only well-done threesome fics I've ever seen are Antosha's Harry/Ginny/Luna fics here. YMMV, and some at DLP don't like his fics at all, but I for one think they're incredibly well written.

 

Relationships between two people end in disaster all too often because it's actually pretty rare for two people to mesh well enough to permanently combine their lives. Three people means three dynamics that have to work instead of one. Four means six. And so on.

That said, it can work, and we don't read fanfiction to read about what usually happens. It's possible to write a poly relationship well in a fanfic, but consider this: most people that write fanfiction one-on-one relationships do so horribly even though most people have at least some experience with them. Consider how few people have experience with poly relationships, and even fewer with successful ones, and you've got a scenario where I wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't ever been done well (though I will try your rec, Portus).

That said, I do think that, of all the people in the HP series, Luna would be the most likely to be willing to give a threeway relationship a try without having to change her fundamental character. You can get some mileage out of Fleur's "but 'Arry, I am, 'ow you zay, a Veela, zerefore I 'ave no problem with you, 'ow you zay, banging loadz of hot chickz, pour encourager les autres, no?" bullshit, but you shouldn't.

 

I'd say The Apprentice Potter series wasn't shabby. Although it never really was a threesome fic more of just a Harry figuring out which girl he was going to end up with.

 

The problem with having Luna in a threeway relationship is that all too often she (or Fleur or Tonks I suppose) is added as 'flakes of Luna' (as I've heard it called), where she is merely added to the top of a relationship for the sake of a threeway.

I read one a while back, where Harry is raped by Bellatrix, and they form some form of wacky bond. But he thinks its all a dream. He then goes to Auror camp, and ends up falling in love with Marietta. Then they rescue Bellatrix. The whole way through, it has been leading up to some strange threeway relationship, and that's fine.

It was something along the lines of Issue of the Family or something.
Also, Jeconais ruined the ending of WKGQ with his flakes of Ginny. THAT came out of nowhere, and I don't actually want to read it again because of that.

 

That was back when Jeconais refused to write anything without Ginny. That story was legit one of the best at the time until the final chapter then it was like WTF is this shit?
