The points system looks good, but how will you select the candidates? if there is too high a number of possibilities, the maths wouldnt work that well.

You could have a nominations limit, which would help narrow down potentials.
For example a fic would need 5 nominations to be considered.

I wouldn't be opposed to a distinction between finished fics and WIP fics (a.k.a. abandoned free-time hobbies that may never be finished). For me even voting on the awards last time, I was more likely to vote for an average finished fic simply because it was finished over a fantastic WIP. I tend to award the car that actually runs rather than the prettiest one still in the shop.

I agree with you, but we shouldn't make it too complicated. Of course we could divide all the awards between finished and WIP, but that would at least double the work. If we find enough people, who don't mind the effort it's OK, but if not it's not really possible. And of course, we have to remember the voters. I believe more would vote, if they just could give one point to a story, they like best, rather than select 6 stories in an order for one award.

I was thinking more along the lines of restricting nominations to finished fics. And perhaps having a best WIP category. For one-shots its not an issue. And for categories about things like characters less than fics, I could see it not mattering. But then you're voting not for say, "Reign of Power" but instead the depiction of "Harry Potter" in "Reign of Power."

I guess I just don't like awarding people who then turn around and give a fic a horrible ending or more often, don't finish it.

It'd be near impossible to award only to people who've finished their fics. The nominations will be for one or to fics, many in multiple categories.
