We'll be having the awards this year. They'll be run by Raven, Syaoran and I; voting will probably begin in the month of August.

I made some adjustments to the categories and per Raven's suggestion, I'll open discussion as to whether other adjustments or additions should be made.

The thirteen awards from last year have been modified into a slightly different set.

    I have:

    Best Story -- General
    Best Story -- Crossover
    Best Story -- One Shot
    Best Story -- Alternate Universe
    Best Story -- Macabre
    Best Story

Best Author -- Grammar and Structure
    Best Author -- Dedication
    Best Author

    Best Character -- Villain
    Best Character -- Hero
    Best Character -- Anti-Hero
    Best Character -- Original Character

The category "Macabre" is for Dark Arts and dark atmosphere fics (Azkaban, for instance). Noir and Comedy and several others have been removed. I believe one shot comedies should go into one-shot and full length comedic stories should probably go in AU, Crossover or General - or wherever they fit. General will encompass Independent and General fics.

A story may only win one category award. After the five category awards have been chosen, the five will become finalists for the Best Story award.

An additional award I've thought of suggesting/adding is Best DLP Short, with nominations being limited to DLP members who have participated in the TGYH thread - I think someone suggested this. I forget who.

    But yeah - that's what I have.

    Thoughts, suggestions?

Putting in Comedy and Romance categories has been discussed on IRC, but the general consensus was they may as well be renamed the Black Comedy and Contemplating Clouds categories, respectively. Thus they were pruned.

They were pruned yesterday and then Raven said we needed balance. I said balance-shmalance. He runs the show - if he lays the law down that they're in, they're in.

But I think I convinced him to at least see if there's a consensus to just have more competitive categories.

For clarity, you should specify the posting date criteria for eligibility. Am I right in my understanding that it's stories posted or updated in the interval from Jan 1 2007 to Dec 31 2007?

I like those categories. Romance and Comedy are just to clear cut. It'd basically be just a formality if we had them.

If we're paring down the categories this much, Crossover seems kinda specific in comparison to how broad the others are. And I'm not sure how much competition Shezza's Denarian series will have.

    Eligibility:

    - A story up for nomination must have been started after December 31st, 2006 and before August 1st, 2008.
    - A story that has previously won a DLP award from a different session cannot compete in this session's award voting process.
    - Stories nominated for 'One Shot' can be no longer than 50,000 words in length.

If we want another broad category, maybe one for best series or serials. Eligibility is that at least one fic must be completed and a sequel or sequels in progress or finished. Things like Jono's stranger series, Shezza's Denarian series, jbern's Bungle/Turn Me Loose would all qualify. Even Miranda's Second Chance at Life series. Could even have series of one-shots qualifying.

Yet the Crossover genre is unique. It takes a special kind of skill to merge two different worlds together in a believable and enjoyable way. So while specific, I believe it needs it's own spot.

And while Shezza's story is great, I have enjoyed other crossovers over the past year. Nuhuh's for starters, and Jon's. Water Mage has one too. Funnily enough, they are all Dresden crossovers.

I'm sure I've read others, or others have read others that they feel worthy.

Crossover will be just as much of a formality as comedy or romance: we all know that Shezza's work is going to win. It's just too widely known. If we are trying to cut back on useless categories, I'd either get rid of that one as well or add the other two back in.

EDIT: Well nevermind that, then. Syao shot that down quick enough. >_> Hehe, shot it down before I even asked it. Skillz.

Let me just say, there's a difference between this category will be won by someone "widely known" and "not even competitive" enough to probably get more than 2 or 3 stories and so someone will default win.

There are a lot of crossovers each year.

    Take a look at this:

    Independent (170)
    2005.5-2007: 148
    2007-2008.5: 22 ( 85% )

    Romance (36)
    2005.5-2007: 23
    2007-2008.5: 13 ( 44% )

    Alternates (135)
    2005.5-2007: 93
    2007-2008.5: 42 ( 55% )

    Humor (113)
    2005.5-2007: 89
    2007-2008.5: 24 ( 73% )

    Time Travel (60)
    2005.5-2007: 39
    2007-2008.5: 21 ( 46% )

    Azkaban (30)
    2005.5-2007: 28
    2007-2008.5: 2 ( 93% )

    General (172)
    2005.5-2007: 142
    2007-2008.5: 30 ( 79% )

Percentages in brackets denote the drop since last session. 13 romance stories and 24 humor stories. Humor has a larger shot of being included, from the discussions we had - but it's still one of the lowest w/o being combined with something.

Which was another potential idea - combining Romance & Humor and allowing nominations to be either for the award.

Bio can you list the past winners of the awards so as to stop anyone from voting on a previous winning fic?

Just look here and here. It's pretty easy to see who won, and Bio really probably has something more pressing to do than reposting it.

    Edit. Or not.

EDIT: LOL MINDLESS! Sorry bro; I have nothing to do at midnight on a Friday. A bit depressing. But my luck'll change next week maybe?

Should be impossible for anyone to possibly be nominated for another award if they've won - but who knows, someone might have a timeturner lying around. I now realize the stupidity of that rule but it sounded good at the time ^_^.

While I agree weaving a good crossover takes a special kind of skill (and the crossovers of Shezza and nuhuh and nonjon are listed among my favorites), I aver that writing effective comedy takes at least as much skill and should be recognized in the awards since it's a genre that we collectively enjoy. In contrast, romance is an unpopular DLP category and can be safely scrapped.

It's good that you've excised "Best Newcomer"; historically that's been a weak category.

The "Best Author" category and subcategories seem weird. Why even do a "Best Author - Grammar and Structure"? Are we now grammar Nazis to the point where we would give even a flawed/cliché story props because of a strong beta team? Also, I have no clue what "Best Author - Dedication" is supposed to recognize? Raw word count? Regular updates? Seems imbalanced next to, say, "Best Hero." And while we're at it, isn't "Best Author" liable to turn into a popularity contest, the very thing that we just devoted 1000 posts to lamenting? The Best Authors will likely be writing the Best Stories, so it seems redundant to have a separate category.

Err you sure we aren't allowed to vote for a previous winner Bio cause there are a few fics up there that are still awesome and still getting updated, choice has been severly cut down. Though i suppose it will be more fun to pick a winner ey.

Cheers for the list Bio i had forgotten how many top notch fics are out there.

How many runners up/ nominees will there be? The awards is always a good way of finding the creme-de-la-creme of this years fanfiction, so the more the merrier.

OK. I get the need you have to fellate a couple of authors or congratulate them for working a category that has the least amount of action happening in it.

I like Contemplating Clouds and though I think nonjon is a douchebag, I like most of his work. He didn't even win last year, so it's not like I'm cockblocking him from running up some imaginary score, either.

It's because of shit like this:

    <MurToN> Meh
    <thatperson> o_O
<MurToN> Not enough decent HP FF to give out awards anyway
    <MurToN> It's all shit now

That's been the consensus. We want people to participate in the nominations and not have to struggle to come up with shit just to make a couple of categories that aren't taken seriously more than a default. Comedy does happen - often in one shots. And comedy will additionally be represented in the TGYH DLP Short award for what is largely a comedy driven thread.

And having jbern win Romance for a story that was complete shit and had little romance?

But stuff like Black Comedy? It can be in AU.
