How do y'all think a MMO of Harry Potter sounds? You get to make your own character, set your personality traits, train through Hogwarts, then maybe live out in the real world. Maybe a SIMS kind of thing.

That would be nice, but it's not likely to ever happen. It would be cool though, you could sneak into the restricted section and later when you graduate you could become a dark lord and kill other dark lords on your way to power and imortality!

In IRC, like ten months ago we had a long talk about a MMORPG. I can't remember the details, but we came up with some fairly good shit.

IIRC a lot of people on IRC (when I still bothered to go on) were playing hogwartsonline or something, twas a good game, not least cause I was 3rd highest in our guild rankings, sigh!

I was thinking about some vampire game you all were talking about on another thread. You could get stronger during your Hogwarts years before aligning yourself with either the dark, light, or neutral. Powerful neutral people (supposedly those in the ministry) could make new laws to be enforced on the dark side while they try to take over. The light - being the righteous, dumbasses they are - would try to protect the people. Sometimes anarchy would reign supreme, other times they'd be beaten back and have to try again. Don't know how long it would be fun for, but I'd play the hell out of it personally.

I don't know what kind of MMORPG hogwartsonline was, but when I think MMORPG I thing something huge like WOW or FFXI. I was reading a thread on this sight a few days ago about a RPG board game like D&D (about Harry Potter) and I thought that sounded fun as hell, but a fucking MMORPG for the Potterverse would be something that I would give up more of my life for than I used to with WOW and FFXI.

I think that if someone big really got the idea in their head than it could happen. I think that a huge amount of people would play, even people who usually don't play videogames just because it is Harry Potter, and I think that Rowling and whoever made the game would make a hell of a lot of money.

I might just see if I could write someone about that, because that would be fucking awesome. :D

As long as PvP was allowed so all the fangirls(boys) could be killed off. A DLP guild in that game would kick ass.

They wouldn't know what was coming if we had a DLP guild, we'd reign supreme!

I think it could really work actually. With you going through lessons and being able to go out into the forbidden forest to try and train up.

Also you could choose which kind of spells you'd want to specialise in, kinda like professions in guild wars (im sure its like that in WOW too but I've never played it) so you could specialise in charms or transfiguration.

    Could be really good.

A Sims kind of MMO? Ugh, no thanks. The Sims is bad enough as it is without more stuff being modelled after it :/

As for a Harry Potter MMO on the whole. Mmm, my main problem with it would be story really. You'd be 'levelling' through Hogwarts to get to the outside world right, what then? Have your character get a job? Ehhh...for me that is no driving factor. Doing that and/or following in Harry's footsteps from the books to see everywhere he saw can only take you so far. There has to be a story, look at LOTRO, FFXI, even WoW to an extent. There is always something driving you on, making you want to play more. Thats your lore.

Somehow I just can't see 'meeting Ollivander' or 'detention with McGonagall' driving me on to pay £10 a month.

They need to snag the Diablo II makers, and the guys behind Star Wars ( I forget which one - 6 AM here - but it had the dark/light alignment based on actions thing), and combine the two.

Now that would be bitching, but none of this pay-per-month capitalistic bullshit.

YES. You throw a dark curse at a little girl you get dark. You throw a light curse at a little girl you get light. (I'm not being sarcastic, that's actual a good idea)

I would play it if it was in the mold of a FFXI, where you could roam the landscape and kill cactuars for 3 hours straight, but somehow I don't think a Harry Potter MMORPG would play like that. It's difficult because the story line from HP is placed on Earth, and it would be far far far too hard to stay relatively in character with what JKR wants and still have it fun enough to keep people interested. $10 bucks to get sorted and learn rudimentary spells? I think not.

Still, one day I think something will happen--but it probably won't be pretty.

KOTOR, and yes. I would pay for a HP RPG if Bioware made it.

I would give my left big toe if Bioware was to make a Harry Potter RPG.

MMORPG!HP would be pretty amusing, though I don't think I'd pay £5 a month for it (gotta love that exchange rate :D). The way I see it, it would be set during the First War with Voldemort, and you choose who you want to side with after you leave Hogwarts (Dumbledore/Ministry/Voldemort/Neutral), with Voldemort and the Ministry being the pkillers, since they're the ones who can use the Unforgivables.

You wouldn't be able to play as a major character (Voldemort/James Potter/Snape/etc.), but you could have some measure of freedom in your actions, and JKR has said that the Wizarding World during the First War was a dark place, makes for a great atmosphere for an rpg.

I like it, but it sounds far too Runescape-ish for my liking. I got out once; I don't think I'd survive a second time.

The idea of a HP MMORPG is nice. However, consider what has been done to the HP Fanfic universe by fangirls and then apply the same ruination to an MMORPG.

Need I say more on the horrors this would unleash on mankind?

As a pure PVP MMO yes, that'd work. Your problem comes with PVE. What would you have as quests? Who would issue them? Getting quests from Dumbledore like 'The Death Eaters are growing in numbers, go and kill 10 of them!' just wouldn't work, especially since judging from the Dept of Mysteries they and the Order are fairly evenly matched. And having you go around collect potion ingredients from animals for PVE quests could only go so far.

It is a difficult idea. PVP would work great, just provide the maps and let players run riot against each other. PVE though....meh.

EDIT - And also, unfortunately Aek it'd be £10 regardless of exchange rates. They keep 'around' that as the standard. Unfair yes, but they have to rip us off somehow :(
