Well, being magical itself is in the genes: JKR said so. However, she alluded to the magical gene being dominant, but that makes no sense, since if it was, wizards would have out-numbered muggles fairly quickly.

However, if we say that it is recessive, then it makes a lot of sense and explain squibs and muggleborns (who, JKR said, come from having a squib in the family tree somewhere).

 

'Dominant' is the adjective you're looking for. 'Dominate' is a verb.

That aside... very interesting.

JKR clearly doesn't know which end is up.
