I really, really didn't have time to watch this. I need to be where I need to be about an hour ago.

But guess what? You made me watch through all of those. Now I'm late.

    :awesome

Yes. Before these featurettes I was pretty excited for the show. Now though...the wait is as bad as the wait for Wise Man's Fear. And from the depth they seem to be putting into the teasers, it should be just as good.

I've been seeing the adverts on sky and they're teasing me, have a taste of what's to come but you'll have to wait. Fuck you give it to me now!

I was impressed -- looks like it's going to be well made. Is it going to show up on Hulu or anything you reckon?

    Color me impressed as well.

Also, the quality of the first minutes is driving my fanboyism into making it impossible to post in this thread without my posts degenerating from the get-go into intense Squee-fests.

    Because this shit isssssssSSSQQQQUUUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! :awesome

I hate you for devouring several hours of my time a day with that single sentence. :facepalm

In other news (well, not really new news), a series of House sigil wallpapers is now up over on the Making Of~ page. I currently have my desktop alternating between each of the 7 houses every hour, on the hour.

    Like a bawse.

Ok, now that that's out of my system, I thought it was excellent, but I wish they'd done a bit more with the White Walkers scene. For one, they weren't even white...

They also should have made the preview about a minute or two longer so it could include the direwolf scene.

The Others are pretty much exactly how I pictured them, to be honest. Agreed on the direwolves.

I was just watching the 14 minute preview for about the 5th time. This was the first time I was watching in HD, full screen, so it allowed me to see something I didn't before...

    Apologies for size.

Was it just me, or were they really not that deep into the forest? It didn't seem like they were over a week out from the Wall when the Others ambushed them. Unless I was distracted at a key moment or something...

We didn't see Waymar Royce get his eyes shredded by his sword shattering. But the Wights were sufficiently creepy and the atmosphere was very appropriate.

The Stark part was well done, but I don't like how the guy playing Jon looks. I get that he and Robb are older (as is Daenerys, right?), but he isn't what I imagined him to be. I think this is a good approximation of what I pictured him as.

    Still, I'm excited for this.

Jon's voice annoys me more than his look. God, I hope he doesn't keep that up for the full series lol.

I get that they are going to be older, but they look a little too old. If I recall they were 14 in the books when they started off, so I can see them wanting to bump their ages up to something in the 17-19 range, but Robb and Jon look more like they're in their mid-late 20s. Granted the actors might be, and that's fine, but there doesn't appear to be an attempt to make them seem like youths.

I.e. The sense that they are still kids is completely lost.

Granted I know that in these books by the time they were 18 they'd almost certainly have been acting like men and taking on the duties of a man, but I think it loses something when it doesn't try to convey that they are still a bit young for what they are going to be thrown into. For me that was part of the book that shouldn't be completely lost by aging the characters a couple of years for casting purposes.

They looked pretty much right to me, though I kinda pictured them as having white cloaks or robe sorts of things. I was mostly talking about what Sion_Revan said. They missed out on a lot of opportunity for a good fight scene.

Like a lot of people said already, I was kinda iffy about the casting of Kit Harington, the actor who plays Jon. I still can't reconcile his voice with the voice of Jon Snow as I'd imagined it, but he's gradually growing on me. The bits in the trailers and previews where Tyrion was cracking wise at him about his mind being a sword were pretty spot on, tbh.

I expect that he'll grow into the role as the years go by.

Robb looked nothing like what I'd imagined either, but the actor they cast is just so perfectly Robb Stark that I can't complain. >_>

Too much action would ruin this show, IMO. When I say too much, I mean taking every opportunity to show every single physical conflict to its greatest capacity. Like the scene with the Others we have right now- it's good as it is.

I would consider that they've only got 450 minutes (10 episodes, which are probably 45 minutes each) to tell the entire story of the first book. A fight scene here would take a minute or two away from the episode, which is especially crucial when considering that this is the first one, where they have to set all the initial blocks down- in more than a single storyline, I might add.

The point that needs to get across about the wights is that they're creepy, mysterious, cold, frozen motherfuckers who kill you, then send your dead against you, and don't give a fuck about us- and that's what gets across from what we've seen. They don't need a prolonged fight scene to do that, especially when every minute of screen time counts. It's not a horror-centered show, so there's also no point in drawing all of the supernatural bloodshed out longer than it has to.

In the pilot episode, they'd have to establish Ned's position, and each member of his family has their own part to play- Brandon has to witness the Lannister twins' affairs and fall, Jon's relationship with Catelyn and his half-siblings has to be shown, Sansa and Arya's rivalry, Catelyn and Ned's relationship, their relationship to the Night's Watch, Robert, the Lannisters- and that's without even knowing where they're planning to end the episode. On top of that there's Robert and the Lannisters to consider, then the Targaryens, and the direwolves will probably get a minute or two devoted to them as well. With all the potentially juicy dialogue and conflict that's inherent in the other aspects of the first bits of the novel, it seems wasteful to focus on what happens beyond the Wall, beyond (twice in the same sentence! :awesome) the bare bones. There will be more time to expand on that in later episodes, after Jon is inducted into the Night's Watch.

To fit all of the necessary bits into 45 minutes- and to fit it well- means cutting out things that don't really need to be shown in great detail. Drawing out a fight scene in those first crucial minutes when there's much more to be shown seems a bit unnecessary to me.

tl;dr, this is all that matters, IMO.

I can't believe that after years of waiting, I'm actually going to get to see this. I'm fucking stoked.
