I've learned a while ago to never read ASoIaF or Harry Potter stories on AH. They just can't write them, at all.

Agreed. This is mostly due to their lack of comprehensive knowledge of the backstories and mechanics of the universes, such as not really understanding how magic works in Harry Potter, or the nature of feudal society in ASoIaF.

The general lack of basic writing skill is also a problem.

ASOIAF goes hand in hand with ASB in alternatehistory.com, the result is the whackiest of stories get posted there.
Prose is never focus of any AH thread but world development, discussing motivations, possible war scenarios etc. Things like plot and narrative that would be needed for readable work do not exist.
The discussions (when not hijacked by silly premises) can be interesting though.

I remember that no one opposed the dumb Iceflame surname.
    That stands out glaringly.
@R.E. Lee alternatehistory.com has threads that cannot be read like one would a novel because they are entirely focused on world mechanics and related topics, but the asoiaf area is full of nonsense.
Perhaps some one could write a feudal society in asoiaf well, but it would be strange as GRRM himself did not write Westeros realistically. It is a novel so everything GRRM did was to get a (seemingly) better plot in a medieval setting.

His 'technically correct' habit of putting apostrophes in place of quotation marks and just using apostrophes annoys the ever loving fuck out of me much like it did for A Cadmean Victory and makes it near impossible to read. Which is just as well, because from what I've heard ACV went to shit pretty quickly.

I'm having the same issue, I can't stand the apostrophes.
How hard is it to use quotation marks.

I've never had a problem with the apostrophes vs quotation marks. Tim Winton has a habit of doing the same thing, but I understand how deviations from literary conventions can evoke loathing. I hate it when people use nauseous instead of nauseated. Personally I find Canvas of Crowns to be far less offensive as far as the source material is concerned when compared to ACV.

It's very dry. It takes five chapters and Jon stumbling into conversations to try and butterfly the story.

The conversation with Tyrion and Mormont irked me for some reason.

Meh not the worst thing I've read though.

A Canvas of Crowns is boring.

I don't see anything that would pull me in and make me want to read more of it.

I'm wondering is there any stories that focus purely on combat/knights. Stuff that goes into detail about them suiting up with their vambraces and such and having armour not be made of paper. Probably a bit much to expect from the fandom but most of the character driven stuff of GoT doesn't do it me.

Hello i'm new here but i've been reading a story on Archive of our Own and while it's not updated in a while, i do think it's one of the best ones i've come across yet.

It's an alternate take on the war of five kings, and the author has openly admitted that he felt the initial Stark downfall reeked more of plot driving the story than consistent characterization. I have enjoyed it greatly though, i just wish they'd be more consistent with the updates.

It's par for the course, really. Overuse of adjectives in the first few paragraphs nearly made me stop reading immediately, and it has yet to really improve. I've not gotten past the first three chapters yet, however, so it may get better. It's a time waster if I've ever seen one.

    Also,

The smut scene between Jon and Amarei Frey was probably one of the most over the top, ridiculous things I've ever read that wasn't meant to be crack.

Lets not forget that Jon Snow is legitimized and given the name 'Lord Hoarfrost'. My sides hurt.

Truth be told, i myself kinda winced through the first few chapters, but by chapter 4, it hooked me. The chapter quality only went up alongside the word number.

Was it really necessary for those Jon/Amerei sex scenes to be included?

Seriously, what does Jon having anal sex with Amerei Frey contribute to this fic?

Totally agree with this sentiment, but I found it so hilariously out of place and clumsily done I couldn't be mad. I don't generally have any objections to sex scenes but these were pretty weird.

Other than that I actually quite like the fic itself, it's a fix it fic for sure but well done if predictable at times.

    I'll agree it was hilarious.

In one moment, he was talking with Robb, in another he's reminiscing about lubing up his wife's ass.

Confession time: I'm actually the writer of the fic. I enjoy the generally positive comments given on AO3, but this seems to be a vastly tougher crowd n i wanted to get input from all sorts.

So constructively criticize away, if you're willing.

But i wasn't kidding when i said when i go back to read the first chapter at least, i kinda cringe at it now.

Why pretend that it was not your own fic at first?

I think it was pretty obvious that, the author thing I mean, at least it was to me when I read your rec and the comments next. Look, for a better feedback go to WbA. Don't do this shit again, its pretty sad and erodes people goodwill.

I haven't read ASOIAF since A Dance with Dragons came out. I haven't watched GOT either since I was planning on watching it once the series had ended.

Anyway, I know most people don't really like him, but are there any good Robb Centric stories? Non-Slash of course. It's just that I find him the most relateable since I'm the oldest son as well in my family and have four younger siblings myself.

I've read Robb Stark, First of His Name and Robb Stark, A Wolf King which I thought were fairly decent but that might just be me. I've read Robb Returns as well which is...less decent but still readable.
