I don't think he actually invented it. He was using the premise that the Lannisters (and the Westerlands in general) have such extensive expertise in mining gathered over the years, and particularly given the depth that Casterly Rock's mines have been described as going to, that they would have encountered mine gases quite frequently over their long history and needed to find a way to counter or minimize their effects for a limited time period otherwise there would been countless viable mining shafts throughout the Rock abandoned and likely dangerous if the gas can spread further. The doylist answer in story is fantasy setting trump real life concerns, but eh whatever.

So in story what the SI did was to tell Tyrion to apply and/or adapt the principles and equipment that the Lannisters take for mining gas to exploring the smoking sea. Whether or not that is still cringeworthy for you, is for you to decide.

What a load of bollocks. "Mine gases" lol. The Lannisters are mining gold, not coal where you have to worry about methane (which is why we have the proverbial canary in the coal mine). They'll only abandon a tunnel if they've chased all its gold or it's become dangerously unstable.

Pumping fresh air into a mine (and the water out once you're below the water table) is feasible with equipment on the surface, powered by teams of horses. This was one of the first jobs taken over by modern motors and is the reason that we began rating them in terms of horse power.

Modern mines have to worry about carbon monoxide poisoning because they run diesel machinery underground. There are no such concerns for the Lannisters.

Coal is just fucked though. Methane. Ugh. Even if you had some type of breathing apparatus (too impatient to let it float out lighter than air?), one spark from a chisel on rock could send the whole place to Kingdom Come.

TL;DR: Lannisters needing personal breathing apparatuses for their mines is nonsense. Not even mines that do expect to deal with poison gas (coal) would have a practical use for it.

Well yeah, I do like it so far, except for the main character being an overpowered OC that can do no wrong. I was just trying to get some opinions before I dumped too much time into it with it being around 200k words and a fresh update when I posted.

I kinda like it. I've read so many Stark fix it fics that it's nice to see a Targaryen fix it fic. Yes, the main character OC is overpowered in his competence, but I can accept that because I like how much the author has changed. There is no rehashing of any canon storylines with different characters filling in. The latest chapter alone makes me want more.

Am a few chapters in and it has the usual problems that come with creating OCs like this. On one hand, we are supposed to believe their immense competence, mind for innovation and good character, with which they pull off their feats and draw in the canon characters the author himself likes. On the other hand, we are also supposed to believe that their presence until the story started changed virtually nothing about the political landscape of Westeros, even though Aerys has a second son who can command armies. That his presence didn't have a huge impact on Aerys, Rhaegar, the kingsguard and in the plans of various lords and schemers.

That the guy with the good character, strong will and competence somehow could influence anything, didn't try anything.

As such, it puts an OC in canon situations, gives them the competence to deal with those situations but changes nothing in the plans and approach of the canon opposing characters.

So yeah, maybe that changes, but so far, not impressed.

    Nemrut put it well.

It's silly to expect a divergence only after Rhaegar eloped with Lyanna and not well before it.

The OC is dull to read about as well.

And as usual, this has the typical "B-but he loved me!" drivel from Lyanna as reasoning for her elopement, along with Ned Stark being all too forgiving for what happened as consequences of her actions.

Worse still, when the Starks go to visit King's Landing, 16 years later, Lyanna is still acting willful and spiteful towards the OC for taking her child away from her, as if he should have allowed her to take him with her to the North. There is not a single shred of remorse for what she caused to happen.

And of course, the crown of the shitpile is that Lyanna's and Rhaegar's son is somehow not considered a bastard.

    Oh and he's named Jahaerys.

I haven't seen this one mentioned yet.

The Last Lion of House Reyne

    By: joen1801

When Tywin Lannister crushed the Reyne-Tarbeck Rebellion everyone in the Kingdoms believed he ended two noble lines. But thanks to one unique infant, one Harrion Reyne called Harry by his parents, some survived.

I think it's an enjoyable read and the start in the tunnels of Castamere was reasonably gripping. What I really like is that Harrion doesn't feel OP and the connection to Harry Potter was handled pretty well.

I've been reading that. It was interesting and rather grounded for joen. But in the last couple of chapters it feels like he is loosing his grip on the story and it's going to turn into the same sort of nonsense that "The Difference one man can make" is.

On the other hand the last chapter is promising that Harry is heading for Valyria. That might be fun to read.

An idea that popped into my head from the fic: All the HP/ASIOF fics that I can think of are ASIOF stories with HP characters inserted into them. Are there any fics that feel more like HP with Westeros just being used as the setting?

You mean like, there is wizarding culture in Westeros? A Hogwarts in somewhere in the Riverlands or something?

    Maybe?

I don't really know what I meant by it. It's more about what I don't want.

Like in this fic and CX's one Harry is reborn and placed in position where he has to interact with the main characters in a rather major way. Same goes for most dimension travel fics where he becomes a political force. That's always done in a hamfisted way of him just constantly running into major characters.

What I want is a fic where Harry goes off and does his own thing, but has to constantly contend with the events of ASIOF interfering with his plans. Sort of like "A song of Ice and Fires that weren't all my fault" before Dresden went and blew up Hightower.

Or a more grounded "The Wizard of Harrenhal" where instead of taking over the entire world without even really trying Harry is searching for a way home during one of the wars, but due to his kindhearted nature keeps getting drawn into the conflict in some manner.

But perhaps none of those. It's more about the feeling that instead of Harry being plopped into Westeros to solve it's problems, the setting is used to create problems for Harry.

How so? I didn't think it was all that bad. And why do you all hate the author?

He's a try hard fuckboi. Just look at his name: Cxjenious. It's "sex genius" but is supposed to be cool because he obfuscated it a little? He's a thirteen year old boy who has just discovered his penis.

Ok, I honestly don't really care about the author beyond the story. What's wrong with the story?

Sarcasm, and trolling bro. Cxjenious is a member here and his fic is one if not the best HP/GoT crossover in the fandom at the moment.
