My problem with a lot of Ice and Fire stories is that a lot of them are either fix-it fics - which don't work thematically with the universe - or slice of ordinary life fics - which can be written well, but once again, aren't the point of a Song of Ice and Fire.

That being to exist as a place where human and extremely flawed characters all interact and try to ruin eachother in pursuit of their own goals (said goals which lead to ruin for themselves) - while the entire time, we readers enjoy their anguish and the metaknowledge that almost none of their dreams matter in the face of the magical ice zombies which are inevitably going to come over the Wall and murder all of their tragically misunderstood asses.

At this point, even if all of their hilarious bad luck is part of some massive karmic engine created to engineer one enormously fortuitous series of miracles - which at this point is the only thing that can save them from the Walkers and the Great Other - the majority of the series as written paints a very specific thematic picture. You know what doesn't fit in that picture?

Sansa 'redeeming' Sandor Clegane by inviting him to her tea parties.

You really want a fix-it fic? Tyrion Lannister is sent back in time with all of his knowledge into his perfectly healthy, non-dwarf body as a baby.

    Roll fucking credits.

I disagree with you on this. One of things that make fanfiction fascinating it that it allows authors to explore things that wouldn't fit the original themes of the books.

"A Secret of Spells" updated: click!

Nothing earth shattering, but much more Harry!centric than the rest of the fic.

Read a few of L_Cloudy's fics. They're alright, nothing amazing.

The first is new, a little early to tell how good it is, and the second is complete, and has a good ending.

Far Away - Jon goes the opposite way, to Pentos instead of the Wall.

Heroes and Ghosts - Lyanna didn't go with Rhaegar willingly. But now, with all the Targaryens dead, she is perfectly willing to be Queen.

With the way that fic keeps going I won't be surprised if Harry's animagus form is a winged horse or dragon so that Hermione can ride him into battle.

It's definitely a winged horse. Even his animagus form is a way to support Hermione, rofl.

I really liked the second rec. Oberyn/Lyanna is a pairing that should not work, in theory, but it scintillates in that story. I did not expect the ending, which was truly epic. Great rec, Ash.

I agree with Zeit, Heroes and Ghosts is awesome. L_Cloudy also has this one fic, which I thought was their best:

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn - He died for the first time on the riverbank of the Trident, Robert Baratheon’s hammer smashing into his chest. Wherein Rhaegar lives again.

    It's simply chilling.

A Legion for Westeros reviews While hunting boar in the Kingswood, Robert Baratheon discovers a lost band of Sell Swords who speak a barely recognizable dialect of Free Cities Valyrian. Befriending them, the King, along with Ser Barristan, returns to their camp; only to discover it is a Castra guarded by an entire Roman Legion. When Robert returns to King's Landing with them, will Westeros ever be the same?A song of Ice and Fire - Rated: M - English - Fantasy/Adventure - Chapters: 10 - Words: 47,808 - Reviews: 59 - Favs: 64 - Follows: 90 - Updated: Feb 24 - Published: Dec 10, 2013 - Robert B., Barristan S.

A crossover with the not excessively well known Turtledove Videssos Cycle series (I think I read the first two books in it long ago.) It features a very early divergence, With a lot of Barristan Selmy and Ned Stark so far. Robert gets a surprisingly fair portrayal of both his best and worst qualities.

Even ignoring the crossover element, this sort of divergence isn't done frequently and I find it pretty interesting.

I've been following it for a few months now. It's a pretty good fic and I get the impression that the author has a decent knowledge of how the Roman military works. Though the author splices Latin phrases into the text which can get a bit annoying, but I can ignore it.

After every chapter update I always have the urge to watch Gladiator or listen to the theme song.

My rec: Fool's Gold is a story where Cersei marries Ned instead of Robert. It's short, but I enjoyed it for the quick read it is.

The Weirwood on the Volcano by Basileus
"Westeros does not truly recover from the violent end of the Targaryen dynasty and the disintegration of the Seven Kingdoms starts long before the War of the Five Kings. The Gods had tossed a coin once, and the realm pays for it. Yet the Gods may choose to toss another coin once more, which might shatter the realm again, or give it its one chance of salvation. AU."

Only about 13,000 words so far, but I found this relatively enjoyable. It's very pro-Targaryen and I'm not sure I like the characterization of Jon, but it has a very unique plot. Definitely a good read to pass the time.

I'm enjoying this, more than I though I would. Only on chapter three but I've enjoyed the Rome/ Byzantium inspired bits and it's a generally enjoyable, if not amazing AU. However there are a ton of typos and missed words that make reading some of the paragraphs a chore.

The Weirwood on the Volcano have ben finished. I enjoyed it while it lasted. And I would have liked to see some of the things talked about in the epilogue written about in more detail. Otherwise it was a good story, a bit short though.
