    Disengagement updated today.

Woop woop, hate-train for Catelyn Tully (because, honestly I find it more pleasant to think about her miseries as a Tully, rather than a Stark), all aboard.

Neat chapter, all in all, but fucking hell, I wish it updated just a bit more frequent.

I hate Catelyn but feel bad doing so because she just wants to protect HER blood.
But I like Jon and Rhaenys so to me Catelyn is a biatch.

Catelyn was always a bitch. I giveth no shite about the whole 'muh maternal instincts'. She was an idiot for ever thinking that Jon would have tried taking away Winterfell from Eddard's trueborn children, like any of his bannermen (except maybe Bolton, but probably not even him) would have allowed it or that Jon would have actually done it, when Robb and Arya had been like a true family to him.

Hell, you could argue more that if she sought to separate them right from the start, not allowing them to be with each other, Jon might have fostered such thoughts, so in the end her unjustified hate for the child might have driven him to do exactly what she feared. Gotta love those self-fulfilling prophecies (I'm well aware there isn't one concerning this, I just found the comparison fitting).

    Anyhoo, a funny.

You have to think though, this is how she was raised to think. That bastards are a threat to trueborns. She's very rigid in who she loves, very black and white

And it's very clearly stated numerous times in the books that when it comes to family Catelyn doesn't think straight and does anything at all to protect them.

It doesn't help that Ned gets sulky and avoidant whenever Jon or his mother is brought up to him by her. So she stops asking.

Well, I doubt that either of them are going to change their opinions so... No Rickon Stark?

Who's going to have the extra direwolf then?

Also yeah, Catelyn takes her house's words way too seriously.

Ah, well the writing is a little.. Dunno how to describe it.

    Information!!!
    "I feel this way."
    "I feel that way."
    Impasse!!!

Ned's brief musings may have been the exception, but they too were just a recounting of thought.
No discussions or good dialogue a weak chapter makes.

Even if Jon isn't a threat to Robb in canon, the same can't be said of his line. As far as Cat knows, Ned loves Jon enough to recognize him as his son, meaning that there's a good chance that Ned loves him enough to set him up as a landed noble in the future. In fact, considering that Ned is a good man who loves his kids, it's more probable than not in her mind. The problem is that a landed title would make both Jon and his line a perpetual threat to her line, not least because others can make use of them even if they remain loyal. Look at what Stannis is trying to do with Jon.

Furthermore, it's important to note the impact of House Blackfyre on the Westerosi mindset. House Blackfyre has attempted to usurp House Targaryen no less than five times, with the last time being the War of the Ninepenny Kings, which is still very much within living memory.

Well, it's not all that unheard of for step parents to dislike the children of their spouses. My grandfather and all of his brothers and sisters were forced to live in a separate apartment from their father because their step mother refused to have them under her roof. Despite this her son wound up loving all of his half siblings. Catelyn at least has a legitimate fear when it comes to inheritance/money/nobility/etc.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I think that a lot of Cat's fear has to do with now much Ned loves Jon. Given the history of the bastard Targaryens she has justifiable fears that Ned could one day legitimize Jon placing him over all of her children except Robb.

And Jon could marry Rhaenys in good old Targaryen fashion and the dynasty is back.

It's been stated numerous times in Jon POVs that he views incest as one of he worst of sins, along with being a traitor, and a kinslayer.

He follows the old gods. He isn't into yucky incest!

Given that Jaime and Cersei being separated for all but a few months of the last decade or so has apparently had exactly zero impact on her incest-baby schedule, I wouldn't count on it.

Actually, that's the most annoying thing about this story for me. Cause and effect, dammit!

Ok, I stand corrected, I guess?

I still feel like that is a pretty minor impact, there should have been massive changes, perhaps even Cersei finding herself a replacement for Jaime. I just felt like the author chickened out on that one.

What are you talking about? Oberyn directly references Myrcella during his meeting with Cersei and Tywin during Joffery's wedding.

What are you talking about? Aren't they talking about Disengagement, and not HBO's Game of Thrones?
