Except its been thousands and there are so many; the Starks, Arryns, Boltons, Lannisters, Daynes, Tullys etc. Its also been the middle ages for at least two thousand years, Martin took all the cliches and then at some arbitrary point in time decided that it was now a gritty and realistic world. The setup doesn't match the story.

Shadow babies, magical tree-people, dragons, prophecies, the universe conspiring for maximum grim-derp...

It's particularly jarring with the Starks: the way they are made to apeal to modern sensibilities doesn't fit the world in wich they live.

I'd say it's a completely different story because by the time the books take place, that's all it is, a story. History and the songs erase and simplify things until all that's remembered is Robert single-handedly striking down Rhaegar in single combat and becoming King. But we know there's far more to it than that - you have the ambiguities of what really happened between Lyanna and Rhaegar (though I favour the kidnapping theory); you have Twyin ordering the murder of children and Robert not giving a fuck; you have the total injustice of Stannis holding being starved for a year and receiving no gratitiude, etc. Hell, Robert wasn't even central to the rebellion, it was a Stark and Arryn deal, Robert just had the most Targ blood.

Anyway, speaking of pre-book events, has anyone come across any good fics showcasing Robert and Ned's friendship during their time at the Vale?

Wild Wolf updated again, if anyone's still interested in it. Still cringeworthy.

I'm also still interested in stories about Eddard going north after being dismissed as Hand of the King or taking up Renly's offer, if some of you know about fics like that.

Are there any stories where Starks take their just revenge on Boltons, Freys and Lannisters - preferably in the most gory and amusing way possible?

    Can we do shamless promotion?

Cause if we can, while not exactly fan fic, I made a quest in which there is a God-Emperor of Mankindlite born in the Asoiafverse.

Written on a dare, a humorous take on what happen if FSN Mordred, Shirou and Arturia ends up in Westeros after their deaths at certain points in their lives. Featuring a Gender Bent Shirou and Arturia. Might be continued if popular enough. T for now.
    Rated: Fiction T - English - Humor - Chapters: 3 - Words: 14,533 - Reviews: 89 - Favs: 128 - Follows: 130 - Updated: Mar 31 - Published: Mar 16 - id: 11116792

Guilty pleasure is guilty. This started as an attempt at crack but has gotten somewhat more serious in the two other chapters. Set up is fairly standard, Shirou reincarnates as Sansa after being killed by Lancer, Mordred reincarnates as Joffery's older sister, who isn't amused that she is the product of incest AGAIN, and Saber reincarnates as Viserys. They all have complete recall of who they were and proceed to start pulling things off the rails.

not the best fic in the world, guilty pleasure is guilty, but after all the typical back stabery that happens in GoT fics I found this to be a breath of fresh air.

The hell? Genderbent and not even in a good way. If it were Menace level gender-bender like Written in Reverse, I'd give it a shot. Not even close.

It's why I said guilty pleasure is guilty, and what exactly is the good way to gender bend in a story anyway?

I found This at Ao3. It's pretty shitty and shippy, but the concept was interesting. Jon Snow goes to Essos and becomes part of Daenerys' entourage instead of going to the wall.

Dancing Through The Fire by Mysunandstars01

Summary: Illyrio regarded Jon carefully before giving him an enigmatic smile. “Have you ever been to a Dothraki wedding?” // au where instead of joining the Night’s Watch, Jon Snow ends up becoming a trusted companion of Daenerys Stormborn.
    ---

Are there fics similar to this one in concept? Preferably way better written.

I's like it more if Sam wasn't involved; there's no reason for him to be in Essos.

Blitzed through the story. It's okay but so far nothing happened, it's a rehash with Jon thrown in for flavor.

I have no frickin idea why Sam is even included in this story.

    At least it isn't L+R=J.

It's got some good points and some bad points. Positives, Robert Baratheon is fucking shit up and killing people. Negatives, every main character is a pussy and I have no sympathy for them.

Not sure you can really say every main character is a pussy. Jon, who is pretty much the protagonist, is a pussy in some of his personal relationships but
he's lately been organising a resistance behind enemy lines and fucking up the bodies of Dothraki to intimidate them, which is pretty badass. Dany has deliberately put herself in the path of a massive army to try to save King's Landing and burnt one of her closest friends to death, and Bran got his fucking eye cut out and is dealing with it pretty well.
Not sure you can really say they're all pussies.

I'm getting a little tired of defending this and A Knight's Watch tbh though. I don't read heaps of ASoIaF fics, but from what I have read I think he does scope and interesting AUs better than most others. I think the stories get a lot of flak for the romance, which isn't great but it's not as terrible it's made out to be. Very easy to read past if you're more interested in the larger plot at hand (that being Robert fucking Baratheon invading with a horde of Dothraki and mercenaries, need I remind you).

Plus, that update rate is frankly insane for how long the chapters are.

I liked A Knight's Watch. Haven't really been able to get into the other one. I got as far as shortly after Rhaegar arrives in Winterfell before I stopped reading. Something just rubbed me wrong.
