Well traditionally speaking, an adept is the rank between journeyman and master in the apprentice system. Apprentices are subservient to their master(s) and are not allowed to do any work without their master's approval. Journeymen are allowed to perform a day's work and receive pay but are restricted from taking on long term projects alone. Adepts are completely independent of a master but have not yet achieved that unique contribution to the craft that would truly distinguish them. A master is someone who has created or completed a work of massive importance that immortalizes their name in the history of their craft.

The rank of adept is fairly archaic and not commonly used in the present day. Arguably years 1-5 are apprentices, OWLs distinguish journeymen, NEWTs yield adepts, and those rare few who do further research and work in their chosen fields become masters.

In some pieces of fantasy fiction (notably Piers Anthony's Adept series), the rank of adept and master have been reversed so that adept in the ultimate level of skill and dedication. This seems to be restricted purely to the "sword and sorcery" genre of fantasy literature that focus on magical characters.
