Is what against the rules? Nothing has been taken up, and obviously if it was whoever did it would get prior permission first.

I assumed given that IP82 and jackofdiamonds are no longer available, if anyone had to take up their stories it had to be without any permission whatsoever.

However, as you do point out nothing has been taken up yet, so I suppose its alright.

Yeah, unless the author's permission is specifically given, you can't take up a story. The same goes for when the writer can't be found any more. It's courtesy, above all.

Eh, unless the original author doesn't complain and it's made clear that you're continuing it unofficially then it's fine, to the best of my knowledge. If the author isn't around to protest, then shit luck to them.
One day I will get around to betaing it too. :awesome

So, do we need JKR's permission to write fan fiction now for some reason? Continuing an unfinished fic is essentially just fanfiction of fanfiction, so what's the issue here? We're already copying/continuing someone else's work, why can't we just copy a copy?

    Just my two cents.

JKR has basically given us her permission in several interviews, I believe she even stated in one such interview that she even reads some it.

Thor Nairda is alive as of a week and a half ago. :O

I don't know if any of you know him, but he was in my estimation the finest of the earlier authors. A huge imagination and gift for writing scenes with the maximum impact in violence and tension. Underrated in that he was the first writer with a talent for worldbuilding in the fandom. Maybe he and Thalarian are the two people I wish never vanished. I was disappointed to find that there was a diminished opinion of him by others on DLP, but in my opinion, at the time, he was really the premier example of the writer that we should aspire to be, and his work stands the test of time very well.

The story I have in mind is Shadow Play. Thor unfortunately is adamant that he won't continue any of his old fics (which also includes The Demon Within). So I'm going to ask him to see if I can.

    Taking the first step,
    Andro

    Good luck, Andro.

@cloud: It wouldn't matter if JKR gave her permission or not - even if she expressly forbid anybody from writing fanfiction, it would still be legal do write in the US. I don't know about UK copywrite law, but the majority of fanfiction gets written in the US anways.

We should totally invite JKR to this site. Just to show her how it is done.

On the matter of taking up abandoned fics, what Pajama said.:awesome

I'm straight-up finishing Knowledge Is Power, because it'd piss the author off. Part of the reason I was so fixated on finding Jono was to get his permission to finish the Stranger Trilogy (and any notes/outlines he'd made).

For as many abandoned fics that I'd love to see finished, there's tons more completed fics that I'd want to re-write.

    Anne Rice would say differently.

Then again, Anne Rice is a bitch who is hung up on her own fantasies, so...

And yet there is still Anne Rice fan fiction. Not on FF.net mind you, but you don't need to look too hard to find any. Actually, if you do a summary search on FF.net for 'Lestat', I bet you'll find a few dozen stories, Anne Rice ban notwithstanding.

    Edit: Make that 161.

Yes its not illegal or anything but its in poor taste to continue someone's work without their permission.

I did a research paper in Business Law on copyrights.

I found out because of what fanfiction is (being borderline illegal), you have very little claim to the stories you created. Someone could, legally, rewrite your story or finish it off without your permission. I don't think it is very nice, but it is legal.

There are tons of stories I would either rewrite or finish off.

My top choice is Proof Of Existence by Niger Aquila.
I adored her other two books in the series.

    I want to see finished:
    - The Song of the Trees by Tinn Tam
    - Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures' Past ( I know the author is technically still alive... but less than one update a year...)
    - Incorruptible by neren (not sure if abandoned)
    - Any uncompleted fic by Amerision

There are so many great fics that are just sitting around collecting dust. I think we need to finish them :awesome

I believe last time I messaged Tinn, she said the next chapter of 'Song...' was definitely in the works.

I've tried tracking down The Jack of Diamonds before, to no avail.

I've also tried tracking down Thalarian. I've found him on myspace and facebook, but he doesn't answer messages.

I really would have liked to have seen Taliath's two main HP stories completed, but it's unlikely. He's said their both abandoned. I asked for the outline of "In Light...", considering finishing it off, but never got a reply.

I know how a few of the other stories mentioned here end, it's just a case of getting a hold of the author, and getting their permission to mention it...

I'm curious. Is finishing someone else's work psychologically more rewarding? Most writers have already trouble finishing their own work - why would they have more luck with someone's else for that matter?

And while I admit that seeing some of my favourite works finished appeals me, I'd rather see some new exciting fanfictions - or even some original work.

I simply don't understand. Call me stupid but I fail to see the purpose of this.

    No.

Stories that are explicitly put up for adoption? Sure.

Abandoned fics? No. Not without permission.

This is why Tridentwatch was so hated. He took an abandoned story and carried on writing it. (Of course, he then compounded it by ban evasion, but it was the plagiarism which originally led to the ban).

No, it wasn't. Tridentwatch was banned for the use of smileys.

Even though "adopting" without the author's permission is plagiarism. Especially as it usually includes copypasting the already published chapters.
