Subject: Aerin's Challenge #1

Challenge #1 :

Summery: When Nymphadora Tonks over-hears Dumbledore forbidding her parents to contact Harry Potter who lives two niehgborhoods over, she takes a pamphlet sent to her by a friend (So you're a wizard?) and leaves it on Harry's doorstep.

Rules:
* Harry must be age 5 when the story starts.
* The two spells in the pamphlet must be Lumos and a color-changing spell
* Harry can't be amazing with wandless magic. Capable of only small stuff. Lumos, Leviosa, Incendio would be the limit
*Harry can't somehow magically get his hands on amazing magical books that make him uber. He just knows what the pamphlet told him.

a: Basic wizarding timeline (From the time of founders/ Merlin)
b: Explanation of what magic is (I leave this up to the creativity of the author)
c: Introduces Albus, Corneliu and Madame Bones (Three most influential figures possibly)
d: Contains basic info on Harry Potter and the whole BWL fame.

* Harry must be sorted into Hufflepuff
* He must have a Slytherin friend (Tracy Davis or Daphne Greengrass preferably), a Hufflepuff friend (Hannah Abbot) and a Ravenclaw friend (Up to the challenged. Male would be good to balance out the male/female ratio)
*Love interest has to be the Slytherin girl
*He msut see Nymphy as an older sister figure

That's my challenge.

And here's a bit of explaining on the rules.

And as to the whole "Nymphadora-as-big-sister" thing, I find it quite possible. She's the niece of Sirius black, thus closely enough related to act as one.



1: Preferably 5 because I feel that's young enough to still accept it and young enough so pre-age 2 memories haven't completely faded.
2: As we saw in Order of Phoenix, lumos isn't tracked by the Ministry, presumably since no magic leaves the wand.
3: I'm honestly sick and tired of Uber!Wandless!Harry stories. It's like trying to stab someone. You can use a knife (wand) or your fingers. Invariably, a knife wins out
4: I hate Gryffindor!Harry honestly, and there aren't enough Hufflepuff!Harry stories. And due to his upbringing, it would be easy to fathom he is very loyal and protective of what he has.
5: A Slytherin friend would help bring out Harry's cunnining nature, Hannah would help mellow the cunning to a more strategic mindset and the Ravenclaw friend would allow Harry to further develop the mindset and further push him in schoolwork.
6: Tracy/ Daphne is hot. Harry need's a hot chick. Nuff said.

And that is the scope of the challenge. I leave most of the rules up for the author to change so long as they remain within the rough scope.

I realise it's a bit of an odd challenge, but I'm odd.

And yes, I'm expecting to get flamed worse than Vesuvius.

Ugh, canon rewrite. I suppose I could knock up a butterfly effect reason the pamphlet redirects Harry to the 'Puffs, but really, why bother? Your challenge is nothing that hasn't been done to death already.

 

I sorta like your challenge, but has anyone ever finished a fic that spanned all seven years?

Anyway, why do you think that Harry learning a few bits of magic before going Hogwarts would make him into a Hufflepuff? If anything, he would be significantly more self-confident and thus even more likely to end up in Gryffindor. Or possibly Ravenclaw or Slythering, if he wanted more knowledge or power, respectively.

Growing in an abusive home, essentially friendless because of Dudley and his gang, and having peers that lack his innate magical abilities is certainly not a repice for a Hufflepuff.

 

Why do you want to include wandless magic at all? Unless you would want to show that all wizards are actually capable of doing small things with it, and indeed the reason Purebloods struggle at the start of Hogwarts the same as muggleborns is that they have to get used to a wand, having only done minor wandless spells before. Say that all wizards are capable of doing the likes of lumos etc wandless, then perhaps you could include a comedy aspect, where a stage magician sees Harry cause a flash of light, or change the colour of something. He takes Harry on as an apprentice of sorts, teaching him small tricks, and Harry goes to Hogwarts with the goal of finding ways to do all the really famous tricks, and perhaps uses his influence of BWL to be allowed to practice magic in front of muggles under the cover of being a stage magician..hmmmm interesting!
