    Havent finished it yet but I agree with rabid about it being info dumpy. Really liked the troublesome tale though and her alex being a type of bwl.

    It would be a plumb jolly plot twist if all this arc were an ellaborate practical joke from the Ozarkers towards those ruddy furriners who look down on them. I mean, a Questing Dress (see this chappy's illustration), indeed.

    I'm going to guess she'll be gone for 1-2 weeks. I wonder what magical creatures she'll meet up? The gold in the adventure tale and the tobacco she was given was some cool foreshadowing.

    If one goes by the book cover, might it be that Granny Pritchard will craft Alex a wand out of a glass rod and demiguise hair? If so, she'd better start working on wandless summoning, since it'll be a bitch to find it in the mornings. Excellent for duelling, though, it'll make difficult to read which spell will come next.

    I was a bit surprised. I found this chapter quite ... forced. Inverarity writes the way I do; the stories are constructed and the corset then smoothed with padding to make it flow. So if this feels like the plot
    with the hill dwarves
    was bludgered into shape, some of the smoothing is missing. I had the impression of seeing the corset -- it was clear where the story was supposed to be, so that's where it went, instead of moving there "naturally". Odd.

    I agree. This chapter felt a bit rushed. I can understand why - it's good we're getting into the plot now and the Ozarks while fascinating haven't been action heavy.

    Heh, I wouldn't be surprised. I also decided the better word is skeleton, but I guess the point is clear :p

    I think the moment where I felt it most acutely was moving from
    talking with the hill dwarf to suddenly being tied up and carried away by a dozen.
    There's something surreal in that turn of events which indicates a mismatch between where the reader is and where the story.

    Both points on their own are fine, and "rushed" is kinda the wrong word @RabidAsparagus, because that's more applicable if you just write the story down. Here, you do it backwards (though Inverarity may correct me about his process) -- the plot points are exactly where they are supposed to be, and the time between them is exactly right by definition, and now you think of ways to make that work; instead of making something work first and then seeing where the plot points end up.

    But the transitions in this are a bit lacking resp. unconvincing.


    Anyway, not a story-breaking issue obv., but given the high quality of the rest of the stuff, it sticks out a little bit.

    Latest chapter is quite interesting
    with See's From Laurel seeming like a cousin of the Generous Ones, maybe a species that stayed aboveground when humans came to call and then slowly dwindled away over time. Alexandra having to go kill a monster reminds me of the Valbone fic. With her shitty wand and less of her tools she's going to have to use her wits. I hope she can negotiate with the jumplicate but not holding out for it.

    Chapters are starting to feel short to me even though they're quite long. I'm going to take a break from it for the next two weeks and maybe do a short reread before I pick it back up. I prefer to let the chapters build up.

    How long is this book supposed to be?

    We are already on chapter 17 (80k+ words) and we haven't even ended the summer. Don't get me wrong, I like the story so far, but either this book is MUCH bigger than the others, or the school year is going to be glossed over entirely.

    So its 288k and it'll have 59 chapters. I'm alright with the pace so far.
