What did people think? I enjoyed it. I was surprised by how not-bothered I was by Danny McBride being there. Never saw Prometheus and there's callbacks but it just made it a mysterious aspect of the plot.

Just got out of the theater and I loved it. The female lead was going all Sigourney Weaver out there. It helps to have seen Prometheus, but you won't be too terribly lost if you haven't. The plot was good. The visuals were predictably great. The acting and dialogue were better than average.

I think bad judgment is a pet peeve of mine in these types of movies. Not just bad judgment but the occasions were something dumb is decided upon and everyone willingly goes along with it. Or when they say or do things that don't make sense for the character as they have been presented to say or do. I really am just looking for a way to break any sort of attachment that I have with the characters by blaming their gross misfortune and horrible deaths on their own stupid choices. When they're not particularly dumb, I feel more sympathetic and emotionally invested and when they are inevitably ripped to pieces I see myself. I'm a bit of a wimp and on screen stupidity helps me break immersion and feel less tense/scared. The decisions made by the characters here had internal consistency and made sense, even when they were the wrong decisions. That's a large part of what made this movie good to me.

TL,DR: The movie was quite good. I actually cared about the people dying. 8/10

Yeah, I agree that at no point were they doing stupid things. The security team being always present, and them breaking off people to escort those who went off on side things really lent it some credibility. The couple aspect was, thankfully, not mentioned explicitly or a plot point - just a fact. The shower scene made my ball hair twitch in discomfort, as did the basement scene with the eggs.

Female lead is actually one of the weak points for me, since I think she has those always-about-to-cry type eyes. She was doing badass stuff but she looked like she was a good poem away from breaking down in tears, whereas Sigourney was warrior woman full stop.

Yeah, I was also ready to dislike her for much the same reason. What sold me on her was when she grabbed her rifle and exited the relatively safe confines of her escape craft to slay that stow-away. She can be as teary eyed as she wants imo if she's running around with stones that big. Same actress from Fantastic Beasts, I believe.

It was good, everything felt solid. Better than Prometheus.

The android switch was almost predictable. I am a bit torn about that, but it was hard to sell either way. A happy ending would have been too easy, the switch was the obvious thing to do.

Oh this isn't really a sequel to Prometheus then? We never find out what happens to the female Dr. who went looking for the human progenitors?

Ah fuck, it is. I didn't like her in that either. I agree with you on her actions though, she definitely wasn't a coward.

Just saw it, I enjoyed it. Definitely felt very... real. Nothing broke the immersion for me. While the captain was... questionable in his intelligence, it wasn't overly frustrating and he died for it.

I came into it without any real background knowledge, but I had seen the original Alien a long time ago. I was also really happy that it wasn't just about the jump scares, it had a real story to tell.

Overall, a good but forgettable movie - 7/10.

I just went and saw it today, and I must say that I largely agree with Innomine. It was a more like B horror/slasher movie than Prometheus was.

My problem with the movie was, quite simply, continuity. I believe it did not function as an effective addition to the other Alien films, and I felt that the film itself was very choppy.

One thing that I disliked, purely for continuity's sake, was the captain's chestburster. It emerged as a miniature of the adult xenomorph. In the original Alien (also directed by Ridley Scott), the chestburster bore a closer resemblance to a yellow worm, albeit one with teeth and tiny arms. Part of the suspense was generated by the maturation of the creature. This miniature did not generate the same suspense, and also had the fastest gestation and growth cycle of any alien except the ones in Alien Vs. Predator.

Furthermore, I didn't like the lack of Engineers in the movie. We're given to understand that they all perished as a result of David's release of the Chemical A0-3959X.91 – 15, but I still think they could have been included in a more satisfying way. This is, apparently, their homeworld, yet we see only one city. Certainly possible, but slightly immersion breaking.

Moreover, the Engineers we see in this film are very, very different from the ones we see in Prometheus. In Prometheus, they were an intelligent race with unbelievable levels of technology. They dressed in some form of bio-mechanical suits, and had very pale skin and symmetric, almost identical, features.

In Covenant, they are not as pale, and their features are both different and much less symmetrical. They dress in clothes that would not be out of place in the medieval era, instead of tech-suits. Their city is constructed entirely of stone, and based on what we see, entirely devoid of technology. This is very odd, because they had always been presented rather like tech-gods. It almost seems like a different race entirely.

To me, the entire film felt rushed. The first third of the movie was devoid of interesting content. The second third felt like something out of a slasher film, and the last third felt almost like an Alien film. It also lacked appropriate transitions between action and calm, and never built any form of suspense.

The crew were a faceless crowed of extras that I could rarely differentiate between. I had no emotional investments in them, and so was never disturbed by their deaths. By the end of the movie, I really only knew four people: the captain, Daniels, Walter, and David.

Michael Fassbender did a superb job of playing both androids, and I enjoyed the final twist where Walter reveals himself to be David. I also thought that the bit where the crew was stranded in the grass with the Neomorphs quite good. It was the only part of the movie I thought remotely scary.

All told, a 6/10. Alien: Covenant is to the Alien franchise as Terminator: Genisys is to the Terminator franchise.

Just saw it and kinda dissapointed, the movie was okay but it didn't have any interesting/new ideas.

The characters were boring cardboards and you would be hard pressed to give a shit about any of them.

Main female character was a uninteresting Ripley ripoff, starting as a normal person but going crazy action hero without any transition in between to make it more believable, besides don't like the actress she really seems like she is made out of glass and about to cry at any second.

I didn't believe her being in charge or a badass like Ripley at any second hope she won't be the MC in the sequels.

It also felt very messy trying to have a mix of genres with not succeding at any and the Prometheus plot points being shoved in and rushed to finish them.

The only standout was David with Fassbender again delivering.

But I didn`t like the world building with David creating the Xenomorph seems to retcon the Alien Queen and it just destroys the mystery about the Alien even more making it less and less scary.

Also was annoyed by the stupidity of the Captain after seeing Davids crazy scientist stuff, knowing that David tried to protect the Alien after it slaughtered a crew member he still followed him in a enviorment he didn't know and trusted him that the eggs weren't dangerous without any caution :facepalm

All in all a pretty mediocre movie only worth watching if you are a Alien fan. I prefered Prometheus over it because despite it's problems it had some standout scenes while this is a pretty forgettable affair.
