I know the Harry Potter series is an Urban Fantasy series and as such talking about space travel and aliens isn't really a thing.

However, in any setting in which magic is real and in some way genetic (like it is in HP, don't deny it) one could always ask a simple question.

"Suppose life on other planets exists, do they have magic as well?"

My personal head-canon is that yes, yes they do. But it is not human magic, obviously.

To illustrate it we should also look at House Elves, Goblins and Centaurs. These are not exactly human, but have some forms of magic, giving proof that magic obviously isn't a human-only thing. I like to look at it as one would look at radio frequencies (being an electrician in my case, this view is very inviting), in that there is only one magic, but it exists on many frequencies which various races can tap into.

So, aliens. We need a good example, so let's use something known to people. How about the cliche Grey Aliens from 'Zeta Reticuli' found in such places as conspiracy theories, the X-Files, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Stargate SG1 and many others.

Let's assume that these Greys live indeed in the Milky Way Galaxy, in the Zeta Reticuli system. On the 'muggle' side they are more technologically advanced, possessing ships capable of interstellar travel (come on, it's a common trope to have them secretly visiting Earth). But if we assume that some of them also have access to magic and that they are also using magic, how would that look? Not all societies are the same, especially when we speak about beings with a literally alien way of thinking.

Perhaps the magic users completely took over and out-bred the regular Greys, their technology being so advanced thanks to magic? Perhaps the Grey Wizards actually were eradicated a long time ago? Or perhaps they coexist together? Various possibilities could be valid in a setting like this and I'd like to know what DLP thinks about this topic.

HP magic is too 'soft' in the sci-fi sense to be able to draw any sort of inference for alien life one way or the other, so go nuts if that's what floats your boat.

Often attributed to S.M Stirling in Dies the fire the term Alien Space Bat was invented by Alison Brook on soc.history.what-if. Its also a popular sub forum on AlternateHistory.com and other similar forums and is used to house the more fantastical topics and discussions of events which require magic or a divine being to occur.

Proceed to shower me in bonus points.

As for the topic at hand, I always like the idea I first saw in Brown Coat, Green Eyes, that just as there are Wizards and Muggles, there are Magical and Muggle planets. That is while magic itself is universal, only on some planets can magical beings evolve while on others its impossible and like in Brown Coat, Green Eyes a wizard born on a non magical planet would end up a squib.
