The recent Harry/Pansy fics in For Review got me searching for the pairing.

    http://wizard-love.livejournal.com/75091.html

I liked this one. Wouldn't recommend it for the library, but it's a fun little fic. Not gonna spoil it, but the reason Pansy keeps getting rejected from the Aurors from awesome.

It's as good as any Harry/Pansy story I've read and it had some moments that were damn amusing. Thanks for the rec.

Yeah that story was pretty good. Better than the two in the review forum in my opinion. I wish something like that got submitted for the April contest.

Reading the first chapter now, and I have to admit, the depth in this fic' so far is pretty refreshing. The author seems to have actually done some research, like with the salt.

I'll guess my opinion may change as I get deeper in, however.

    Titans updated.

The small exertion in magical stupidity (which was there for the sole reason to fit that sniper rifle in) and the Buffy reference that hopefully stays a reference aside, the story's working. I can't wait for the next meeting between Harry and Daphne :3

Well, DLP got a mention in the AN, so the writer will probably keep track of the feedback he receives in this thread.

If this has already been recc'd, then excuse me while I herp on my derp:

Title: Harry Potter and the Temporal Beacon
    Author: willyolioleo
    Pairing: Harry/Hermione
    Rating: T
Story Summary: At the end of 3rd year, Hermione asks Harry for some help with starting an interesting project. AU, Timetravel, HHr, mild Ron bashing. Minimizing new powers, just making good use of existing ones. Will never be complete. Major reset: here we go again.

The only mention I found of this fic, was in a newb's profile (AtYourCervix), and this quote from the Pet Peeve's thread:

    Emphasis mine.

Trap Story is as good of a designation I can think of for this particular fic. It does, indeed, start out fairly interesting, with little grammar mishaps and an interesting premise. Then it predictably jumps ship: Hermione dominating Harry, shitty romance (at one point, Hermione "bit her lip seductively" while in her Third year. Buck-teeth + seductive lip-biting? I LOL'd into my palm as it approached my face.), animagus training, snowballing into blatant character bashing, etc.

Then it really jumped the fucking boat, because the author wasn't kidding about the neverending part in the summary. As soon as s/he gets tired of an idea or plot bunny, Harry and Hermione will die and return their memories to Third year. I don't even feel bad spoiling it for you, because WTF.

Remember how Unsung Hero ended? Now imagine that the sequel ended the exact same way. As did the third book. You get the picture.

As such, it's more of a stockpile for ideas and plot bunnies than any real attempt at good fiction, which puts it right on par with Methods of Rationality and Partially Kissed Hero. And since I know some of you perverts read one or both of those fics, I thought I'd throw a third option into the mix.

    tl;dr

PROS: decent ideas, lots of decent-sized chapters
CONS: willyolioleo = Perfect Lionheart = LessWrong

I can't say I'd give MoR anything more than a 4/5 on a good day, but please go shoot yourself.

That said, I couldn't get past chapter 5. I could tell where it was going and the future of the story ruined the present (much like the story itself, really).

Because Partiallly Kissed Hero doesn't even count as Harry Potter fanfiction anymore, after the point where Lionheart introduced Wonderland it just turned into brain-vomit.

A Xanatos Pileup and Adult!Eleven-year-olds isn't really that bad compared to hopping back and forth from parody to seriousness, violating all of reality, oh, and, you know, the main characters turning into fucking fairies. And the nukes. Don't forget the nukes. Oh, and bringing dead people back to life, just because. Now my brain hurts.

Both of the authors are pretty damn near equal in my eyes.

I didn't read that far into PKH but when I stopped reading it was way worse than MoR. While MoR is a series of story arcs instead of a novel, PKH is a clear indication the author is psychotic.

Just because LessWrong is, admittedly, a gigantic dick, doesn't mean his story sucks. It's not great - the two problems I mentioned are only the biggest. The pacing is iffy and, like Blaise said, he goes on random tangents unnecessarily, but it's not the average steaming shit-pile that you find on FFN.

He's basically achieved his aim for the story - to rationalize the HP world. Whether or not you agree with his interpretations is rather irrelevant - given JKR's world, you sometimes have to just choose one. His characterizations are decent if not great, and he's finally getting around to the plot (though the last few chapters have been somewhat tangential).

I read Partially Kissed Hero about a month after I started reading fanfiction and I wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole now.

This is the exact sentence I'd use to describe Methods of Rationality.

Just because Lesswrong has a better grasp of the english language than most ranting self insert writers... doesn't mean MoR isn't a ranting self insert.

It's just a grammatically superior ranting wish fulfillment self insert.

Him achieving his goals =/= MoR being a good story, or a story at all for that matter. Many authors that have written self-indulgent, smug, condescending pieces of literature designed to educate the common man may feel as if they've gotten their points across, they're still not good stories.

And by the time I left the story- when Quirrel had students kick Harry's ass then spit on him to prove some inane point I was wondering just when the fuck Dumbledore had been killed and replaced by a gigantic, dripping pussy.

And you know one of the greatest things about being on DLP? You don't need to "settle".

If by rationalizing the HP world you mean raped it to the point where it's no longer recognizable as the HP world then yes, you're right.

As has been stated many times, MOR is neither a good story nor particular rational. It's blatant self-insert, ranting wish fulfillment on the level of shitty harem fics.
