    Yes.

But then... by the rules of SB and SV, Game of Thrones would get banned as well. Ditto with the Bible or the actual Lolita novel. I'm not sure HOW graphic 50 shades of grey is, haven't read it... but there is that suspicion that it'd get banned and not because of bad writing.

Oh, there was a big hooha about such stuff getting by on literature merits and such. But by the rules, they'd be given exceptions by the mods and/or admins, no free-passes before such... otherwise, points and warnings along with bans would get applied.

I think that says just about all that's needed to know about spacebattles moderation then really.

On topic, has any one been keeping up with Unnatural Disaster? I saw it linked a few posts back and read through it all. I think it's pretty good from what I've read any way, there's been like one "kiddo" deployed, and no random lesbian romance shoe horned in.

Having said that the last few chapters have pushed it pretty firmly into 'rationalist' territory, not so much as philosophical arguments pushed forward but instead the absolutely insane power creep that tends to happen.

All in all I think it's worth reading if nothing else.

I'm about 95% certain that it would have.

The Spacebattles mods are retarded and draconian, for reasons which have never been adequately explained. I just shrug and roll with it, for the most part, but it's still really fucking dumb.

Yeah I like it, kind pissed that Danny has such a prominent role in the story, especially now that he's some kind of OP cape. I do enjoy how Taylor is gradually more inhuman. She has hundreds of bodies atm and just removed her need for sleep last chapter.

Seriously? That makes literally no sense to me. IIRC it's something that never even shows up on screen - like, we never meet a ringleader or see a sex slave or hear about a specific instance of it - it's just mentioned a few times that "yeah that's a thing the ABB does." Would you also get banned for having a character in a sci-fi story go, "Hey Mark you have the time machine set to go to Roman Polanski's house, that's probably a bad idea."

Is this kind of draconian attitude a feature of just SB, or both SB and SV? From an outsider's perspective they seem kind of like the same thing. Although I do really, really like SV's threadmarks and wish Lord Ravenclaw would incorporate something like it into WbA. *Cough.*

It's gotten to such a silly point that I gave up. The best part of that story was when Sophia and Taylor had their humanizing moments after
random dude I forgot the name of died.
After that Taylor became increasing OP and for not much of a story. The character moments are nice. Then it started to be about the plot as they removed all the side characters to make way of Taylor being OP. The plot of an OP character fighting things is boring and pointless. I can go read a bad Superman story if I want that.

It's more of the user base. The user base on SB seems to have the intelligence of people that think Transformers was made to be a serious story. If any romance is introduced, expect pages of pages of terrible plot breaking story breaking garbage omakes. If anything sexual is introduced in any manner, expect pages of pages of people attempting to write sex. It's a bit like if the FF.net userbase reviews attempting to be helpful and funny.

That spoilered event also struck me as strange in the way it treated Danny. Sure, he thinks it's important enough for therapy, but never makes the clear connection that
Maybe his kid shouldn't be fucking fighting gangs, especially if people are dying

So the whole epiphany is just lost.

But then the fic just goes exponentially OP and that all drops off. To give credit to the author, at this point he's trying to deal with the psychological effect of the escalation on Taylor but I'm not sure what else he can do.

It all depends on the context that you use your example.

If you use the "time machine" quote and everyone in the story agrees that it is serious and a very bad thing then you're free and clear, but you'll probably be warned off by an overreactive member for skirting too close to the no underage sex rule. There will be a seventeen page derail and then things should get back to normal.

Now if you use that line as a joke... oh fuck... "shame on you for thinking that child porn is funny, and shame on everyone else that didn't report you. You should be banned, and everyone else that didn't report you obviously promotes pedophilia, because of the seriousness of that 'joke'. You should be ashamed!!! Everyone should be ashamed!!!!"

    *ahem*

Yes, this happened. It's paraphrased, but the scolding is pretty close to what was written. So... if you're considering posting a story there then put on your extremist glasses and go over your story with a pervert's-eye. Anything that might/maybe/could be taken out of context should be immediately deleted. God forbid you actually make a direct joke... you'd probably be flogged soon after you hit the enter button.

I know I ranted about this before, but he just admits/implies that he's a horrible person. Wtf?
I don't have anything against protagonists who are assholes or sociopaths or straight up villains. It's only strange when this is specifically a Self-Insert.

Like, what if Nabokov had advertised Lolita as a self-insert novel? How comfortable would people be about reading it then? Or about hanging out with the author?

I don't see it as particularly strange. I mean, if Nabokov wrote Lolita as a SI, sure I'd be creeped out by him IRL. Well, I'd be creeped out because he'd be a zombie, but anyways...
That would be because I know who wrote it.

It's the internet. If you're not being a moron and don't post personal info everywhere you go, you can be pretty certain nobody IRL will ever know you admitted to being a complete asshole.

So if Author XxVillainxX writes a story about a sociopathic SI, well, good for him or her.

    As for
there's a whole subset of the population that is somewhat fascinated by criminals (e.g. Dexter, Hannibal, etc etc...)
You yourself admit being okay with reading about psychos.
What is the difference between those stories and an SI? A change of perspective. A switch between 3rd and 1st person. I don't feel it is that significant.
If you can distance yourself from a protagonist in XYZ novel, why can't you do it for a SI?

The difiference is that we can assume that the author has some distance from the characters in the case of shows like Dexter and can show horrible shit without being horrible themselves. And maybe SI writers aren't horrible but are playing out a fantasy, it still comes off as weird.

Yeah, I can understand how one could be a little weirded out by some of those fanfictions, especially the more... vivid ones.

It's just something I can set aside if the writing is enjoyable enough.

Has anyone read firebird? It's by the same person that wrote Acceleration, and is a crossover with x-men I believe (not too sure on comics sorry), in that Taylor triggers with the phoenix force or obtains the phoenix force somehow. The story is quite well written in my opinion and is worth checking out.

I was keeping up with it and it was pretty good, up until the most recent couple of posts following Danny's call. Since then, the pace seems to have slowed down massively and nothing interesting has been happening. I quit after the update that was fully focused on Emma.

I think the author knows how to wrote fairly well and seems to know how to tell a story. Recently though I think either he ran out of steam or isn't sure where to take the plot as there has been almost no progression, forcing me to lose interest.
