Nah, the problem with Worm is that it takes real planning as a writer to attempt to diverge from canon. The butterflies from not following the stations of canon are fucking massive due to the inherent nature of having a setting full of precogs and such. Most Worm fanfics start off with a trite little disclaimer telling us there's been no planning done and they're winging it. That's probably the reason most fics peter out after around 70k words and/or Leviathan.

I read it for a little while and grew bored, because nothing of note happened except for angst. I'll probably go back after a bit and try again, like I did with Worm in the beginning.

It took about an arc and a half for me to get pulled in (right up to when those meetings started happening). I felt like it could go into a sort of generic indy! route or turn out a bit more interesting than they'd appear on the surface, but I've enjoyed the story so far. The first arc was just pretty rough and all over the place.

Lol glancing over it all, I admittedly thought it was about a fic.

So...the Joker as played by 4chan? That sounds worse than most shitty SB quests.

Not necessarily, I think it's going well so far. It's the Joker powerset, joker personality characteristics are a side effect which were trying to find a solution towards in quest.

The fact that you think it's going well is indicative of how trash this quest truly is.

Ladies and Gentleman, I present to you the peak of fanfiction. The HP/Worm crossover, Simurgh's Son, by Darth Marrs. The mad bastard has done it again with another rousing success. Highly recommended by both myself and @Zombie, your day will not be complete without feasting your eyes on the superb plotting, sublime prose, and supremely nailed characterisations within.

Simurgh's Son draws from a rich history of fanfiction ideas, including such classics as power up tattoo runes from that one Canadian vampire rape school trilogy, slave!Harry who sits there and takes it until such a time he can put on his robe and wizard's hat despite being on good terms with Legend, the gathering of every other half attractive female character into groping range, the deaths of every male rival character that would have come with them, and above all, the time honoured theme of grimderp, complete with 7D Contessa Speed Chess.

"As Ollivander once said, terrible yes, but great." - @Zombie

"I didn't know it was possible to write so much for so long for so few without improving, but somehow Marrs has done it." - @TheWiseTomato

    "MUH PATHS" - Contessa

I actually just read this a couple of days ago, and I agree with pretty much everything you just said. Still, I actually did find myself genuinely enjoying parts to play devils advocate (I think at least, I’m not sure if you’re actually recommending it or putting it on blast, or both I suppose) - the latest chapter from Taylor’s perspective for example I thought was actually pretty cool and shows some of her creativity and quick thinking from canon most FanFiction authors struggle to replicate.

Harry is out of character but he’s not even really Harry Potter, just some traumatised kid with his memories which I think allows some leeway. I also with frustrated with him remaining a slave for so long when he didn’t have to, but again this is a kid who’s been pretty much held in captivity as long as he can remember so I’d say that’s again somewhat in character, and it’s clever he doesn’t want to be reliant on any of the heroes for help. Saying he’s on good terms with Legend might be somewhat of an overstatement, as he’s been angry with him for most of the story.

Overall I’d say I liked it. It’s the classic formula that makes darth marrs the king of almost recommended, where it’s competent writing, hell even good writing sometimes, marred (see what I did there) by some of the retarded things you mentioned that he can’t help himself from including. But while that might make him pretty trash tier in the HP fandom, that’s still pretty great in comparison to most of your usual spacebattles trash fics I’d say.

I think he stopped using editors a long time ago. Going without proofreading and critical response might in part account for his impressive lack of improvement.
Not that I think he ever listened much to anyone when it came to his plotting and characterisation.

Well if that isn't a damning indictment of the Worm fandom I don't know what is. And it's depressingly true.

I think my biggest issue with Darth Marrs is that he's perfectly capable of writing things that aren't over the top grimderp. His one HP/Star Wars fic with Kyle Katarn was entertaining if nothing special. I think his biggest problem (aside from illogical torturing his characters for no reason other than Drama) is that he writes characters that are incredibly OOC from the word go. The Firebird Trilogy has some interesting concepts, but I couldn't get past the first few chapters. His HP/Star Gate monstrosity is just a goddamn mess with three characters that happen to be named Harry, Hermione, and Luna. Anyway, not the place to critique his entire body of work.

Darth Marrs - taking interesting ideas and thoroughly fucking them up.
