@Dark Minion: That was actually pretty intense, considering how short it was.

Yeah, that was actually pretty decent. Not great, but it was readable. It sounds like it could be one of the tamer entries in the Ginny kill-off.

Eh - I don't like the scenes where the bad guy/girl explains his/her evil machinations, and this one shot centeres around such a scene.

Something new on the Harry/Tonks front, but on the lower end of the range from "barely readable to almost good". Maybe something if you have a sudden craving for the pairing..

Harry Potter has made some changes after his self-dubbed 'failures' at the MoM. He is now able to do magic out of school, and he is able to do it with deadly force and accuracy. M for sex, violence, and language. HP/NT and probably HP/NT/BL. Powerful!Harr

It's not great, but it kept me entertained for a while -- that is to say, I was alternating between WTF moments:
    and laughing, at sentences like:
Harry here gets constantly high on painkillers, which could explain his rapid mood swings ... although I don't know if that was intentional on the author's part. One moment he hates Dumbledore and Bellatrix, the next he forgives them because "everyone makes mistakes" ... and then, Harry, Tonks and Bellatrix go eating breakfast.

No really, but it's not that bad ... well, so maybe it is. But it's apparently a first attempt. Maybe it'll improve.

I just read this story over on tripping the hellmouth and I quite like it, but I don't think it will be everyones cup of tea. So try it and see what you think.

Hermione’s been screwed over by the Wizarding World and she’s not at all pleased by it.

This is a new one by Shade Dancer - the one who seems to have abandoned Blood Prince and its sequels.

Its quite good, but it seems to me to be too close to repeating the first book almost verbatim, changing events slightly but not enough to change the plot. Thats the big problem so far. Its quite early days though, so it might change on later.

Blood Sacrifice is actually marked as complete, if anyone cares. Lost interest in the series long ago, so I don't know about the quality.

I almost never read stories I know will turn slashy, I know it will save me a lot of frustration later on.

If you're willing to sort through a lot of crap in search of a good rewrite, feel free to check out my
c2. Be warned that this is more of a themed list than anything else, I only loosely skimmed the first few chapters in quite a few cases.

Harry Potter and the Sun Source by Clell65619

    By the author:
Clell's been posting segments of this on Caer Azkaban and has finally posted the first chapter on Ficwad.

Why Almost Recommended: You have the Unstoppable Force (A Most Excellent Crossover Premise: Chiun from "The Destroyer" raises Harry) meeting the Immovable Object (Clell sometimes does decent, but not library quality work. When he comes up with a great concept (think "Marriage Contracts"), the execution isn't quite there).

"Sun Source" has a great concept-- probably Clell's best one ever. Because I think it's his best concept, I hope this story remains on the tracks. However, Clell's not gotten over the hump with a breakthrough story, and unfortunately I can't help but wonder where will the story fall apart. I hope it doesn't.

    Title: Dark Lord Rising
    Author: AndrewsQuill
    Rating: T
    Genre: General/Romance
    Pairings: H/Hr, Remus/tonks(?)
    Status: WIP
Summary: Forced to compete in the Triwizard Tournament against his will, Harry faces things which no fourteen year old wizard should. A loss of innocence, coupled with betrayal, causes Harry to either give up or change in order to meet the challenges ahead.

    URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4336686/1/Dark_Lord_Rising

This is one of those stories that could have been a hell of a lot better than it actually is, especially when the writing style in later chapters has been taken into account. Problems include a H/Hr soul bond, remnants of Hurt/Comfort and angst (which I was actually expecting from the summary), and the author's desire to put more problems on Harry's shoulders than was directly necessary. This has been balanced with some really entertaining sequences.

This story is a pretty mixed bag, when all has been said and done. I was unsure if I should read it for quite a while, I finally relented out of boredom. I definitely would have wanted to know the information above before proceeding, though.

The Greatest Minister of Magic by BajaB
“...take the steps I have suggested, and you will be remembered, in office or out, as one of the bravest and greatest Ministers of Magic we have ever known.” - Albus Dumbledore – Goblet of Fire

It's a "What if..." oneshot of 1745 words, labelled as General/Humor. It's neither funny nor brilliant but covers a plotidea I haven't seen before.

I agree with Memory King about Dark Lord Rising, for sure. I've been reading it in moments of boredom between updates. It's a good concept, with lots of little problems, the soul bond being (in my eyes) the worst of them. Another is the way the author forces Dumbledore into a position of 'bad guy'.

Positives include a twist on the Voldemort-takes-Harry's-blood-to-regain-a-body idea. One small twist changes the idea completely. And I think I prefer it his way, as far as this goes.

Also, the one-shot, The Greatest Minster of Magic, is a nice concept. It'd be cool to read a full-length story that goes a similar route. Good find, Minion.

I would possibly have submitted it in For Review, if it hadn't been just another throw-away idea on the author's part. It doesn't quite stand on its own, and everyone will probably have forgotten about it in two years or so.

I debated about if I should put this up in "For Review" or the "Almost Recommended fanfiction". Matter of fact, I had already had this post type'd out in "For Review" and was about to press submit. before I changed me mind. There are some things that most around here will not like, in fact probably loath.

In the end, I felt that the story brought to the table something I hadn't seen before. A Dumbledore that was aware of Harry's living situation, but his hands were tied because of the letter of the law.

For the most part, the story is broken up into 7 pretty decent length chapters that chronicles Harry's 7 years at Hogwarts. Basically, "canon" was an illusion of sorts, with just enough truths thrown in to make "canon" seem real.

As I said before. there are probably some parts of the story that people here will not like. It features a heavy use of Time Turners. Some people might find some of the interaction between Harry and Hermione during their first Hogwart years to be, ikky? Also, we can't forget the love Weasley potions...

What surprises me the most is that someone was able to write a "good" Snape that I half-way like. Most people here just want Snape dead, myself included. It was... refreshing to read a different take for once. The Umbridge bit is probably over the top though.

That said, I still found it to be a decent story to read. I am just not sure if it would be Library worthy or not...

Smart!Harry and Good!Dumbledore repeating canon, changing only minor or inconsequential things, always creates plot-wholes. My review over at FFN is pretty shoddily worded in places, but it gets my point across. Let me see if I can find it.
    Aha!

    An interesting fic that one.
A little too borderline-incest for me though.
The only physical contact I had with my brother, was all strictly under the "Fisticuffs" catagory. Good Times.
I began to get worried when Phoenix Catcher went out of their way, several times, to mention that the twins "were fine with sleeping together nude". and i'm not at all surprised to learn in this thread, that he's homosexual and a chronic slash writer.

knothead's mention of clell65619's new story HP and the Sun Source looked an interesting enough way to pass some boredom this morning, and I've got to say, what's been posted on ficwad so far is fairly impressive. We don't learn too much about Harry there (yet), but I like the backstory.

Flitwick's personality (while only seen briefly) was pretty damned fun, as well. I'd suggest checking it out if you're bored. knothead linked it above.

It's the summer after 5th Year and Harry has...changed. Now guarding a prisoner who supports Voldemort, his life is on course at terminal velocity to hit the fan.
    Fiction Rated: M - English - Adventure/Romance - Chapters: 3 - Words: 16,486 - Reviews: 5 - Updated: 10-24-08 - Published: 10-23-08

Strange story, here. It's Harry/Daphne (even if she has brown hair ... which Daphne has brown hair??)

The plot device is meh (Daphne has to go to Harry's house for safety reasons), characters are OOC, events random. Not Library worthy, as it's fairly shitty in places, but there were some parts I liked.

Harry's life story wasn't that bad. If you like to see him flinging huge-ass spells around with names like "Steel Ice-Fire Tempest", it's there, and according to the author, Harry isn't Super!, because "Voldemort could easily devastate twice that number without breaking a sweat".

Harry seems quite OOC, even though there are reasons given for his behaviour ... but I had a hard time accepting it, it was just too abrupt in the beginning. It got better the longer I read, though.

Incidentally, I think the basic idea in the story has merits: Harry and Daphne stuck in one room, and then to write about the tension and dynamics between them. However, it would take a great character-writer to pull it of, and I feel that the author is in over his head in places.

So all in all, it's not particularly good, but at least it's mildly interesting ... and about Harry and Daphne.

    Edit:

Two new chapters, and damn it all, it's getting enjoyable. It's still completely out there, of course, but you simply switch off your brain and cheer, when Daphne and Harry start levelling Gringotts.

    A new guilty pleasure.
