    Eh. You don't have to apologise, scary. Y'know, opinions and shit :p

    I stand by what I said, though; for me it wasn't a waste of time, and that's something.

    Other stories (I think there was a recent one where Harry had discovered Slytherin's private chambers, saved Daphne from Malfoy, then took her down there and they became dual-multi animagi or whatever) made me wince and stop reading after a chapter; this one didn't, so it's better.

    *shrugs*

    I think it fits the thread rather nicely. If it were better, it wouldn't be here but in For Review. It suffers from the things you pointed out, but I can overlook that if it keeps me somewhat interested and wanting to see the next chapter. And this

    was for me indeed a point in favour -- sometimes, I really have no desire to see Harry changing over ten or twenty or even more chapters. It jumps right into the action; I like that. I said as much in my review to the author; I much rather have a story like this than countless chapters on how Harry trains and the story never gets anywhere (and eventually abandoned) ...

    From his reply, the author seems to be no idiot and knows that there's much room for improvement as well as being aware of clichés, so I'm hopeful that it just might get better.

    The sleep didn't help... I still have more problems with it than I can stand.

    I concede your point about character development. It's nice to read something action packed without the sometimes overly (?) long character development. I've read quite a few fics with Harry as instant badass from the start of the fic. I can't say there were many that actually were written with skill, though. Or something that I'd ever recommend here.

    This author here has a fairly decent grasp of the language. Grammar and a lack of paragraphs (although he/she does improve through the chapters) are his main issues, and then some pretty standard and cliche'd dialogue (particularly in the attack on the ball scene; Voldemort and Dumbledore's words) hurt it further. I can understand how it would be a nice, quick read for some. Just not for me.

    I don't remember the last time I've not enjoyed one of your recommendations, Sesc. That's why I did the apology. I'm finding this lackluster in all aspects.

    Perhaps, I was just in the right mood to read a story of that sort, but I thoroughly enjoyed what little there is posted of this one there.

    Yes, the huge paragraphs were bothersome to read but I don't have anything else to really complain about as of yet. The only character's action that I didn't quite like was Minerva's little "you've gone dark Harry and I'll stop you now" speech. Not impossible to happen(the old bat does kiss the earth where the Headmaster had walked on) but the way the dialog was written, it just didn't suite the scene where she has her first appearance in the story...

    This story has become hilariously bad. I never really liked it despite having a ridiculously high tolerance for indy!harry cliches. But now it has Voldemort wearing a toupee, Harry being a douche and one of the most truly retarded ideas for bringing down the Wizarding World I have ever read (which is really saying something for HP fanfic).

    That's why the story is under "Humor". Someone humorists are witty, others like this particular author achieve hilarity by shitty writing. The funny thing is that Potteraholic is always humorous, in all his stories.

    Discovery, by Potteraholic. It's an amusing story at the least. I have it on my alerts just for the funny moments it has. But then again, I'm easily amused.

    Discovery isn't bad, but the first chapter pissed me off, Daphne's reply seemed so fake, guess I am just using to hearing her with harsher or more delicate speech patterns, what an oxymoron.

    I still say Discovery isn't good enough for the library. It's definitely entertaining, but it's written too loosely plot-wise to make it in my opinion.

    I do have a new Harry/Daphne guilty pleasure though:

    Partners » by muggledad reviews Having the right partner can make life much smoother. The right persons can complement each other's strengths and support each other's weakness. Love really does make the world go 'round, especially with a Dark Lord after your blood. HP/DGRated: M - English - Romance/Adventure - Chapters: 3 - Words: 32,895 - Reviews: 89 - Updated: 4-30-09 - Published: 4-22-09 - Harry P. & Daphne G.

    WARNING: It is stupidly sappy. There is excessive Dursley abuse mentioned so far. It's not a very original premise.

    That said, I really like the chapters available so far. Intellectually, I know that the story is dumb, but I can't bring myself to care. In the latest chapter I'm liking how Daphne is just rolling with the politics. She's acting semi-giddy, which, I suppose if I hooked up with a legal-aged Presidential daughter is the manner in which I would act.

    Does Partners get better after the first paragraph? Got it from a c2 alert, didn't read much of it before closing the window.

    Here's another PS rewrite. Some refreshing characterisations, especially for those who're tired of seeing the same two-dimensional Ron over and over again. Author avoids some canon events, like Harry becoming Seeker, Troll Fighting, and detention in the Forest. This unfortunately leads to lack of conflict. Focus on music will definitely be a down-side for many, it just amused me, probably because of my boredom.

    On the whole, this fic doesn't have much to distinguish itself from other rewrites out there, aside from a moderately surprising ending. So I'm putting it here.

    Well, that is the reason I don't read humour: I simply don't find it funny most times. For me, Retarded!Death Eaters like Crabbe and Goyle is fail (I stopped reading Discovery at that point), and if I now hear Voldemort gets a toupee, that's simply retarded and I give it a FAIL/5. Oh well.

    Anyway, another story.

    Changes: Book 1 » by JohnPigeon reviews
    After his fifth year Harry is taken from Privet Drive by powerful vampires in order to be trained to defeat Voldemort. After his training he returns to his friends cold, hard and indifferent. Harry is on the path of revenge and no-one can stop him.
    Rated: M - English - Drama/Mystery - Chapters: 4 - Words: 11,710 - Reviews: 50 - Updated: 4-30-09 - Published: 4-21-09 - Harry P. & Fleur D.

    The writing is nothing special, more on the wrong side of average. About the only reason I'm reading it is because it's going to be Harry/Fleur, but then again, it's hardly past the setting-up stages, so I can't judge the plot anyway. If you have a sudden urge for H/F, you could give it a try, otherwise meh ... don't expect anything terribly deep or outstanding in here.

    Strangely enough, this is the point where I too abandoned this story. I managed to get through the fact that the author obviously didn't bother to even proof read his own chapters, but that was just terrible.

    I'd ask him to give me my time back, but who am I kidding? It's not like I have anything better to do.

    You call that a story? It's horrendous! I could barely read all the chapters.

    Childhood teaches us many lessons. Some, more useful than others. Be careful. Be sure, and above all else, blend in. Vastly AU. Harry Potter - Rated: T - English - Crime/Humor - Chapters: 2 - Words: 24,585 - Reviews: 14 - Updated: 2-27-09 - Published: 2-18-09 - Harry P.

    Only reason I am putting it here and not the For review thread is that it has only 2 chapters. The fic depicts the long lasting damage left on Harry's psyche by the Dursley's abuse.

    One part I particularly liked in the fic was the description on how Harry first comes across his parseltongue abilities. It was much better than the 'Zoo incident' in the canon.

    If you are reading this belleradh, I hope you will update soon.

    Agreed.

    In no particular order:

    Terrible dialogue;
    Fleur a Healer training at Hogwarts;
    Running training!Harry;
    Awfully done suave!Harry;
    Vampires training Harry; and
    Harry changing completely in two months, so that he dislikes Ron and Hermione and is badass...

    The list goes on. I doubt Harry/Fleur can save this. Naturally, though, almost every review is positive.

    To be honest the reason most reviews are positive is that the majority of those who dislike a fic simply close the window rather than leave a review saying why they disliked it. I know I did that with about 20 different fics today when I was brave enough to stumble back onto FF.net and search through some old communities I used to like. Putting in conscious effort to depreciate a fic you didn't like seems to most (myself included) like a waste of time. Unfortunately, this has the result of leaving only those who enjoyed the fic and WANT MOAR left. If the fic was good and then there were a few things wrong with it then I'm prepared to point out those issues. However, as a (reasonably) veteran fanfiction reader there are cliches and styles of writing out there which make me shut my eyes and wish I could have that time back.

    Changes had several of those, the reference to his old friends at the end of the first chapter was the final straw, I just couldn't be bothered to try the rest.

    I actually found the story to be mildly entertaining. First of all, Harry is away for a year, not for 2 months (time travel or something like that). The only other reason you seem to dislike the fic is because it has a large number of clichés but i don´t think these clichés are bad so I´m going to continue and read this.

    Besides, I don´t really care what is realistic. I´m not reading fanfiction because I think the way authors write character development is fascinating, I want my stories to start in the middle and skip the introductions.

    I'm putting this in almost because it's just plugging a plot hole and not a real story...

    Oh, Marzik, I read that one. It's grammatically well done, but I'm not at all fond of amoral! Serialkiller! Harry. Dark Harry is fine when done well, but that one is vastly OOC.
