It is very much suited for Almost Recc'd. Does well enough as a time waster, but like Spanks said, things don't start changing overly much until the tenth chapter.

A one-shot crossover with the sitcom Black Books, focusing on the main characters from that series but with a small appearance from HP near the end.

I felt it captured the style of Black Books and the voices of its main characters well. If you have fond memories of Black Books, as I do, it's worth a read for a bit of nostalgia and a few chuckles. If not, I wouldn't bother.

Okay so this isnt nearly recommended, if anything its about a 1.2/5.

    Link

But I just found it after about 8 years. Its the first long fanfic story I ever read, the ones before were just tiny fluff bits from I think Mugglenet.

The link is to the epilogue so dont read it if you wanna give the story a short, its two stories, of over 400k total length.

But it was written way back in the day, and may be the one of the first "star" fanfics out there.

    There is Magics royals.

Everyone, and I mean everyone is paired up.

Everyone has the most perfect happily ever after I have ever seen.

Godlike!Hermione, pussy whipped Harry, redeemed Snape and Malfoy.

    Its a fangirls wet dream.

Even back then when I had never read fanfiction before but ws reading anything over 10k, I thought this was... over the top. Its just so damn nice.

That fucking first sentence in the epilogue... I think my breakfast is coming up right about now.

Could someone recommend a decent Hermione bashing fic that's just not going to blow out on a tangent that she is betraying Harry for more books? I need to wash away the mental filth that's been spawned into existence with that very first paragraph.

Sometimes I wonder what compels these people to write such drivel, but then I realize I really, really don't want to know.

How exactly is a fanfic which clearly states it has a Harry/Hermione pairing going to be bashing Hermione?

You need to read it to see, but to summarize, it's a scathing indictment of the final book in the series, one that turns a spotlight on much of the fridge horror of Hermione's (and everyone else's--none of the principals come off in a positive light) actions.

It's solid writing and a plausible, if thoroughly depressing interpolation between penultimate chapter and epilogue.

And it is not exactly bashing, though it is as closet to bashing as possible while keeping story good and interesting.

Note that it is also fully canon compatible (though NOT in spirit).

It's genuinely amazing how it makes you dislike every single character in it. Except of course Snape, the Malfoys and a handful of other people.

Can anyone recommend good Tom Riddle/Voldemort-centric fic? I'm interested in his Hogwarts years... How exactly lowly almost-muggleborn became the greatest dark lord?

It probably helped that he had a great amount of control and power with wandless magic.

Not to mention when he eventually revealed, mostly to a select few I imagine, his Parseltongue ability.

I don't think it was that easy. Impressive magical power and mostly useless ability to speak with snakes wouldn't be enough to make ancient pureblood families to kneel before him.

I'm not sure if this is some form of sarcasm I'm unfamiliar with, because that's exactly how he had the purebloods bend the knee to him, with both his magical prowess and the use of his ancestry, which all Slytherins respected, if not outright revered.

You say that it was mostly a useless ability, to speak with snakes, yet how can you see it as such, when there was a millennium old Basilisk which could be commanded by Tom Riddle? Again, this is the Slytherin House we're talking about.

Not to mention he could be charismatic when he wanted, every teacher at Hogwarts, Dumbledore aside, practically praised the boy on a daily basis with how apt he was at learning the lessons they taught and other extra material. And as for the students that didn't fall for his persuasive, silver tongue, he could always intimidate them, which I suspect he did quite a bit initially to prove himself better than the rest.

This is exactly what I want to read. I'm just saying that Voldemort wasn't just powerful wizard, he was something more. And I want to know what he did to gain incredible devotion from his followers.

The bottom line is that they still bent the knee later on, when all of that charisma had long since been discarded. Because quite frankly, I never could perceive the canon-Voldemort as charismatic, he was just plain insane.

Anyway, to put this topic back on track, here's a recommendation from me that has nothing to do with what I've talked about in the last few posts.

Title: The Amplitude, Frequency and Resistance of the Soul Bond

    Author: Council

    Rating: T

    Status: In-progress

    Pairings: Harry/Ginny

    Genre: Romance/Humor

Summary: A Love Story that doesn't start with love. A Soul Bond that doesn't start with a kiss. Love is not handed out freely. Love is earned. When Harry and Ginny are Soul Bonded, they discover that love is not initially included, and that it's something that must be fought for.

    Link (FFN):
The Amplitude, Frequency and Resistance of the Soul Bond

I stumbled across this fic just right about when it started and though I had been ambivalent at the time, I had grown to love it. Dumbledore here is probably one of my favorite versions of Dumbledore that I've read about so far in various fics, what with truly being an eccentric, but benevolent, grandfather figure who does silly stuff for the fun of it.

Harry and Ginny are... kids. They don't mature up suddenly, they don't become closer with one another, save in the way that the soul bond forces them to, right away and it takes a lot of effort for them to coexist with the intrusion of the bond in their daily lives, which makes for some rather hilarious situations. Take a peek and you'll know what I mean.

Sounds a lot like Darth Marrs' fic The Bonds of Blood. Here's hoping it's executed with a lot less angst and more likable characters.

Post chapter one edit: they're not.

Well, give it a try, at first it does seem a bit angsty. Nothing like Bonds of Blood, which was way too over the top for me personally.

A story about how Voldemort came to power I recommended a long while ago, haven't read it in some time.

I... I love this fic. It's well written, and in particular the kids act like... well, kids. It has a few twists that I didn't see coming, too, and it moves along at a nice pace. I honestly think it's Library material, and I know what you're reaction to that will be: "A soul bond fic in the Library? Is he crazy or is the story really that good?"

    Probably crazy.

But I still recommend you checking it out. Depending on where it goes in the next couple of chapters, I might put it up in For Review. As it is, 4.5/5.
