And it's for settings like that, that they invented the term 'Grimderp'.

Just remember these words whenever you're done with the latest chapter of Firebird: It gets worse in the next.

That sequel went completely off the deep end and is beyond bad. It's not just that the world is fucked up, it's that everyone, Harry and co. included, justify completely fucked up shit with the "we are wizards, our culture is different" reasoning to the point where when I stopped reading I was really hoping everyone in the story just died a painful death. This chapter is a perfect example. I think that's where I completely gave up on it ever becoming salvageable. Pity. It had a lot of potential.

Amelia claimed that was the case, but it isn't actually true.

Personally, I think the line was crossed sometime in the first story, or was it this one, when Luna told of how the Covens witches just killed her mother in front of her and then burned out her fallopian tubes, and in order to 'heal' those they use a dildo-like thingy, but the witch that was using it did it so brutally, and on purpose, that Luna near bled to her death.

So yeah... no more Marrs stories for me from now on.

Sometimes I am in the mood to read something utterly depressing and disturbing - but there is plenty of better and more useful literature in this field (nonfiction, starting from anything decent about Stalin, Hitler, Pol-Pot etc).

I disagree. Only because Taurec made that a mantra here doesn't make it the truth. It's a cliche which needs to be used in the proper way to work. That's all.

Never the less, bashing Darth Marrs is always a worthy cause.

I am confused about this magical core hate. In my experience it is not even a very good heuristic to identify bad stories.

I think folks bag DM more than he deserves, to be honest. His is competent writing, if not what most people wish to read, and the guy is to be credited for updating religiously every flipping week. His Firebird trilogy isn't the most pleasant of things to read, but it's a fucking dark world after all and he's done well with the premise. Seriously.

Given the parameters of the story he set out to write, I don't see anything all that objectionable, frankly. Yeah, I wish some of the stuff were toned down (the harem stuff is tired and abusing Luna's uterus with a magical dildo so that she could theoretically bear children was over the top), but on balance, for a story still updating, one that I know will finish soon, I find it acceptable.

I gave one of my story starts (what became Unspeakable Things) to DM because, unlike me, at least the guy finishes every damned thing he starts. Think about that for a moment. Few in the fandom can make that claim. Leave reviews if you think he's not going where he should, the guy listens, but don't shit on one of the few competent writers still active in the fandom.

Hard-working and technically competent, yes. But as a whole, the fandom would have been better without him.

True. He is diligent. To me, it is just such a waste. Well, not really a waste, but you get my meaning. He really is a competent writer. He has good ideas, developes them well, can be funny, as well as serious. What he lacks is a second opinion. His stories resemble an old RPG session gone bonkers, because the GM didn't have any notes prepared. He just leads with any wild idea that comes to mind. It is not terrible, but dissapointing.

Though, truth be told he has a fine rolemodel in that regard... George Martin...

EDIT: What is also sad is that he responds to EVERY SINGLE SIGNED REVIEW. And ignores them all. Not that we can blame him, it is FF.net.

I dunno. I took pleasure from Broken Chains. I would say that added something to the fandom. Especially if I'm not the only one who enjoyed it. And there can always be more industrialist/entrepreneur!Harry.

Also, while the world described above is cringe worthy, Broken Chains is nowhere near as dark and I really think you should give it a try.

While it does go on for a bit, I don't see anything wrong with Hermione wishing Harry had made a scandal about the blood quill.

Maybe this guy just rubs you the wrong way? Your hivemind is showing. :p

Except that's not what that quote says. It bashes Harry for being 'passive' and wanks Hermione for being 'active'. Only problem is that 'reactive' =/= 'passive'.

Harry is reactive, yes, but what do you expect? He's a kid who's (rightfully) being kept in the dark. But passive? No, in canon most of the time it's Harry who decides what to do and Hr's role is to find out how to do it (when he doesn't come up with a plan himself.)

Also: blood quills being illegal is fanon (even the name is fanon iirc.)

They might be legal, whatever they might be called, but the purpose for which she used them most certainly was not.

I hated his stories long before he started writing HP fanfiction. There's only so much Star Wars wank I can take.

    Do we actually know that?

Unethical and totally inappropriate to be used as a form of discipline in a school? Yes.

    Illegal? Undetermined.
