That entire conclusion by "Mike Smith" is wrong. They were doing it to protect themselves from "being blown up" like Lily and James. Remember that Dumbledore's letter makes it clear to Petunia exactly why she should take in "the boy". There's no love for Harry or desire to raise him away from the "nonsense". They took him in, and kept him, for only one reason: self preservation.

Also you should remember that the Dursleys value their image beyond everything else. Not keeping Harry and shipping him off to an orphanage would make them look bad in front of the neighbours and so they kept him. As for killing him... I think even Vernon, dumb as he is, knows that would land him in jail. Or get the magical world out for blood, which might be decidedly worse. He'd be put into a 'freakish' prison.

I don't think the Dursleys care for Harry one whit. And thats made very clear in canon again and again.

Smith's point about why don't they kill him is made in the review of the previous chapter, given a bit more insight on his argument. This is shorter than the previous bit I quoted, so I'll do it again:

I may add that if the Muggle authorities wouldn't care, then they could just feed an excuse to the Wizards.

This story is one of the most overrated stories I've ever had the pleasure of coming across. It's right up there next to 'A Second Chance at Life'.

EDIT: Sorry guys, I only said that for a joke, I thought it would be funny. I did send the author a message (It wasn't serious) to get a rile out of her, which worked. I will try and refrain from making more stupid comments.

This thread did save me from checking out the story though but I did skim over it and I was right. I hate stories like this. So thanks again, Narf.

Now that's the sort of thing you don't do when you haven't read the story yourself.

Scratch that. It's the sort of thing you don't do unless the story is THAT bad and you're willing to spend two pages demonstrating it (which implies reading the story, at least partially).

In fact and to be perfectly honest, if I were her, I would rip your diaphragm out of your back and use it as a doormat.

Never thought I'd see the day when Tinn Tam started to go all soft and cuddly. Where's the stiletto heels? I agree, though--reading at least a ways into a story is the admissions price if you wish to bash. Otherwise, and I mean this in the nicest possible way, Scotty, it's an order of magnitude more pathetic than the story you're trying to shred.

On a completely off-topic note, I just turned sigs on again and I'm most appreciative of yours, TT. Kudos to Surrarin for some outstanding work. (Now I gotta go re-read your fic...).

That's what you consider to be 'soft and cuddly' Pers? I'm not sure if I'm impressed or horrified.
