Well, the incantation takes longer, and, as with other unforgivables, you have to have the intent. Far faster to just reducto the shit out of something.

Wait, Taure already argued about it. Nevermind. Whatever Taure says is right.

It is never said in canon that the killing curse requires any more intent than any other spell.

As I said before, if the spells are used non-verbally, thinking the incantations requires practically the same time.

The killing curse is also a guaranteed one hit kill.

BTW, some poster above mentioned Bellatrix and Molly, and that just goes to show my point; Bellatrix knew much more dark magic than Molly and was doubtlessly a much skilled dueler, and look at the lot of good that did her.

While Voldemort and Dumbledore are in a class of their own, the only thing that makes the death eaters so terrible is their willingness to kill people and ruthlessness, and that's why the plot for these books only works by making every good character into a complete moron.

It's not that dark=skill, merely that because of the addictive nature of dark magic, you practice is more often. Harry always obsessively practices his dark magic, which is what makes him 'above average' in skill so quickly, as opposed to the laid back, relaxed pace he learned magic previously. I've always found magic to be a skill like any other, and when casting dark magic you receive some form of pleasure. Regular magic, on the other hand, would get boring if you practiced it all the time, which is why most people don't.

Harry always obsessively practices dark magic because it's borderline retarded to have him go dark, and then be mediocre about it. I believe it's entirely fanon that dark arts make you 'obsessed'.

It's not the dark arts that make Harry work harder. Rather, it's that the mentality required by the author to make Harry break out the status quo and start learning the dark stuff is the same mentality that make him get good at it. What would be the point of Harry defying Dumbledore and the Order, and then not even be particularly good at it?

I'm going to go with Vlad on this one as the Lexicon states nothing about an "addiction" to the Dark Arts.

Though I think this is where some people get the whole "It doesn't matter if it's the Dark Arts, it's the matter of intent so the AK can be good!"

The Lexicon then goes on to state two different things when it comes to Dark Arts. The first being it involves the tampering of free will of another person with the second being this:

Though wouldn't that hold true of all magic since it changes the natural order of things or is magic considered natural?
