I think that is a peculiarity reserved for Yorkshireonians then. Anyway, the technically correct Queens English is to say it with the H, thus leading it to be prefixed by A rather than AN, which was my point.

    This is interesting thanks.

And actually on a side note, I am thinking of coming to a university in the UK, can any of you give me advice on which ones are good, any scholarships that I might be able to apply for or whatever else you think might be helpful. Thanks, if you can do this it would be much appreciated.

Best Universities in the UK (I may miss a few):

    Cambridge
Oxford (you can only apply to either Cambridge OR Oxford, not both)
    Durham
    Bristol
    York
    Edinburgh
    Nottingham
LSE (London School of Economics - it does other stuff as well though)
    Imperial University, London
    Kings University, London
    Southampton
    UEA (University of East Anglia)
Queens University, Belfast (In Northen Ireland)
    University of Manchester

Most universities offer scholaships, based on your exam results or musical ability (there aren't many sporting scholaships). I can't really tell you much about them as each university offers different amounts, and even then the amount is between the student and the university.

However, I believe the largest scholaship currently offered is 10,000 pounds by the University of Manchester, but they only offer it to one person, and only if they recieve full marks in all their exams.

To apply to a UK university, you have to do so through an online system called UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service - http://www.ucas.com/ ).

You have to apply almost a year in advance and write a personal statement - 600 or so words about why the university should choose you. It is solely on this basis that you will be chosen as at this point you will not have your results yet.

You then send this form, through UCAS, to 5 different universities, and they will either accept or reject you. If they accept you, they will most likely give you a conditional offer - if you do not recieve certain results, then your position at their University is forfeit.

The grades needed for each course, or scores using foreign tests, are listed at the Universities website and in their prospectuses (sp?).

After the universities have replied to you, you choose out of the universities that have accepted you two offers, one is your prefered university, and one is an insurance offer requireing lower results - just in case you don't get the results needed for your first choice.

Then, the day you get your results, you either confirm or reject your offer. If you do not recieve the results needed for your insurance, then you have to either ring them up and beg, or go into something called 'clearing', where all the spare spaces at universities are snapped up by those students who did not get the results they needed.

    Hope its been helpful.

Thank you, that was very helpful. Not sure if this makes a difference or not but I was thinking of possibly going into pharmacy, is there a really good school or pharmacy in the UK?

Anyway, thanks for this, it was very helpful

you missed out Glasgow, whihc is the best Uni in Scotland, rated as such by the European Board of Education or what ever its called.

Strathclyde is also an excellent one.

I might be biased, but I think Scottish Uni's are over all better than English ones.:p

Duke, you would probably want to look into UNi courses in Pharmacology (sp) or somethign like that, or possibly something like biochemistry, which is fairly similar.

It should be noted that the application process for Oxbridge (Cambridge and Oxford share an admisions service) is slightly different. Also there are very few universities in Britain that offer Dentistry and Vetinary Science...and also if you are applying to do law or medicine, then the UCAS process is slightly different.

On the subject of Scottish universities, St. Andrews is also very good.

Back to the subject, I don't see any way for American fanfic authors to stamp out Amercianisms and conform to British English. My advice, get a British beta. Americanisms stick out like a thumb so it's not exactly a hard job to spot them.

And I don't read any fics where Harry and co. say "eww" or "That's gross"

    I say 'ewww'...though I don't say 'gross'.

I don't mind it when things are spelt the American way in fics, but I do mind when American culture and slang is used and refered to by the characters.

    Me too.

I got annoyed in Manipulator of Destiny when Harry said to the Dursleys "I'm not making a dime from this" or something like that.

It's something no Brit would say..ever.

C word? I can think of many many C words

ON another note, we don't refer to toilets as restrooms, they are the bathroom or the toilet.

This has been very enlightening...I never would have thought of many of these. But why do Americanisms bother y'all? (I know most of you said it didn't, but I can't be bothered to go back and see who said they did.) If somebody writes using British spelling and vocab, I don't get bothered...I merely dismiss it as a British thing and go on my merry way?

Y'all don't say gross? Strange...

it annoys me when authors writing HP fanfiction don't use English, as opposed to American, because unless they are involving an american, or are setting the thing in america (both things I despise), then the whole damn thing should is being written in a setting of England and Scotland, and thus it shows a lack of care and/or intelligence on the part of the author if they write in american.

Its not like a chinese author would write in chinese in a fanfic they were writing in english, so why should americans get away with writing in their own language?

Really scholarships only go that high? I was watching my brother's graduation and one kid got $100,000 for a scholarship and that wasn't even a full ride. There are also a lot of grants given for college in the U.S.

Somethign that should be noted, in Scotland when you graduate you are required to pay £2000 (nearly $4000) in tax, to make some recompense for the monetary aid the government has given you, in reducing the costs of your years at university.

IN Scotland (im not sure about the rest of Britain) the Government basically pays for the basic costs of attending 4 years of further education. This is basically an Honours course at Uni, or a year at college to get the required grades to make UNi, then an ordinary degree. This amounts to somewhere around £1000 per year, so in essence, the government is relieving us of a £4000 drain, and only asks those who actually graduate to give back half of it.

Im not sure if any of this applies to foriegn students.
