Applies to half the characters in modern anime I think.

Anyway, got up to date in Rokka. It's somewhat entertaining. Its main selling point is its a fantasy that isn't a shoujo harem fic. Which for some reason is pretty rare these days.

Plot/setting seems like your stereotypical fantasy fare, and nothing amazing (yet).

Characters are your usual, one dimensional cardboard cutouts. I'm a bit irritated that they're not even consistent at playing their roles either. Nashetania was confident, nonchalant and generally on top of all the interactions in the first episode, and then suddenly becomes unsure, scared damsel from episode 2. And she looked way better when she visited Adelt in the dungeon with her headphones on than she does in her weirdo bunny ear fetish armour.

I did like the last two episodes and the focus on the conflict within their group, instead of focusing it on the conflict against the Fiends (which would be a bit boring). They could play the whole "Seventh" thing really well. I hope this focus on difficult relationships within the group stay as a feature.

Think someone said the Bunny ears are a sign of Royalty from, like the dudes in Episode One who were fighting in the eagle feathers and shit.

As for Nashetania her attitude flips depending on who she's talking to, she's manipulating everyone.

Confused/Helpless - Goldov & Adlet then switched straight up into hostile warrior going for the kill vs Fremy, a trained assassin when just an episode ago it seemed she could barely use her blade skills effectively.

Am I the only one not enthused by anything this season? There's a lot of shows that cover numerous genres, but none of them standout--they're just decent.

I've given up everything bar Rokka. Everything seemed good but ended up underwhelming

    I'm enjoying Overlord.

Basic premise is your typical full immersion MMO game, except that its been 10 years since the game was launched, and they are going to shut down teh servers. Our protagonist decides to stay on until the servers log him out, and thenhe finds that the world keeps going, he can't log out, all of the NPCs now act like real people, and he is still the superpowerful Max level spellcaster with a giant base that he and his guild built. "Well, I guess conquering the world would be fun."

I want to know what goes through the mind of the author of Gate.

Like, sure, realism is obviously not what he went for. I can deal with the fact that apparently everyone is cool with the JSDF massacring an army of 100,000+ wielding swords. I can deal with the fact that apparently the best way to deal with a castle siege is to get attack helicopters to spam missiles (and have guys throwing grenades out the window), damaging the crap through the castle too.

But what went through his mind when he thought that the way the Japanese government would deal with the first alien visitors from another world would be to:
    - Have them travel by public transport
    - Allow their first forays into the world to be to drop by a local, public restaurant
    - First get revealed to the public in a rather aggressive tribunal against the JSDF's actions
    - Let an unknown alien bring a fucking combat scythe to said tribunal?

Like there's cheesy and unrealistic, and then there's just stupid. It's actually like a really, really bad fanfic. The type without paragraphs or grammar and 300 words per chapter.

...and yet I still look forward to the next episode. >_>

Anyone else enjoying Ushio and Tora? It doesn't take itself too seriously, and usually has some good light humor in each episode that gets a chuckle or two out of me.

Nothing this season I would rave about, I watch Rokka for Rokka, it's the thing this season, Ushio and Tora for a couple chuckles, and Overlord mainly for a guilty pleasure. Virtual world where main protag is so far pwning everyone with a side dash of plenty of wish fulfillment, whats not to love?

Gangsta first episode had me hyping, following were a massive letdown.

Only lasted 2 episodes on Gate. Like Rokka for popularity, only shitter.

The anime is an adaptation of a light novel series. That alone should explain why the story and characters are so bad.
Not just Gate, a lot of anime have been negatively influenced by the growing nationalist and conservative movements in Japanese politics. Even Hayao Miyazaki, who probably has the most clout of any anime director, was concerned about the reaction his bopic The Wind Rises would receive, which caused him to change some aspects of the movie.

If you think Gate is stupid right now, wait until the next episode. It should be covering one of the funniest parts of the manga.

What, you haven't seen Japan, Fuck Yeah before? You've never heard of katanas being forged a trillion times by the greatest smiths on earth? Of them cutting through steel? Of YAMATO DAMASHII?

In general, I'd prefer there wasn't a trend of whatever, Fuck Yeah because it's usually just embarassing. I sincerely doubt Gate'll inspire nationalistic fervor, in any case.

Feels like classic shounen? It is classic shounen. The original manga is from the early 90s.

That voice, though... I could listen to her talk for hours.

Overlord is frustrating, just like every other fucking MMO anime out there. Sword Art Online had its bullshit harem antics and slice of life stuff that overshadowed a compelling premise and weakened the central love story. Log Horizon had its endless tide of moeshit and minutiae that prevented the plot from advancing. Overlord seems to be wanking the protagonist too hard and suffering from a critical lack of serious opposition in the New World.

Yeah Overlord has the RE:Monster kind of problem. It does get slightly better in later books when the author gives up on challenging Ainz and jumps around to other characters, but you can always feel the looming threat of Ainz showing up and wrecking everything.

Too bad the show is going to end before any of that happens.
