Hi guys! Welcome to our discussion thread.

We have decided by popular vote to watch Dennou Coil, so lets start right off with Episode 1 Discussion!

What did you think of episode 1?

Well, the opening theme is fairly good, imo, though the animations are kind of bland. In fact, I'm not the biggest fan of the animation style, at least in regards to characters. I can probably get used to it though, but I'll never be a fan.

As far a the episode, it also seemed kind of bland in whole as well. A lot of questions, not a lot of answers, but I suspect they'll be answered in the next episode.

It's also fairly predictable, so far.

Over all, this isn't looking to ever be a favorite of mine.

    What Proudboar said.

The character design reminds me of chimps:

The premise is hard to stomach and isn't handled that great. 'Everyone' wears some kind of Google glasses and is able to see cyber-pets and other cyber-elements that actually aren't real. In fact the children handle their 'imaginary' pets like objects with mass, pet them, abuse them, pick them up. So far it looks as if these cyber-objects actually occupy space - but at the same time a backpack went right through the arse of the dog.

I actually like the art style. It's a lot different than more recent shows though for sure.

However, it was a relatively uninteresting and slow paced opening. The world seems to be kinda weird though with electronic pets and stuff, but potentially interesting.

Have to say, not particularly impressed by this. It is a bunch of rather annoying kids dicking around with cyber animals with shaky ground-rules. Concur that the whole there/not there seems a bit inconsistent with their behaviour. Art style is also something I am not really very fond off but the last two minutes did get better.

But nothing really that made me think "have to watch the next episode".

I forgot how lighthearted this series was. Coil is essentially an updated take on the same themes and ideas portrayed in Serial Experiments Lain (i.e. the blurring of reality and the internet/wired space). About twice the length though (26 as opposed to 12 episodes), which gives plenty of time to cover all the good plot stuff, and have some entertaining character shenanigans.

And you asshats may hate on Densuke, but that ugly fucker has digital-balls of steel. Not for running into the No Data zone, but for what he does later on. He's the best.

IIRC, more plot shit will be coming up in the next episode and change. Then fun times with laser beams!

Ok, I give you that it is a lighthearted show, with a cute, short story to introduce the setting. Dog goes missing but is rescued later on. And it even features a cliffhanger.

I can't remember how many episodes I actually watched when it came out, but I stopped downloading even before Dattebayo dropped it, because it just couldn't catch and hold my attention. And I can see why. It's not that cute that I scream "d'awww" and the cliffhanger is a rather weak one.

Is Dennou Coil is one of the ones Americans can legally watch?

I'm sure there are a thousand better ways to phrase that sentence, but I can't seem to figure one out.

Art style is fine, I actually like it. The train + background in the start was great. The colors are muted, which seems to be the point in this distorted reality/cyberspace world. Not entirely sure what is going on yet beyond the fact that Glasses are cool. The dog is awesome, anyone ripping on him is a faggot.

Definitely want to see more of this.

Nothing that really hooked me in the first episode, but then again, that's not uncommon in anime - particularly anime like this. So definitely not going to judge it at this stage.

Actually quite like the art style in this case. Colour palette reminds me of Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo and it creates a similar atmosphere - lighthearted, slice of life-y, and lacking moe - that will probably work well with the atmosphere they're trying to create.

OP is pretty good as a song and does a decent job at setting up the mood. ED does nothing in that regard - neither particularly good nor setting up an atmosphere.

Nothing really to comment about the actual plot just yet. We've got our typical introduction to the weird world by diving straight into it.

Huh, I've actually seen the first episode of this, but it was a while ago. I liked it enough that I made a note to finish watching it at some point, or at least give a few more eps a go.

    Good incentive, this thread.

Episode two is more intro plot stuff. Megabaa is awesome (as usual), but not much else. we get more glimpses of That Other Girl and what she's up to, as well as her cyber-pet/slaves, the Mojo's.The next episode will be the end of this intro arc.

I liked the second episode more. The characters introduced are just wacky in a cool way.

I don't know, I just can't get into this. None of the characters or the plot are really catching my interest like I thought it would.

I'll watch one more episode, but if it still can't interest me, I'll probably step out for this anime.

Second episode and still haven't really started being all that interested in the anime.

I still think the atmosphere is interesting, but I'm just not really looking forward to anything happening, nor do I particularly feel any attachment to any of the characters yet. If I was watching this myself, I'd probably have dropped it by now, but I guess the advantage of this thread is to keep at it a bit longer and see where it goes.

The same goes for me. I'll give it one or two more episodes, but if it doesn't get more interesting, I'll drop it.

Pretty much this. Questions aren't getting answered and more questions keep getting raised. Meanwhile, not much has happened plot-wise. I'll give it another episode or two to get interesting.
