I'm game for this, it should give me some motivation for watching shows that have been on my backlog forever or re-watching old favorites.

I'm going to rec Angel Beats because I feel its a fun show to watch with others. It's a thirteen episode series with one OVA and a short alternate epilogue.

Nah. Titan isn't done yet. Also, most people are probably already watching it (or at least have an opinion). IMHO, Titan should get it's own thread (if it doesn't have one already).

ANYWAY, our current pool of nominations are:

    • Toradora
    • Dennou Coil
    • Mawaru Penguindrum
    • Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
    • Madoka Magica
    • Gankutsuou
    • Paranoia Agent
    • Angel Beats

    Nominations end tomorrow.

Hrmm, seems interesting. I guess I'll join in, but I reserve the right to abstain when I just can't get into an anime. For example, I've never been interested in Toradora and as such have never watched more than an episode or two. No particular reason why, just couldn't get into it.

Anyway, if we can nominate some older or more well known anime, does anyone mind if I nominate Baccano!? I realize it's probably another one like Toradora in that most people have already watched it, but even now I still come across some people who haven't seen it yet.

    Edit: Realized I didn't include a description >.>

Anyway, Baccano! is a crazy whiplash kind of story that likes to skip all over the place, but primarily takes place in the 1930's. One plot focuses on the events of the Transcontinental Train, the Flying Pussyfoot. On board is several groups: The Russo Mafia Family's top assassin and his flunkies, a group of cultists, some prohibition era smugglers and the mysterious "Trail Racer." Oh and Isaac and Miria too.

Another plot takes place in New York a year before, involving a seemingly immortal alchemist named Szilard, and the immortality elixir he has developed. However, a series of events involves a young member of the Martillo family named Firo Prochainezo, as well as Isaac and Miria, when Firo meets Szilards assistant, Ennis.

Baccano is basically the anime version of Guy Ritchie's film Snatch.

    That sounds quite interesting.

I actually do have a nomination Black Lagoon, One of my few ventures far from sci-fi, and I think it's pretty amazing. Strong characters, great dynamics, and ridiculously awesome plots. Each Season is 12 episodes and there are two, as well as a 5 episode OVA based on one of the first season episodes and set after the Season 2 finale.

I've never watched http://myanimelist.net/anime/1827/Seirei_no_Moribito]Seirei no Moribito before, but it looks interesting and I've heard goood thing about it.

    Here's the synopsis of it:

At a time when the balance of nature still held the civilizations of mankind in thrall, a single drought could spell the end of a society and doom its inhabitants to piteous deaths. Prince Chagum has been imbued with the power to stave off the drought and bring new life to his empire. However, this is a suspicious time, and he is accused of possession by an evil spirit.

Court advisors only see one solution. Chagum must be put to death by his own father's hand. His salvation is in the form of Balsa, a spear woman and mercenary from Kanbal, the kingdom across the mountains. Her skills are legendary, and although reluctant, she is held by a mysterious vow to save eight souls before she dies. Can she fend off an entire empire and make Chagum her eighth soul?

I'm totally in. I'll be on vacation (w/out internet) until after the deadline for the first round of discussions. So I guess I'll just have to be a bit late to the party.

Will we only have one vote? I'd think due to the number of options and varied interest, two or three might be best.

Maybe a multi-vote poll would be best. Everyone gets, say, five options, Whichever show wins the top spot, we watch first, then go down the list until we are done. Then we have another round of recommendations, rinse, and repeat.

I think we only do the top two and then recycle the rest into a new poll.

Personally I have little interest in certain genres, and I feel the stuff that gets the most votes will fit me best. I think we should go with a strict popularity model, and not give every suggestion equal attention. Yeah my pick might never get watched (though it should, it's fucking awesome) I just don't want to sit through 10 shows that only got one vote.

I also feel that 5 votes is a bit much, otherwise people might just throw votes at stuff because they figure they might as well use left over stuff. 3 or 2 actually forces us to choose what sounds best.

I'd like to join in. No particular nominations from me right now, but I'll think about it for the last day.

Technicalities: How and where shall we discuss the episodes?

In a social group, with one thread per episode?

Shin Sekai Yori? That was brilliant, utterly utterly brilliant at times

Something about it just struck me.

I'm thinking just have a thread specific for that show in the regular forum. Have the title be Anime Watch Club: "Title of the Show", with a strict no spoilers unless under tags rule.

Concur with the 2-3 votes idea. 5 is too much and everyone should have more than one anime that they would want to watch among those that were suggested.

As to the discussion, why the no spoiler rule? It is going to be a thread aimed at a group that watches the episodes together and then discusses it, no? Seems a bit awkward that we would have to tag our discussions. Just a spoiler warning either in the thread name or in the first post should be enough.

For each new ep we should just have a heading from the group leader (Azi) saying

Discussion of Episode 1-[Just Finished] no longer requires spoiler tags.

I have to agree w/ the 2-3 votes per person thing. Makes it easier to show what actually interests people. Personally, I'd prefer 2 votes.

As far as thread setup and spoilers, I got no real opinion.
