Any way to get some more space through use of a program?

I've basically uninstalled everything non essential in my laptop that I can (some won't let me uninstall) and I'm still low on memory. Are there any programs I could get to take away any of the crap I don't need? Because I seem to be doing fuck all to help clean it up.

Are we talking memory like hard drive space, or memory like RAM?

Have you got some ancient lappy with a single-digit gigabyte hard drive you're trying to squeeze everything into, or are you just bewildered that umpteen gigs have disappeared into the ether? You really should be a bit more descriptive here.

So what's the problem? Windows should only take up five gigs or so (assuming XP). What else do you need on it that's taking up so much room?

Back up what you want to keep, wipe the drive.

    Reinstall.

Christ, getting information from you is like pulling fucking teeth. How much of said hard drive is being used? What's the size of your Windows folder?

I think you're probably holding onto crap data in your profile. The following locations may contain huge chunks of data you can probably delete:

    C:\Temp

    C:\Windows\Temp

    C:\Documents and Settings\[loginname]\Local Settings\Temp

Deleting the contents in these locations is likely to clear up the problem, though you may lose recent downloads that you haven't manually stored in a specific location.

Nifty trick: you can highlight multiple files/folders in an Explorer view and hit Alt-Enter to show cumulative properties including total file space used.

Sorry, this is an old laptop I never really used :S

And its got 170 mb out of 32 gig and there's another drive but I can't seem to save things to that for some reason.

Probably a recovery partition setup by the OEM. Seeing as you don't seem to be using it you're probably safe deleting it and extending your main NTFS partition to fill the rest of the space.

Yeah Oz I totally understood that
But I appreciate the gesture although I managed to delete stuff through word's advice and just purusing files of old shite I thought I had deleted but hadn't.

I now have 4 gigs left and that'll do for now.

    Thanks everyone. :)

You don't know what takes away the space? You don't even know what's installed? You never really used it? This sounds to me like you need to format the HDD, reinstall the Windows of your choice, and enjoy your 30GB of free space.

If you haven't needed the shit on it for so long that you forgot what it fucking is, you won't ever. Trust me.

Have you tried Disc Defragmenting? That helped me quite a bit with my old laptop.
