So I'm sitting here watching all three LOTR movies when the following occurs to me; has anyone ever noticed that the costumes from the HP movies are nearly identical to those hobbits and elves wear in LOTR? Except for the cloak clasp and trouser length the starting hobbit costume is a Hogwarts uniform, the elves' robes as they leave for the grey havens are pretty close to formal robes worn to the yule ball.

When costume directors and set designers start making these things, do they just go to "Cloaks and Robes 'R Us" to sort through a set who's only real differences are color and cuffs?

The only explanation i could think of is that both of the stories, are loosely based on the same people. Hobbits are very English in nature, which was the intention of Tolkien, and well, cloaks are a very Victorianish thing, and it's a real easy way of making it the same but different for harry potter.

Hurrah for Costume design 101, I knew it would be useful for something!

Nope, can't say I did... Then again I stopped watching the HP movies, I can't stand the sheer amount of variance from the good half of the book series.

Yeah, I noticed that long ago also with other films, too. As Darkmakr wrote - that's the clothing way too much producers think look "outfashioned" enough to create a fantasy-film atmosphere.

    EDIT:

I think, it's fitting for LotR, but it's definitely not the way I picture JKR's world. The hints she gave point towards awkward colourful clothing, i.e. Fudge's lime green bowler had, McGonagall's emerald green robes, etc. And otherwise nobody would care that Snape's always wearing black.

LoTR movies were not that great tbh, I liked the HP ones better.

And no, I never noticed that. Yes, it's very pointless>_<
