Let's see now. A Batman movie, which tend to be filmed with a lot of dark scenes, and supposedly the film executives want Nolan to film in 3D?

3D makes movies look awful in some ways - it kills the brightness, because the 3D projectors can only deliver a fraction of the light to your eyes that regular projectors do. To compensate the movies have to be adjusted for a more limited range of brightness. Translation: Batman will look like a greyish soggy mess in 3D.

Nolan has the right idea when it comes to premium priced, enhanced viewing: IMAX is way better than 3D, and I'd prefer to see more of the former than the latter. Of course, there's that whole issue with the new IMAX digital screens being puny compared to the originals, but that's a rant for another day...

This 3D jerkoff of the past couple years really grinds my gears. It really brings nothing to the table except visually. I watch movies to be entertained and engaged, not to see things pop out at me and have 'crystal clear 110% hi-def' in my face. Movies are supposed to help me escape from reality, not throw it in my face twice as large and three times as ugly.

As far as what I'd like to see in Batman 3, Talia al Ghul might be interesting. The Dark Knight ended with Batman being hunted by the authorities to cover for Harvey Dent.

In keeping with the hunted man theme, as Bruce did let Ra's al Ghul die in Batman Begins, a revenge theme with a reconstituted League of Assassins let by Talia to GET BATMAN might be fun, ratchet the tension up to 11.

    Thoughts?

This is really only as issue when the movies are converted to 3D. Shit like The Last Airbender happens when a movie is filmed in 2D, and is converted to 3D. Avatar didn't look like a "Greyish, soggy mess" though.

Cate "I look like a man with severe downs" Blanchett? Fuck no.

I'd shit my pants if Clayface was introduced. It'd be awesome as all get out, but I'm not sure he'd be main villain status.

Mr. Zsasz could be in there.

A Bane done right would be too awesome for words. Not some steroid induced tard that follows orders from Uma Thurman.

I'm thinking it'd be some villains that are really known to the viewer, perhaps through the older movies; the Riddler, a Bane done right (the 'BREAK YOU' scene, anyone?), or a Catwoman would be really nice. But, Nolan is taking it with realism in this one, after all what we've seen in his Batman movies is existing technology, so I wouldn't know what to think about villains like Bane or Clayface. Even so, one can dream.

And speaking of Dreams, Inception's producers were set on making it 3D, but Nolan told them 'thanks but no thanks, it'll take the viewer's attention go away' and left it at that. Imagine what it would do to the dark and gritty world of Batman, huh?

In any case, here's to another great revamp of the goddamn Batman.

Zsasz did get a minor appearance in Batman Begins, so that might count for something. He's not really a villain who could probably support a movie on his own though; he really doesn't have much going for him as a character beyond being a sadistic psychopath. I don't think he could really carry a movie the way Joker or Ra's and Scarecrow did, but you could certainly do something like have Batman take him down in the opening sequence (because every Batman movie has to have an early scene of Batman beating people up).

I think Avatar benefited from being pretty vibrantly colorful, even when it was showing a 'dark' scene. And even then it was still brightness-deficient, through no fault of the people behind the movie. It's mainly a projection technology issue. I suspect those problems will be fixed at some point, though that'll still leave some of the existing 3D installations out of luck for a while.

Batman worries me because any dark scenes in that movie will probably be a bit 'flatter' in terms of color depth. Still, Nolan is big on making sure that the presentation is top-shelf; that's probably why he's so enamored with IMAX. If anyone can make a decent-looking 3D movie with Batman-style scenes, it's him.

I actually really like 3D. I don't think it's a gimmick. I went to see Avatar both in 2D and 3D and after seeing it in 3D, the 2D version just looked a bit lame. 3D is more than just stuff popping out the screen at you: it gives a depth to the screen that you really do miss when you return to 2D.

Fixed that for you. Yes, Avatar was stunning visually and technically, but so far it's really the exception.

I like Damien. He's an arrogant bastard and his interactions with Dick are just pure gold - "So we're agreed. It's Robin and Batman from now on."

I'm not really knowledgeable on that aspect, but why is the prospect of a movie going 3D bad? I thought movies were better in 3D? More realistic and all?

    1. It really depends on whether or not they shoot the movie for 3D or not. The post-production method of making a movie 3D renders significantly less quality than actually filming the movie with the 3D method because it darkens the image a lot, this is especially bad in movies that already use a lot of dark imagery, i.e. Batman. It's also significantly cheaper.

    2. For most movies, it's really just a money making gimmick. 3D tickets cost more. Avatar was hugely successful with it, so now everyone wants in on the pie.

    3. 3D movies can give you vergence-accommodation conflict, which can cause migraines and eyestrain.

And a lot of the time when a movie's made with 3d in mind, they go far out of their way for the relevant angles - guns pointed at the camera, objects flying at the camera, people looming in the general direction of the camera. It just feels cheap.
