That being said, what else could it be called? The Dark Knight was a beautiful title. How do you follow up? Batman has a couple of other nicknames, but they don't work: 'The Caped Crusader?' Just this side of goofy. 'World's Greatest Detective?' Just the other side of stupid.

Personally, I was hoping for 'The Goddamn Batman' but that would be a marketing nightmare.

As to who the villian will be... well, with the list he's given us, the lack of repeats and the admonition that it's a 'realistic take' on Batman, we rule out Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Mr. Freeze, Two-Face, Bane, Scarecrow, Clayface, Poinson Ivy, Solomon Grundy and Ras a'Ghul.

So who's left? Catwoman, obviously. Mr. Zsasz is a maybe. Hush? Croc?

I'm unsure, but I trust Nolan.

Haven't seen the comments about repeats being ruled out, but if that's the case then Mr. Zsasz is out, having cropped up in Begins (albeit unnamed on screen). Black Mask has potential, especially given the focus on the mob in Gotham, as does Hush, although that's possibly a little much to work into a film, even if you strip out the rest of the villains in his plan. I think Riddler could be done realistically, and so could Poison Ivy - make her an eco-terrorist who makes poisons, ala the animated series (and probably at least some of the comic continuity), rather than someone who can control plants, and you're laughing.

This article makes for interesting reading, I think. I haven't read the comic in question, but it would seem to follow on nicely from where The Dark Knight left off.

Does anyone else hope that Nightwing shows up somewhere, Robin would be kind of lame so I'm thinking if they want to go that route Nightwing would be a good one.

    While this
is true, that aside Nightwing won't happen without at least one film with Robin in. Altering the character that dramatically would result in epic amounts of fan rage - it would be more trouble than it's worth.

That said, I doubt Robin will show up anyway.

    Catwoman yay !

Though I'm not a big fan of Hathaway, I was afraid Catwoman wouldn't get the Nolan treatment and would remain in people's memory as the Halle Berry massacre interpretation.

Bane is unknown to me, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I don't find her particularly appealing for the role, especially one as blatantly sexual as Catwoman's.

Hathaways long been typecasted as that goody two shoes hapless girl fighting for good.

I read somewhere that Eva Green was considered. Damn that would have been beyond awesome.

    ...??

Both Green and Hathaway are too skinny for Catwoman. Michelle Pfeiffer was sexy enough, but still not as curvy and blatantly, overtly sexual as Catwoman ought to be. Although her transformation in the otherwise awful Batman movie she was in went a long way toward overcoming that. <-- hope my meaning is coming through.

I can't think right now exactly who'd make a more explicit Catwoman, although someone like Shakira comes to mind. No idea if she can act or not.

Eva Mendes or a younger (?) Monica Bellucci just ooze sex appeal. Olivia Munn could pull it off (I think) but I haven't seen much more than pictures and a few clips of her. Salma Hayek could probably do it too but it's hard to take her seriously for some reason after that shit with Banderas.

Marion Cotillard? They could go the batshit insane route and use Angelina Jolie, but she'd overshadow the rest of the cast with the off-screen drama.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'd rather have a more womanly Catwoman than Eva Green or especially Hathaway are likely to provide. I'm no doubt leaving out a ton of worthy substitutes but oh well.

I'd actually prefer Hathaway's or Green's slimmer body type to some swinsuit model or something. Seems more "catty." And it would make her more unassuming in her alter-ego role, I think.

But then, I seem to be in the minority when I consider Maggie Gyllenhaal to be attractive, so...

@Portus : You make a point in terms of curves, but remember that Catwoman is also supposed to be a pretty badass hand-to-hand fighter, which means they need someone who could pass as a martial artist.
Now I do agree than both Hathaway and Green are far from that, but I think it'd be more credible to see a skinny girl tone up than a curvy girl starve.

And the other point, is the attitude. Cotillard could never pull that off (and the accent would be plain awful, too), and Mendes or Hayek would certainly lack subtelty. This isn't Sin City.

... That said, Shakire would be best Catwoman, but AFAIK, she can't act.

Eva Green wasn't ever actually being considered for the role, it was a 'mistaken rumour' that was released then debunked the next/same day.

That said, I think it's a goddamn shame. I think she is perfect for the role, she drips sex appeal and has a far more of a Begins/Knight aesthetic than Hathaway, who is going to spend the whole film looking like she got lost on her way to the bathroom.

    What? What?

This could have been the least fail thing announced so far bar Hardy:

Bane will break Batman, then Nolan will call it quits with the franchise. I'm pretty stoked for the movie to come out.

Look at the name, it should be obvious.
A huge no to Robin or Nightwing.

A yes to Eva Green possibly playing Talia Al Ghul

Oh and I'm just curious as to what Nolan's interpretation of Bane will be. From what I remember Talia al Ghul was rumored to be in the movie. She could bring in Bane who might have been some sort of prodigy in the League of Shadows, and have him break Batman's back as he did in the comics.....By the end of the film, Batman might rise again and you can have the whole The Dark Knight Rises title make sense.

Bane's going to be a hard one to do. The first version of him he looked stupid, like a rabid dog. In the comic books the guy was smart, planning, and pretty damned ruthless. How do you show how strong the guy is, and making him even stronger via his serum, without getting some huge dude, like Lou Ferrigno in the old Hulk era huge, to play him?

Catwoman I don't like the casting for, Anne has her moments when she's hot sure, but she doesn't leak that pure sex vibe Catwoman is supposed to.

I can maybe see Bane being an addict to the serum, trying to fight his addiction and such. Would be an interesting real-world twist to it, but the super-strength is going to be a hard one to sell, considering the world of this Batman is sans super-powers. Maybe the serum would inhibit his ability to feel pain?

On the Hathoway note. She's hot, and I think has some very nice curves.

    and...

    http://www.veidt.com/?p=1705

Link has some nice pictures of her.

They look sexy, and she looks slightly like how catwoman might in the posted pic, but...I don't know. I'm with everyone else, she looks good, but there is something missing in how I see catwoman. Some sensuousness that is lacking.

Shakira definitely has it. Not Hathoway, though. Hopefully, I will be pleasantly surprised when I see the movie.
