    Hey,

I was just wondering if DLP was going to have the Best Category awards that we had last year.

    Sincerely,
    Shezza88

In that thing you call a closet. Better watch out,
I was wondering about that too. They were held around this time last year, at least that's what it looks like from the thread dates.

A lot of very good stories have come out this year, so I think it would be worth holding the awards

Someone probably needs to volunter to run them like that contest Merrill tried to start up in September.

It may just be me but there also seems to be a lot less good fic's around now than there was this time last year. Several have been finished and other on "Hiatus" such as a Second Chance at life by Miranda Flairgold (finished and winner last year) and The Scorpion by Vorlon666 (Not updated in over 6 months and second place) they were the top two for Indy and they are both now not in the running since I think it's only WIP's that are entered. I can only think of 3 or 4 stories that may fit the bill to be entered this year.

The first that spring to me mind are Jbern's Bungle of the Jungle or The Coming Darkness and Nonjon's Dimension Hopping for Beginners and Browncoat, Green eyes. I could see all of them entering quite easily.
I agree that there are less good stories these days, but there still are some diamonds out there.

Actually.. a few weeks ago we discussed it on IRC, and we never decided if we would or wouldn't have them, most agreed that it should be an annual thing, but no one wanted to go through EVERY story to find good entries, I suppose if you guy's want to have it you'll have to nominate stories, and then yeah, the rest of the process will follow.

It looks like everyone is just a bit to lazy to sort it all out. After all you are going to have to filter through a lot of crap to find good entries. Someone that springs to mind is IP82, he seems to read a LOT of stories from the amount of stuff he posts in For review but not all of it is to people tastes as you'll see by paying a visit to the trash bin.

The easiest way would for several people to throw up as many decent fins as they can for each type of fic and then we vote on the winner,

A Second Chance at Life is finished and its sequel is going but Its not quiet as good in my oppinion. But for Indy To Fight the Coming Darkness. For Azkaban I vote Shezza's fic.

I say we have the awards.

I think we should get a mod to create another topic for them. In the topic, we have each different categories with differnet threads, we're you can make nominations. Then somebody makes a poll thread where you vote for your preferred story after all of the nominations had been put in.

We actually talked about them in quite a bit of detail about 2 months back (now I think about it I think it was far more than 2 months); in general the most popular thought was that we should have the awards, but that there should be different categories to last year.

I can't remember them all, but I think they were something like this:

    Best Comedy
Best Dark Story (dark as in noir, not necessarily dark!harry)
    Best Original Character
    Best Leading Character
    Best Supporting Cast
    Most Professional Style
    Most Originality
    Best Romance
Best Alternative Storyline (i.e. the Alternates and Time travel Sections)
    Best Author
    Best New Author
    Best One-shot
    Best Story 2006

Yeah...so just a few of them.

Well that has 9 areas that you could win in which seems high with the low number of good fics out there but one fic could probably win several areas. Such as best of their catagory and then best hero/villan.

Uhh, how many chapters does a story need for it to be submitted into nomination category? They don't have to be completed right?

If not, then Thal's story & Taliath's stories come to my mind for nominations. Along with many others...

Lower number of categories; limit them to a few DLP-friendly genres (Independent!Harry, Dark!Harry, AU) and a few regular ones (in-canon, romance). Maybe a few special awards too - best story ever, most annoying/disappointing etc...

The real question is should the selection be limited to stories that had been started within the last year, or should we also include those that had merely been updated? Maybe some combination is the best choice - either started within the last 12 months, or had 50K(+/-) words published during that period. How about that?

I like the idea of the best hero and bad guy idea. You may not have the best over all story or one that is so out their that it doesn't appeal to many people but you may still have an extreamly well written person in it. A few more of these catagories could be added to up the number of awards with out having to lower the standards to exept low quality fics just to fill the space. It cold be like the oscars were one fic can win several awards.

I'm all for doing the awards again. They were what brought me to this site when I got an e-mail stating I'd been nominated, so I started trolling to win me some votes.

That and the section of the forum calls it
That word annual seems to indicate we should.

As for how to do it differently or what the rules are, I'll defer to letting other people decide that stuff. I like some of the other sorts of 'categories'.

the 50k thing that IP mentioned: How would you track that? I mean . . . what if a work was 51k words but the 50k were from two years ago, and 1k was from this year? You'd have to contact the authors to figure out how many words had been released this year, unless you had saved all of your author alerts. Which I do, so I suppose it's kind of a moot point. However, short of just copy and pasting all of the words from one of their documents into yours, and having word/wordperfect/openoffice/neooffice do a word count, do you have any suggestions?
