All fanfiction, not just Potter, right?

So, in no real particular order:

Kahoru Hoshino from Puella Magi Homura Magica by Lestaki [Puella Magi Madoka Magica]
really love her, she is like the daughter of Tattletale and Taylor, with the personality of the former and the drive, methods and goals of the latter. She is just an amazing character.

Alexandra Quick from the Alexandra Quick series by Inverarity [Harry Potter]
Guess there is not much need to explain this one. Great character, certainly good enough to stand on her own.

Meciel and Amanda Carpenter from the Denarian series by Shezza [Harry Potter]
technically, only Meciel is an OC but seeing that Amanda is a blank slate in canon, should be okay. Meciel's inhumanity and growing bond to Harry is great to read and Amanda is just very likeable.

Shikako Nara from Dreaming of Sunshine by Silver Queen [Naruto]
To be honest, it's more of Shikako's way of perceiving this better thought out version of the Naruto world that makes this all more appealing but there is also strength in the character alone. Quite like her drive and the way she perceives problems and how she juggles this responsibility that she feels has to shoulder.

Aiko Uzumaki from Vapors by ElectraSev5n [Naruto]
Aiko is funny, entertaining and a bit insane. Also, really love her tendency to troll others and the more egocentric goals she has.

Violet Parkinson from Hogwarts Houses Divided by Inverarity [Harry Potter]
It has been some time since I last read this but I still remember that she was very well written, as a child of two people who were on the wrong, losing side of a war, who struggles with that and her place in the school. I just wish she had a bigger role in the conclusion of the story.

(truth to be told, most of Inverarity's characters, seeing as he almost exclusively deals with OC's and has gotten really good at writing them, so, also count in Ophelia, Anna and so on)

Tek from the Ascension trilogy by Cbyerwraith9 [Teen Titans]
I have a lot of feelings for Tek, who has become a Teen Titan in my eyes, as much as everyone else in that group. I just love her backstory, her journey to discover who she is, her powers, her personality, her interactions with her team, how she defines herself with that team, how she develops. There is a lot going on with Tek. Can't wait for more updates on the third story.

That said, Ryo is also a great character, love him as well. Especially his friendship with Tek.

LittlePip from Fallout Equestria by Kkat [My Little Pony : Friendship is Magic + Fallout]
It has been some time since I last read this, a few years at least, so, I don't really remember her all that clearly, or the other characters. I just know that I really loved her and her journey and how she grew more and more ruthless over time, and how she dealt with various things like killing, addiction and so on.

Anko from Erosion by magnusrae [Avatar the Last Airbender]
also a character that I honestly don't remember all that well. Might even be in the guilty pleasure category

Bronwyn Couseland from Victory at Ostagar by Arsinoe de Blassenville [Dragon Age]
Bronwyn, I love a lot. She is a bit naive regarding some things at the beginning, but she does behave like a competent noble and eventual queen should. She builds her own army with elite fighters utterly loyal to her, she has her eyes on the big picture, yet knows how to play the game, she is proud, arrogant and a good planner. Overall, I like her journey, as a noble woman who clings to her status and doesn't forsake it, never really buying all that much into the whole Grey Warden thing. Her ascension to queen of Ferelden was a joy to read and I loved seeing her conquer.

Tsukune Aono and Keito from He Who Fights Monsters by hawker-748 [Rosario + Vampire]
Technically, neither of them are OCs, but as far as I know, they are written drastically different from their canon representations, so much so, that they might as well be OC's. Then again, haven't read the source material, but the story is just that damn good. Tsukune living in fear of being revealed as a human in a monster school, where that revelation would mean his death is really intense, as is his will to live and how he ensures that he stays alive, becoming gradually more and more ruthless and brutal. How he clings to his humanity and how the story treats that as something savage and monstrous is just beautiful and I really love the romance to Keito, as messed up as it is. She herself is a rather satisfying character, inhumane and cruel, yet oddly cute and endearing.

Isra from Bitter Leaves and Blossoms Bright by callalili [Assassin's Creed]
Her journey from a young girl bought by the Assassin's then trained by them until she rises in a position of authority is an enjoyable read, especially since it doesn't shy away from the sexist and problematic notions of the culture and time period she lives in, and how she manages to succeed despite them.

Min and Bree from The Dreaming by Asynca [Tomb Raider]
Well, Asynca has written a book about them, and has recently started the second one, so, you could say that they were successfully pulled off. The Dreaming is the sequel to The Camera Loves You.

Would Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki from the Girl From Whirlpool by SilverShine count? [Naruto]
de facto canon for me. Minato's portrayal as an awkward genius who slowly but surely disconnects from his life and friends via a life through war is written really well, but the connection to Kushina, who herself is a great character, who treats Minato as if he were just a giant dork is a pleasure to read. The friendship and eventual love is written greatly.

Maybe a bit of a guilty pleasure, but I am quite fond of

Kitty Earl from Behind Blue Eyes by Paffy [Harry Potter]
I honestly really enjoyed the input of a muggle girl, with her "normal" problems in all these magical issues, and how she connected to Harry and later on, in Hogwarts clashed with the magical culture there. With the wizards disliking her for her punk/trashy appearance alone plus her being a muggle, and with the threat of memory wiping hanging over her head, really liked reading about her. Granted, the story is not the best thing ever, but still, I quite liked it.

Also, I admit, I don't remember the characters all that well, but

New Blood by JFalcon had a lot of OC's that were pretty decent. [Naruto]

Princess Kira Wrynn from The Legend of Uzumaki Naruto: A Beginning by General Grievous
also a bit of a guilty pleasure, and I admit, she is a bit of a generic fantasy princess, but I still quite liked her and her rogue handmaiden bodyguard.

Shikako Nara from Dreaming of Sunshine, certainly. Who comes even close?

@Nemrut - Not disputing that those are good characters (except Victory at Ostagar's Bronwyn, she sucks like an industrial vacuum cleaner, but good as Tsukune or Kushina are as characters, they're aren't OCs, are they? Merely fleshed out canon characters with their personalities brought in certain, unique and very interesting directions.

Fair point to Tsukune, but seeing that Rosario and Vampire seems to be a shitty harem rom com, and he is everything but a harem rom com protag, I would say he is OC enough to count as such. Similarly, Minato and Kushina, at the point at which the story was written, were mostly non-entities, where they hadn't reappeared as zombies and ghosts. So, yeah, maybe not OCs as a whole, but still, written differently enough that the authors made them their own, I'd say.

Also, them's fighting words about Bronwyn, son =P

Find myself seconding most of the characters who have already been mentioned (in no particular order). These are characters who stood out to me:

Alexandra Quick from the AQ series (HP)
Kahoru Hoshino from Puella Magi Homura Magica (PMMM)
    Uzumaki Aiko from Vapors (Naruto)
    Amaris from Denarian Series (HP)
Desdemona Malfoy from In Bad Faith (HP)
Meriwether Archibald from Postnuptial Disagreements (FSN/Sekirei)
Abraham Thorn from AQ series (HP)
    Calypso Rosier from BWL (HP)

If we're including characters who are technically canon but are basically blank slates who only ever got the briefest mention:
Amanda Carpenter from Denarian series (HP)
Miltiades Malachite from Four Deadly Secrets(RWBY)
Günter Schnee from The Gentle Art of Making Enemies (RWBY)

Shikako Nara was...alright. As immersive as that fic was (at least, for the first half of it), she was nothing special as a character in my opinion. It was the fic which stood out.

Sure there's more I'll think of later.

Lots of mentions of Calypso from HPBWL, but I feel Krum deserves a mention as well, as he is, for all practical purposes, an OC. Santi takes "prodigy at Quidditch, good at magic" from the books and creates a complete and well written character.

Somehow this thread prompted me to go on a reading binge of Harry Potter fanfiction which I've had little interest in for more than a year. The Denarian Trilogy, Awaken Sleeper, The Lie I've Lived, Forests of Valbonë, Lessons, HP and The Boy Who Lived, By The Divining Light, Wastelands of Time...

    Good times.

Most of my favourite original characters have already had mention: Amaris, Meciel, Adele Polkiss, Calypso Rosier, Ophilia Karait, Nathane Cassane. Though it's been quite some time since I read Hogwarts House Divided or Renegage Cause.

There's a few blank slate canon characters coming to mind though.

Amanda Carpenter from the Denarian Trilogy as has been mentioned.

Aurora from Awaken Sleeper whose characterisation went uphill once we got past the events of Summer Knight, I think.

Sternley from Forests of Valbonë, especially with the banter he had going with Harry.

Angelina Johnson from Lessons who is more or less how I always imagine her character now.

Victor Krum from Harry Potter and the Boy Who Lived.

Su Li from Point Game/Silence Game.

I think Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness did a good job in fleshing out many characters IIRC but it's been a long time since I read that too.

If we're including canonical characters that are written with a novel interpretation then the Sorting Hat from The Lie I've Lived is definitely one of my favorites.

Abelard and Jasmine from The Letters of Summer are both very well done.

It was kind of cool to see Dumbledore have a contemporary in Abelard, and the exploration of 'seer' abilities was a nice change. It's not something I've seen before.

Jasmine, and the whole thing with the Shiva Institute, was interesting as well.

The Snow Dragons deserve a mention here as well. There was a surprising amount of thought put into their society and backstory.

I haven't read any HP fic in a while. I think my fave OC (well, pretty much, since he was a minor character in a dlc that not many people played) is Balak from the A:TLA/Mass Effect crossover Avatar of Victory.

A batarian priest who found out that his people's beliefs had been twisted for centuries, who attempted to protect the soldiers under his command when they were from the lowest caste of Batarian society, and who manages to get pretty much everyone he talks to reexamine their deeply held beliefs? Hell yeah he's my favorite. I mean, he manages to become friends with the Shepard in that fic, who has the Colonist background (batarian slavers attacked the colony, killed her entire family) and the Butcher of Torfan service history. (this shep basically only joined the military to kill batarians, and only found out she was the Avatar when she snapped on Torfan and wiped out pretty much everyone, batarian and human alike.)

Also, he ends up having a couple of philosophical/teleological debates with Legion, which is always interesting.

The OCs in the Denarian Trilogy (Amaris, Meciel and let's be honest Amanda is essentially an OC) and those in Circular Reasoning get my shout out(s). Bit boring to pick such well known works but they are well known for a reason.

I've been rereading the Sacrifices Arc over the last couple of weeks, and there's a fair few OC's in that. Indiginia Yaxley's complicated dance around honour, Evan Rosier and his insanity (and obsession with poetry), Narcissa Malfoy's* dancing...Rosier in particular made such an impression on me that it overwrote canon entirely; I was three stories into my own fanfic before I realised that quite apart from all the other AU elements to it, having Rosier alive and kicking was another change from canon, which came about entirely from reading Sacrifices.

*I know Narcissa isn't an OC - technically I suppose Rosier isn't either, although that's more debateable - but pretty much every aspect of her character beyond anti-Muggle prejudice and love for her family is original, so I'm going to count her. This goes for a lot of the canon characters, but most of the others are too develope in canon.
