I think the big difference between the two would be how well known nuclear weapons are VS the fiendfyre curse.

Seeing as how dark magic is the kind of thing that's just not spoken of, in a respectable household at least.

Well, WWI was only initiated by this event - it is not like millions of people and entire countries cared about this.

I will assume that there was no equivalent of magical side, as there was no heap of treaties, politics and "lets start a quick war" politicians that caused this nightmare.

But it certainly had some consequences.

At least some of them noticed that Muggles may cause destruction on a massive scale (trench warfare alone caused areas of complete desolation stretching across entire countries). New weapons appeared - for example strategic bomber and poison gas may be the first weapons in history superior to battle magic in at least some aspects. It is certain that significant number of magicals was killed.

All of this probably caused increased fear what would happen after collapse of the Statute, probably leading to increased oversight of ICW over obliviators. Note that it is the only part of UK magical government that is competent and effective - maybe there are directly part of ICW, not responding to local governments?

All of above certainly happened after discovery of nuclear weapons - nobody would accept something like "Muggle UK nuked major magical settlements over the world because Fudge administration was group of idiots and they failed to properly obliviate somebody".

So tensions between ICW enforcing statute and locals are another potential point of conflict ("but nobody will notice this little compulsion charm and it earns us 1/3 of our budget").

Certainly not in league with Hitler, like mighty wizard would work with filthy Muggle. This would be servant/slave/worshipper relationship.

    ======

Syria, Sudan, Poland, North Korea and other countries with tragic history may have another interesting consequence of Statute of Secrecy. It is likely that country is quite powerful on the magical side but blocked from interfering on the non-magical side. Magical that care what happens on Muggle side (some form of patriotism, maybe lower amount of bigotry than in UK and most likely - living in fucked up country is worse than in relatively normal one) may be deeply unhappy with fact that it is illegal to do anything. At least some of Muggleborn lost families in result of war/famine/genocide and nobody wants necromancers allowed even potential access to thousands or million of bodies/spirits of people murdered in a horrific way.

It is potential for some people breaking in secrecy the Statute, maybe with some interesting motivation. Another point of conflict.

    ---------- Post automerged at 22:41 ---------- Previous post was at 22:39 ----------

Fiendfyre seems to not be able to cause destruction comparable with nukes - nobody is using or even mentioning possibility of destruction on a large scale. But maybe Hogwarts have some protection against magical attacks and dampening is included or Voldemort was not interested in destruction of this place. And attacking Burrow etc was not worthy to use his hidden power.

I would assume that nobody developed magic able to cause nuke-type destruction (see http://www.nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/?lat=51.499167&lng=-0.12472200000001976&zm=8&kt=50000 ).

Main problem is - why magicals allowed Muggles to keep nuclear weapons? I see three possibilities: they failed to notice problem, action like this would cause retaliation or it is not a problem.

Retaliation - but who would do this? Muggle administration with knowledge of magic that avoided obliviation makes little to no sense (but it is possible that there is hidden structure that would be able to trigger retaliation, therefore there is a MAD situation). But maybe relevant magical countries see it at their own weapons. After all they may at any moment use mind control or produce "evidence" using magic and target somebody with A Very Big Boom.

Not a problem - maybe magicals are able to ward against any attack with muggle weapons up to and including nuclear weapons?

In 1492 the Crown of Castile begins the conquest and colonisation of the Americas, overthrowing the powerful local empires and establishing European-style governments in their place. In 1692 the wizarding world disappears after three years of preparation and European-style ministries are established in Latin America under Spanish authority, excluding the Portuguese ruled Brazilian Ministry.

Eventually these ministries gain independence from Spain – some after wars of independence and others after a weakened Spain relinquishes its empire. Territorially they only have a passing resemblance to Muggle nations – Central America is united under a single Ministry of Magic for example – and they are generally more powerful than their Muggle counterparts, having none of their historic instability.

Despite their European-style governments and education systems the Ministries of Latin America are viewed as second-class powers within Europe. The upheaval of World War Two allowed them to begin bucking the status quo when the European Ministries, weakened by the attrition of warfare, needed their manpower to fight Grindelwald’s Dark Army. After the war Dumbledore’s emergence onto the world stage stopped them from threatening the European Ministries into granting them greater recognition, instead he convinced/threatened them into returning to using the political methods that had failed them for the last three centuries.

With Dumbledore’s death the Mexican, Central American, Brazilian and South American Ministries seize their chance to better their world position as Europe is once again engulfed by a firestorm. Old issues arise as the Mexican Ministry faces off against the United States Ministry (which has a relatively weak central government and very independent states) over ownership of Texas, New Mexico etc.

Dumbledore’s style of leadership meant that issues often weren’t fully resolved, just left to simmer beneath the surface. Without him around many nations are intent on settling scores with each other, leading to the very real possibility that of wizarding world war fought between half a dozen different factions.

On the topic of wizarding nations I don’t think Xandrel is right in saying that they should be based on nations that existed when the Statute of Secrecy went into effect. You have to remember that they could have evolved just as the Muggle nations did but in different directions e.g. so we have a Central American Ministry instead of a bunch of different countries.

It's still something Grindelwald could possibly manipulate, just someone close to Hitler instead of the man himself.

True, which is why I said "roughly based". I'd expect some nations to change during 400 years. Plus of course, there's the option that some areas, like Transylvania, are not nations but regions of bigger countries.

Imagine now with what kind of crap aurors from Commonwealth Auror Corps have to deal with when they get sent to the sub-department tasked with keeping tab on everything going in and around German Nazi Concentration and Extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau? You cannot leave unattended a massive grave of over six million people laying around and hope no dark wizard stumbles upon it.

It gives opportunity to change the usual portrayal of Japan as magical power house. During the fire bombing of Tokyo, Japanese Ministry of Magic decided to concentrate and move all of its citizens and all of its assets further west to more calm and secure locations. They choose Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively. And American wizards used it - they had a long trade disputes with their Japanese counterparts - they manipulated muggles into choosing Hiroshima and Nagasaki as targets for nuclear bombardment. In one quick explosion 95% of Japanese wizards were no more. The next bomb took care of crippled Japanese Ministry.

After the war and the fall of Grindelwald ICW investigation could not find any kind of evidence of manipulation of muggles from the magical side. The Japanese Remnants still to this day claim it was a war crime and demand further investigations. The Americans are considered to be on the border of a rouge state by ICW. ICW fears that the American wizards could use the substantial military power of muggle USA to enforce their own interests.

"What do you mean she should learn Polish? Why does she have to go to Kraków? What? There's a school there? Wait a minute - what's the full name of that Commonwealth you mentioned? Rzeczpospolita Obojga Narodów? I need vodka."

Actually they were not all that close either. Unlike some of the other Nazi leaders, Hitler and Himmler shared no personal friendship. They ran in completley different social circles and their relationship purely professional.

If you're doing Bond!Harry, then shouldn't you also have an M, a 'Mother', and secret 00 status for agents? Immunity to prosecution for use of the Unforgiveables. Requirement to successfully use an AK at least twice in the course of fulfilling a mission before "graduation", a Bond-Broom.

So, for your SMERSH/SPECTRE/Quantum...why not throw in a gaggle of them? All with conflicting goals.

Knights of Walpurgis (KW, or KWALP)- They still exist as an underground cult, and they are out to restore an ancient line of King-Mages to rule. Or at least, that's what they think they are doing. Only the inner-circle know they are trying to put a demonic entity of dark magic into rule.

Society of Mages and Enchanters for the Restoration of the Sacred Hallows (SMERSH)- A mystic cult of worshipers of the Deathly Hallows who will stop at nothing to have them reunited and usher in an age ruled by the Master of Death. Canon members: Xenophilius Lovegood, Luna Lovegood, Sybil Trelawney

Supreme Power Executive Council of the Ten Reporters Extraordinaire (SPECTRE)- Secret board of directors of the major wizarding newspapers intent on controlling the information available to the wizarding world, and thus controlling all magicals' minds. Canon members: Rita Skeeter, Dennis Creevey, Gilderoy Lockhart

Quartet of Natural Transfiguration Uber Mages
(QuaNTUM)- Four mages exceptionally gifted at Transfiguration. They can transform into anything they want. Their goal: Having whatever they want. Canon Members: None, but any person or object in canon might have been one of the QuaNTUM mages in disguise!

The (New) Marauders- An order of wizards determined to take pranking to record heights...and lows. Canon Members: Zonko, George Weasley, any children of any canon characters

Society for the Promotion of Elf Welfare (SPEW)- As canon. But now they're not playing. Canon Members: Winky, Hermione Granger, Harry Potter (inactive)
Society for the Promotion of Elf World Domination (SPEWD)- A more sinister version of SPEW. Canon Members: None

    MI11- Ministry of Magic's 00 branch.

When people see Bond!Harry, it's less of a promise and more of a guideline. Without revealing the future plot for this story, we based some ideas off of things from the Bond world. But it's not a crossover, and it's certainly not James Bond in Harry Potter form. No 00 ratings. No license to kill.

So don't think of it as a word for word reiteration of the misadventures of James Bond as written by Lungs with CrackedMind chirping in his ear.

Figured that, as you didn't say Bond/Harry X-Over. I was just giving suggestions.

Already looked at the WBA and like what's been done so far.

As a thought, what about all the good things Dumbledore was maintaining with his continuing life? I'm sure relations with several races of magical creatures would deteriorate from the lack of not only the potent power he represented, but the lack of his wisdom and patience in dealing with them.

Hell, I could see vampires, apparently a sort of tolerated/barely persecuted group in canon (I can never remember if it's made clear, but I don't think so) rising up against being second class citizens for the crime of being killed by the wrong kind of thing. Werewolf communities, especially the more passive "normal" ones, might start pushing for fairer legislation. I'm sure the giants would pitch a fit about their treatment, seeing as they worked with the Death Eaters. Merpeople and centaurs, at least on Hogwarts grounds, might want to renegotiate the terms of their stay in the lake/forest.

Uhhh...I imagine there are several very important enchantments or spells that Dumbledore set up on his own, or perhaps some not-so-important ones, that will either fail at the point of his death, or run out of power shortly afterwards. Faith in Hogwarts as an educational institution might drop without his presence, leading to a slow decline in quality or enrollment. Other nations might find that barely functional working relationships are now unbearable without his moderation.

Let's see...Non-national magical traditions might be on the rise, given that the great example of mainstream wizardry died. Aboriginal Australians, Native Americans, hell, Visigoths and Gauls for that matter. People might lose faith in canon magic and seek out something older, or perhaps newer, to keep themselves safe from the big bad world.

The American Ministry offers to send "aid" to the Brits in their time of need, and end up trying to make some kind of overt or covert power play. Fuck, maybe the Canadian Ministry has been more than symbolically subservient to the Queen, unlike muggle Canada, and decides now is a great time to flip them the bird and declare magical independence. There are so many different ways to take this, given that the world-wide situation was never elaborated upon.

Damn. These two paragraphs alone gave me a hundred of ideas. Probably not going to use anything very soon, but could I? Can I?

If it wasn't skirting the First Potter Law this much, I'd probably start even sooner.

Well, the basic idea that a map of things under the masquerade is different than the overlaying map is already awesome enough, even without a Harry Potter context. The potential!

Also, I don't see how Moskow would be a part of the commonwealth. It didn't really reach that far. But it was funny anyway.

p.s. Heh, now I'm imagining some random Muggleborn Americans realizing that they still live in the Brittish Empire.

@first question & Potter Law - I don't see any kind of problem with that. Also, remeber Law LXI of the Potter Law.

@Moscow - At the hight of its glory the borders of Rzeczpospolita were only less than 400 kilometers from Moscow - it's a small distance. Also, Moscow is a neutral city in a see of never-ending war between all the different polities that make up the Magical Russian Federation. After the fall of Grindelwald, during the peace conference, ICW decided that an international peacekeeping force would be deployed to Moscow to guarantee its neutrality, as the city is too important to leave it to one party. It was also decided that the magical children born/raised in Moscow would go to one of the schools in neighboring countries. This move was fully supported by the Commonwealth, the Chinese wizards and Sweden, as those countries would benefit the most from the infighting in Russia. And guess who provides the main bulk of the force for this peacekeeping force?

Yes, I would be extremely happy to see story based on this. I have multiple ideas and no abilities to produce story. And anyway ideas are outside of patents/copyrights/etc.

Fun fact: Poland occupied Moscow for a short time: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish%E2%80%93Muscovite_War_%281605%E2%80%9318%29#Poles_in_Moscow_.281610.29 ("The Moscow Kremlin was then garrisoned by Polish troops commanded by Aleksander Gosiewski. On 27 July a treaty was signed between the boyars and Żółkiewski promising the Russian boyars the same vast privileges the Polish szlachta had, in exchange for them recognizing Władysław as the new tsar.")
