. . . Then, as bad as HBP and DH were, shouldn't be surprised if reading this "book 8" is like getting a foot up the ass sideways.

    2.5 year necro-bump!

Anyway, I came across this series the other day and pretty much bombed my way through the three books he's published (available in pdf here: http://www.jamespotterseries.com/muggle_index.html). Obviously JKR has nothing to do with them and they weren't "Book 8." With that in mind, aside from a couple of things that grated
James does inexplicably stupid things at times in order to advance the plot.

Scorpius Malfoy is *wildly* overpowered for a first year.
These stories are actually quite good, and there's been some serious effort put into the production value.

While this series may not be 100% DLP-compliant, on the whole these are quite good for fanfiction and easily worthy of a read.

I can only see the link for the third book, not the first two.

Start at the bottom left under the "m" in James (The graphic of the snitch should take you to the first book).

    *ahem*

I read all that stuff too, but there's other stuff in there as well. Honest, it's really not bad.

Hmm, I'm sceptical, but I might give it a go at some point.

Professional fanfiction? Like that Firefly fanfic mentioned on here two years or so ago which name escapes me and I never got around to reading? Might give it a go if I've got nothing else to read.

    This... I don't even.

There's nothing good about the writing and a more unimaginative set of bland characters you couldn't write if you tried. I read some mention of printed copies being available. If this is true, why the fuck hasn't JKR sued the shit out of him yet?

That's entirely irrelevant. It doesn't mitigate that he stole intellectual property from her.

I like how much effort this guy went to for his website :l
But yeah, if he's earning any money JKR should be suing him into oblivion.

Lippert has written quite a few, actually: Petra's Getaway, Harry's First Christmas, Merlin's Gift and James Potter and the Hall of Elders' Crossing. I haven't looked at any of them. They sound like the next-generation fics that take the wizarding world and some convenient names, and make their own story, whoopee.

I haven't read this yet but I really find it impressive that he put so much effort into his site and the format of his story. I might check it out in the next few weeks.

And yeah, he definitely doesn't make any money from this.

No more so than every other fan fiction author. He talked to her lawyers (since he made such a spectacle of himself that he actually attracted their attention), and apparently was given tacit permission to continue, as long as he's not making any money off of it.

As for the books themselves, they are not bad if you like Next Generation stories. If you don't, then there's nothing so fantastic about them that they will change your mind. The flaws Nukular Winter pointed out, as well as some other handwaving of plot holes, annoyed me at times, but Lippert is a solid if unexceptional writer.

So apparently there was a fan film made for the first book. YouTube link

    It's...pretty bad.

As to the books themselves, I read a bit, and while what little I read was technically okay, nothing really enticed me to read more. Next-gen fics just aren't my thing, I suppose.

The writing isn't bad, but the story is very predictable. And I can't really say that the writing is much better than Rowling's, which is a little sad. Ah well! Appreciate the effort, right?

I'd say, 'pretty shit' would have been a better phrase, here.

Is the fan film watchable for someone who hasn't read this guy's fanfiction?

The question should be: Is this even watchable, period?
