So I've been reading a lot of forgotten realms lately and I've even played some pen and paper games with it and the god system is very interesting. I've been re-reading Erevis Cale which has a lot of focale on the interplay between mortals and gods.

Back to main point of the thread though, I was curious if anybody has seen a story that has a similar divine element but set in a more modern or maybe futuristic background.

The closest thing I personally can think of is American Gods but I didn't know if anybody else had an idea that hit closer to the mark.

I haven't read any of the Forgotten Realms novels, so I can't really say how close this is to what you're looking for, but Contantine (based on the Hellblazer comic books) is probably my favorite modern story with this mortals and gods theme.

Sadly I haven't been able to find any novels which approached this theme in the same manner, i.e. godlike entities interfering with our modern day world.

But seriously, check out the Chronicles of Chaos by John C. Wright. Its not gods and mortals, per say.... More:

Gods vs Gods, and how one pantheon might stay in charge over another.

    Still, its a fantastic series.
