I don't know if this is happening in your neck of the woods, but this is pissing me off.

The Dark Materials book series happens to be one of my favorite, and when I heard movies were being made based on this I was thrilled.

Then I get word that moms and dads all over town are organizing a boycott for the movie because of its theme.

Makes me want to kill something!:chainsaw:

Oh, The Golden Compass is based on that series? Never knew that. :p

What's the theme? Never actually read the books.

It's an Anti-Narnia series. Philip Pullman has ridiculous hate for Narnia, and he wrote the entire series in that hatred.

    It fucking rocks.

It's very ant-Catholic, and by the end of the third book, it becomes anti-spirituality, and the main characters basically kill God after deeming him unnecessary and usually evil.

I can't wait to see people fighting on polar bears :D

    ROFL!

Holy shit, now I have to read the series. That sounds fucking epic. I mean, I read Narnia when I was a little kid, so it has fond memories for me, since I didn't see the obvious Christian theme in it, but still. I have to read it if it's Anti-Christian.

But yeah, the whole boycotting thing? That's what made me decide to go watch the Da Vinci Code. Not because I was interested, but because so many freaks like that were carrying signs outside of movie theaters. So now I'll definitely go for this. I'll have to read the books before though. They long? Or average length?

Pretty average. The second book is really short, I started re-reading it last night and I'm about 20 pages 'til the end.

    I loved this series.

I was pretty young when I read the books, so some of the deeper stuff probably went over my head, but I did get the impression that God was evil and had to die.

I suspect it might be why I'm atheist now.

I'm definately going to go see it one of these days. :p

It seems stupid to me. I don't remember non-Catholics boycotting Chronicles because of its Christian themes, so in my opinion christian and catholics should have the same respect. If you don't want you kid watching fine, don't give him money and don't let him go, but to go through this charade of boycotting and denying other people the chance to see it is bullshit.
Don't these people have work to do.
    I can see it now
"Oh hey Fred you missed work again, you know if you miss again you can get fired"
"Sorry Dave I'm swamped with outside work trying to ban a children's film from getting shown. I have priorities."
Twats. Just for that I'm gonna watch this movie twice to make up for the asshole that didn't watch it.

I find this all really funny really. I saw on Fox news(no I do not watch, but my boss loves it) some woman who was talking how the movie itself was very tame on the Catholic hate, they were afraid seeing the movie would make kids read the books and begin to channel the Hate.

But yeah the books kick ass. Polar bears are the best. No more needs to be said.

Yeah, the Christians around me are pissed off about it as well.

But I still think that the winner of the "Fuck Fundies" sweepstakes has to be Naguib Mahfouz for his book Children of Gebelawi.

Personally, I think that if the Catholic League just shut up about this shit, the film would gross less money. But Bill Donohue has never been the brightest bulb in the box.

The funny thing is I'm betting that they cut the most controversial parts. This movie will most likey just be portrayed as an average children's fantasy movie. If they do include it, it will be as subtle as it is in the books. The books themselves don't say "Hey kids, God is EVIL. Go bash religion, and become atheists.", so I'm betting the movie won't either. The boycotting will likely get more people to see the film too, so it's accomplishing the opposite of its intent.

So they toned down the anti-religious themes to appease the same mum and dad fuckwits who are now boycotting the movie anyway.

Should have just kept it as it was.

Ah, I remember these. My Journalism teacher loves the series.

I'm actually reading the first book since he made it 'Mandatory' reading material for our class.

    It's quite good...

 ...and the movie should be filled with killer polar bears or some such...

The first book really doesn't give you much clue that they will end up kill god though. The Catholic church is as bad, if not worse, as it was during the crusades and thats about it. Its only towards the end of the first and throughout the second that you finally understand whats going on. Like i said I don't know if this is happening where you are, but I'm pissed off about it.

As to how I justify being a Christian and enjoy these books? Simple, I love good literature and am not so insecure about my beliefs that I can't take criticism from other sources.

I think I read the books when I was a bit too young, I didn't really comprehend the themes at the time. I'm considering rereading them just to see how much being 10-12 years older would change my opinion. But back in the day... I loved that polar bear and the fact he mauled everyone. Although the subtle knife was overpowered.

Better watch it a dozen times or more then, cause that's how many E-mail I got asking me to boycott it. never read the books, don't particularly care about the movie. But you know what, Though I didn't really give a damn before, I think I'll avoid it now just cause apparently everyone here plans on seeing it. There needs to be balance right? or perhaps I'm just doing it cause I feel like being an ornery cuss right now. Either way, Meh...

    Okay, just saw it.

Uhm. I haven't read the books and only saw it because i few of my friends had read the books.

Okay, Soul outside of yourself? Yeah I can see the blasphemy of that.

cosmic forces and multiple universes and magic dust? Yep

Uhm. It was a fun movie, Fantastic casting,
Ian Mckellen as a polar bear wins.
Daniel Craig and Eva Green being in another movie together? Also a win.

ending was less than desired, but I take movies based on books with a grain of salt, of course it isn't going to be like the book, mainly for cineamatics.
