Well. I saw the movie yesterday and have to say that it was just a tad bit disappointing. Although it has been about 8 years since I've read the books, it seems to me that they've changed quite a bit. But it only the first book after all. I'm sure the next two movie will be a bit more epic.
Still I can only recommend it to anyone who likes that kind of stuff or the books.

Are there any HP/Dark Matter crossovers around yet? I'm sure there will be plenty in the future but those made before the movies will probably be better.

Where did the ending leave off on this? I heard they cut out three of the ending chapters (to be saved for the beginning of the second movie) to make it better for the film version.

I cant wait for Angels and Demons to come out. The Da Vinci Code pissed people off. Wait till for the prequel that is set inside the Vatican. Its the same bullshit that people had over our dearly beloved Harry Potter. Church groups hated it. blah blah blah. ITS A BOOK.

So they're pissed off a fictional book is bashing a religion built up around a fictional book they've deluded themselves into thinking is reality?

I mean I know the last time I said fuck god personally, I was struck death dumb and blind. Happens all the time. Just the other day, why I even watched a porno film with Jesus the gardener, and there was even a whole scene about his second coming.

You know I really wonder if LOTR series had come out thousands of years ago, if there would be dumbfucks worshiping elves right now, b/c the damned LOTR series is more detailed, more consistent, and more believable then 90% of the crap in the good book.

I was rather disappointed by the movie. I brought people with me who hadn't read the book before and had to apologize, as they couldn't understand anything that was going on.

It jumped to a new scene every two minutes in the beginning. It was just annoying.

Pullman's books are awesome. I never really picked up on the "anti-christian" themes when I read them long ago; the plot was awesome, and that was that.

Even though Metacritic is giving it a 51, polar-bear fighting has sold me. I'm going to go watch it, even though I fully expect it to suck because of the usual gap in converting books to films.

I wouldn't boycott the movie because of all the anti-religion shit, I'd boycott the movie because it's 'effing retarded.

The movie is quite a bit of a let down, and they change the scene order and the ending but it was enough to make me read the books again.

    Verdict

    Film - Meh

Books - More Awesome than anything, including the authority

Movies based on books are always full of fail, With LotR being an exception.

Case in point HP and The Power Of One. The movie of The Power Of One was the biggest let down for me as I completely love the book.

On the religion note: How many Atheists do you have knocking on your door trying to convince you of their ideals. Hell Atheism doesn't fucking cause wars, leech off society by claiming to be a non-profit organisation, flex influence over political and social issues.

They don't piss me the fuck off like other religions do, thus why I'm an Atheist.

Pro Tip: Set your dog on the dolts who come to save you on your door step.

I prefer telling them that I'm a Satanist and that the true way to enlightenment is through 'sinning' as much as possible :D.

On topic though, I don't understand why people actually do this shit. You may have a problem with the film, but its your problem, not ours. It annoys the fuck out of me when I see people protesting worthless causes. It's pointless and a waste of time, go find a hobby :p.

LOL I just realized I'm probably the only guy that goes to church even semi-regularly in this whole forum.

I don't understand the boycott at all, It's just a fucking movie not the anti-christ! Whats there to fear? Freedom of thought?

P.S. It's been a while but I remember liking the books as well, just cause the author hates everything I stand for(lol) doesn't mean shit man.

I just finished re-reading the trilogy and found some elements that remind me of the HP universe.

    1) Professor Trelawney- skinny, disliked scholar (pretty self-explanatory)

    2) Spectors- Dementor-like creatures that suck out people's souls

    3) Idea of daemons as being your inner animal (sort of like animagi)

    4) There's the fact that Lyra, the "hero" so to speak of the series, has to be kept ignorant about her role in the war in order to fulfill a prophecy

    5) Idea of sacrifice: Roger/Cedric parallel

Anyways, there's a bunch of little things (I can't really find all of them now). I wouldn't be surprised if some of Rowling's work was influenced by Pullman.

I read this thread primarily out of interest in how DLP members would react. I won sever al bets with my self.

I purchased one of the books long ago. The money was not well spent, the book simply did not catch my interest, it's been so long I cannot say why. I tried opening it again when the movie came out. I expected to find the book interesting based on the controversy. --Bleah--

Allow me one outsider observation. The venom expressed by many on this forum is no different in tenor than those who advocate boycotts and book burnings. The best which can be said is that, at least, both parties are willing to act on their beliefs. Which is infinitely better that those sad souls who are neither for nor against apathy.
