I'm writing a story set in the 1930 - 1940's, so I've been looking all over for books that give a detailed description of what life was like back then.

Could anyone give me any recommendations?

The Thirties: An Intimate History of Britain, by Juliet Gardiner

Never read it, but it looks like a fairly thorough overview of that time.

For a book about the 40s... well, I imagine there is a vast amount of literature covering every aspect of life in Britain during the war. It can't be hard to find information about that.

Thank you, I'll probably buy it. Research is serious business.

And also the best part of writing.

Well, it depends what exactly you want, I suppose. For the idyllic variant of it, you don't need to look any further than Enid Blyton, for example. Especially if you can get your hands on the un-censored versions (they honestly changed 'gypsies' to 'travelling people' for PC :?), stuff like the Mystery Of ... series gives a surprisingly decent impression of what life (in villages or small towns) as part of the upper middle-class was like. The behaviour, the moral values, the life-style, it's all there.

Of course, if you're looking for stuff about the war or e.g. how black people lived, this is no good ;)

Sounds great. I will have to look around for them, specifically the uncensored stuff. Coz I'm a rebel.

If you tire of books and want a visual description, from what I've seen of the show, Foyle's War (according to what I know of the time period) is an incredibly accurate portrayal of what everyday life in rural Britain was like during and after the war.

Critics and other viewers seem to agree with me.

Travelling people comes from Travelers obviously and they have a different ethnical background than gipsies in mainland europe. Therefore this might not be a blatant case of PC than being more specific.

P.S. Was a great Enid Blyton fan in my youth too, at least in the case of the Adventure and 5 friend series:)

Can't recommend this enough. Amazing story-telling, fantastic attention to detail and an incredible portrayal of some of the social issues facing people during this time period. Plus Michael Kitchen plays one of the most badass detectives of all time.

It's not about the 30s explicitly, but if you want a brief and witty overview of the period of British history which helped form the attitudes of the 30s (and indeed, the present day British), I recommend Jeremy Paxman's Empire: What Ruling the World Did to the British.
