    Re: Ehh? Win95 you say??

How computer literate are you? And are you on dialup or using IE? Because depending on your configuration there's a whole lot you can do even with Win98... That said I'd recommend trying to get Win98SE over the original edition of Win98.

That's of course assuming you care? If its just a litle while until you buy a new machine... [shrugs] ..and you may already be quite happy with your current setup.

    --bornagainpenguin

PS: I'm not trying to push penguin-love on you but have you considered trying to see if perhaps Linux or one of the *BSDs might meet your needs better than staying with Win98? What about BeOS (assuming it will run on your hardware?) or one of the other alternative OSes meant for low end machines? I'm assuming that you're on a lower-powered machine at the moment and aren't happy about it based on the tone of yout post.

Meh, I'm all right in terms of computers, but only when it comes to using them. Hardware problems are way past me. I'm fine with this computer for the time being, I just can't put new songs on my ipod, that's the main thing that's bugging me. It's slow as hell too, like 600 mhz. I reallywant to get to college.

So its mostly a money issue then? As in 'I'm trying to save all my free cash to get to college; I'll worry about Windows once I get there' is that it? Then in that case I'd recommend you check out Ubuntu Linux at this address:

They'll mail you a free (as in zero dollars cost to you, not even the shipping and handling scam) set of cds. One is a 'live' cd that you boot from and it'll tell you if your hardware is supported, the other one is used for installation. I'd recommend this only if you have DSL or some form of broadband tho' as I'd imagine it'd be a pain keeping the system up to date on dial up!

Another option if you know how to deal with activation is to check out your local computer stores to see if you can snag the OEM edition of Windows Media Center Edition. I'd do this myself if I didn't already own both the FCKGW Edition and the Home Edition of WinXP, as my Home Edition is the 'upgrade' edition and I was foolish enough to buy it the day of release... I picked up the Corporate Edition so as to not have to phone home everytime I gave Linux a spin and went back to Windows...

Point is, you can get the OEM Windows Media Center Edition 2005 (which is more or less Windows XP Pro with a nice shell for media playing) for under $100.00 easily if you know where to look-- and its a legal copy! I'd go for one myself if I thought it'd be worth it. The only thing is if you bump back up to 2K\XP you'll need to turn off some services and do some general tweaking to tune it.

PS: What hasppened to your hardcopy of XP install media?

Not sure, is it a plug in, extension, or a adsite you blocked?

Also if you notice, my file knocks out goddamned FF.net ads as well, lol.

Whitelisting is apparently a list of things you don't want to block... :O_O: I know--WTF was my reaction too! Block all the ads I say!!

Hello, this is the KHTML Team, wanting you to know they'd like their browser back... do a little research please. Apple may have done some wonderful things with the code they turned into Safari but please don't forget that it was this same code that was the mjaority written by various open source and GPL coders...

I used to love Opera back in their 5.xx days but since they've made clear their firm intention to disallow adblocking and their active blocking of the one open-source (free software) developer who was working on it and their insistance on adding useless features to the browser has made them lose the shine they once had.

Its quite simple for me really, now that I've been able to surf ad free for the last year and a half there's no way I'll willingly go back to it.
