So I came across this the other day and binged it over the weekend. Its awesome.

The basic setting is a fantasy take on Irish immigrants coming to London during the famine and all the fun prejudice and tensions that brought. Except the immigrants are fantasy races, mainly fairies and satyrs, fleeing a devastating war in their homeland after the the British empire stand in 'The Burge' pulls out of a loosing proxy war with the not-Russians 'The Pact.'

    Synopsis
A human detective and a fairy rekindle a dangerous affair in a Victorian fantasy world, where the city's uneasy peace collapses when a string of murders reveals an unimaginable monster.

This is main thread. With parallel plots which amount to basically interspecies regency drama and GoT esque political drama carrying on alongside with charecters with tangential connections. Some parts of it works better than others, there are improvements to be made, but it does culminate in a world that feels really realised.

Cara Delevingne is surprisingly good with a reasonably consistent attempt at a Dublinesque accent. She and Orlando Bloom have reasonable chemistry, though it took me till their flashback episode to buy into the couple. They've already confirmed season 2 so I'm happy.

    But yeah go watch it.

My only gripes are that they did not do a good job setting up the main villain for foreseeable future. We're expected to believe that Sophie Longerbane is this master schemer causing the downfall of powerful people, but she isn't introduced until like halfway through the season, and she just plops down in the middle of the plot as this unexpected force to be reckoned with. She should've been shown to us from episode 1 and then they could've had the surprise twist that she's a Machiavelli with tits. My other gripe is that the reveals are pretty obvious. I figured out Philo's father as soon as they said his father would have a son destined for great things, and that Philo is a halfbreed was pretty clear before the reveal (tho I don't think it was meant to be a shock considering how early it's revealed.

All in all I really enjoyed the show. I think that the world it's set in has great potential and I hope next season expands on it.

I tried it. I gave it a chance.

    I really, really hated it.

It was okay. Not spectacular. First thing Cara whatsherface has been in that I've been able to tolerate.

    Major problems:

Really needs to explore Tir na noc and the fantasy side of things.

The snobby-sister/goat-dude plotline was objectively pointless (other than being a lengthy excuse to worldbuild). Neither of them ended up tying into the main plot in any way.

The big bad was phenomenally underwhelming. I know it was supposed to be a "whatatwist!" moment, but with all of the Irish mythos to play with, I really can't believe they went with that. Bah.

I tried when I saw the show pop up a few weeks back. I can't even speak to it that much. I kind of just got annoyed with Cara Delevingne and gave up...

I accidentally watched the last episode first. It was a really strong, bold introduction into the world. Exciting plot threads were introduced, mysteries were hunted at unfolding, and the presence of established backstory made it feel weighty and significant.

Then I realised that this wasn t episode one and all my impressions were wrong. Hah.

Still loved the show. Philo and Absalom were great. Agreas even more so, although his sideplot seemed wholly irrelevant to the main plot other than for worldbuilding.

I feel like there's a hinting at a wider plot which hasn't been seen yet. I'm excited to see what comes of that in season 2.

Wholly ambivalent. World looks nice, actors put in their marks, but writing and drama are considerably shallow.
