I'm talking about Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Gulliver's Travels and many other classic tales.

I've actually never read fics based on such classics. I want to do so now.

I did a flash fiction based on Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Notes from Underground. Link.

Well, Gregory Maguire has his reimaginings of fairy tales and the like, my favorite of which is about the Wicked Witch of the West: Wicked. I have enjoyed all of his books, though.

There are also the many many movies and TV shows based on the world of Oz, as well as the worlds of Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland, that are so far from the source text that they might as well be fanfiction.

They aren't text, though, of course, but certainly worth watching.

If it's no longer copyrighted it hasn't even got to be fanfiction. You can retell, alter, etc. and have it be legitimate storytelling.

For example, here's a sampling of Alice in Wonderland retellings:
    Queen of Hearts
    Death of the Mad Hatter
    Gears of Wonderland
    Video Game Artbook interpretation

Disclaimer* I haven't actually read any of those. But the point stands -- you don't need to look for fanfic for most classics. Most of them are public domain and you can find variations on Amazon or Goodreads.

To be honest, I have always wondered how would some of them cross over.

For example, imagine Pinocchio travelling through the land of Oz, wanting to ask the Great Wizard to make him a real boy. The themes merge well, given that in the story we already have people wanting to ask the great wizard for help.

Or how about Don Quixote somehow falls into Wonderland? The man is delusional already, what does he make of a land that was (maybe) created from delusions?

This is true only of work published before 1922. U.S. copyright law protects works for 95 years after date of publication (for works up until 1978 ) or 70 years past the death of the author (work after 1978 ). For anything more recent, you'd probably have to go to fanfiction to find it.

Probably, Harry is in there too. But I know he wishes he wasn't.

Read the Fables comic series. It won't disappoint.

I was looking through the forum for something new to read, and I remembered this thread. I thought I'd bump it and see if anyone has any new suggestions!

Dracula, Frankenstein and other Universal monsters are considered classics by now. So while this isn't a story, I strongly recommend everyone to read this, because it is highly interesting and very well made.

    Here's the premise:

Imagine a world where the classic monsters exist: Vampires, Ghouls, Werewolves, Mummies, New Men (Frankenstein's legacy), Witches and Lovecraftian Horrors.

And then the Zombie Apocalypse happens and ruins everyone's fun.

After all, who will provide fresh blood for vampires if the humans are zombies?

The answer to that question and many others is in QuantumBranching's "A World of Darkness Indeed" scenario on devianta******.

It is a very interesting setting that I'd like to read some stories set in.

Any talented DLP writers willing to try their hand at it?
