I was rereading one of the older fics I've read today and I noticed that I don't think I've ever read a manipulative Dumbledore story where he actually manages to stay competent after all his lies and machinations are revealed. Does anyone know a story where he is still sort of competent afterwards? He doesn't have to win or get his way or anything, just where he does more than allow himself to be crushed by (usually) Harry and whatever girl the author has paired him with.

If anyone does know of a story like this, please no slash or Harry/Ginny.

Oh, and to be clear, I'd like it if Dumbledore did not mutter the line "It's for the greater good," more than... 4 times in the fic at most. Seeing him always use that excuse even after he's clearly failed gets boring and stupid.

Ah no wait. Sorry I don't want just a competent Dumbledore. I want to know if there are any fics where he iscompetent and manipulative. Hard to find, I know. Just wondered if there were any. He can be evil in it, he can be doing his greater good angle, whatever, I just want to see one where Harry actually has a challenge trying to escape from Dumbledore's control or whatever. That thread just has him being competent.

 

There's a septology out there with a great Dumbledore in it, manipulative and extremely competent. Almost omniscient, and definitely prescient, though you don't find out just how much until right at the end of the seventh fic in the arc.

It's The Harry Potter series by some Brit named JK Rowling. There are some WTF twists and more than a couple plot holes, etc. but whaddaya expect from such a long series? Plus, it's complete!

 

The Sacrifices Arc definitely has Harry struggling to escape Dumbledore's control. Not for the reasons you'd expect, maybe, but still.

There are some stories with manipulative but good Dumbledore (in fact, well written Dumbledore must be manipulative). Examples: Denarian Series, Catharsis.

If you want well written, manipulative and evil, I have nothing to offer to you. It definitely seems to be possible, though.

 

Partially Kissed Hero has the best Manipulative, Evil Dumbledore. Even better than the one in Sacrifices. He's such a badass.

@KrzaQ Yeah, I figured that there wouldnt be many Evil!Dumbledore fics out there that were written decently.

I remember reading the beginning of one where Molly resurrects Dumbledore after Voldemort is defeated and then has sex with him for some weird, bizarre reason. That one was pretty fucked up though and the author had terrible grammar. But it made me wonder if people had tried the whole "Dumbledore is secretly the real dark lord!" angle and not messed it up.

There's a story titled "Flames of Betrayal" where Albus is evil and manipulative. Though I forget if he's competent in that story or not.
